Folks, you've helped me tremendously, thanks for your prompt responses. I have one last question regarding GNOME themes and I won't ask here for a while.
I looked on GNOME-Look.org and I'd like to install some of those themes but I'm a little confused. I don't know if I should install GTK 1.x or GTK 2.x. What's the default theme format that I can install on Ubuntu (dapper)? And what's GDM?
Now I'm just screwing around... But I'm amazed how many things I can do on Ubuntu that I used to depend on Windows for.
Thanks all.

Use GTK2.x themes. GDM themes are for the login screen.
-
GTK2 themes are basically all the "controls," menus, progress bars, etc. the window borders are called "Metacity" themes.

I was wondering what "Metacity" was... thank you.

do you know how to install the themes?
