excuse me. i am running ubuntu. is there anyway i can put a password on a folder or a document?

personally, I would use encfs

encfs is a good way to go.
If you are just archiving, you can use tar up the directory and then encrypt it with gpg.
You can also use TrueCrypt. I've never used it myself, but I hear good thing about it. -
I use Truecrypt and I like it a lot. It's great for financial records and password lists and such. It's also cross-platform, so you can put a tc container file on a flashdrive and open it on any windows computer (though I think you may need admin privs to run truecrypt on the windows machine).
