while running ubuntu 8.10 today, i came across an unexpected problem with pidgin and aim. pidgin works fine when i set it to log into my gmail account, but once i tell it to sign into my aim account, it automatically quits pidgin
i've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling pidgin, but this did not change a thing. when i tried most recently earlier today, the buddy list doesn't even show up when i try to start pidgin, and it opens for a fraction of a second and my notification area moves a little before returning to its original size.
any ideas on what could possibly be going on? it's never happened to me but just started today.

Sounds like a showstopper bug. Was there a recent update, or anything else that may have affected your Pidgin installation? We should also entertain the possibility that the problem is due to a change in the AIM protocol that Pidgin has not yet caught up to. All speculation of course...

Try launching pidgin from within a console, to get its output. It may give you some clues.

i have tried running it in console, but error output occurred.
a strange thing as well, i signed on after i got home, and pidgin was working fine once again....i'm not sure what exactly happened. -

Did it say anything specific? -
Just copy and paste the whole error output from the terminal and we'll browse through it for you.

my bad, i mis-typed it. i meant to say that no output error showed up in terminal.
as of right now it works again, but i'm not sure how. if it happens again i'll be sure to post the error output (if there is one) that terminal gives me. -
It was a confusing array of self-solving problems that drove me away from ubuntu.
I try too hard, that's why... -

it worked fine for about a week, and it just happened again today.
when i ran it in terminal it showed up for a few seconds before closing. the following is the error that terminal stated:
Segmentation fault
any suggestions?
pidgin automatically closing
