I'm glad some of you like Unity. One of the things that struck me after posting the user notes is how easy and INTUITIVE it is to find your way around the OS. I tried Kubuntu 11.04 but Unity sets itself apart from the rest.

After trying Unity ( 2d beta QT on my netbook) I can't see how people find the interface intuitive at all. It really is a step back from all environments, with the exception of Gnome3.
Maybe I have been using Crunchbang! on my desktop for too long. -
I too am not a fan. Painful for me to use.
-
Alright. I've now tested 11.04 for about 6 hours on my workstation.
Verdict: it's getting wiped the hell off my disk right now.
Here's the thing: Unity is buggy. It's inconsistent. To top it all off, it takes more resources to do less than its predecessors.
Maybe some day it will get up to the level of its competition and its predecessors... but that day certainly isn't now. I stand by my past assessment of it: in terms of UX and polish it absolutely is NOT release-ready. -
Atleast it is no Gnome3. That is by far the worst DE I have ever used/tried. -
Looks like I'll be sticking with 10.04.2 for awhile then.
-
I switched to KDE =)
I agree that dumbing down the interface is not the way to go especially for old time Linux Users.
You could argue for the use of Terminal but all Linux has terminal. -
Running it now. Blindingly fast compared to not only to Windows 7 but also earlier versions of Ubuntu, all using wubi (windows file system). I have had a few stalls, but not for a day or so, and am very impressed so far. I am going to trial it for a few more days and then maybe replace by a conventional install...

I'm running 2 Natty installs, have been for months.
I quite like Unity, it's a bit more modern, I think
I like gnome-shell even more though. A bit more polished imho. -
My other PC is a Mac... and Unity actually more feels OSX like. It feels like it is a bit slower, and compared to 10.10 that used less 300MB of RAM and did not use the swap file, this new desktop brings it up to 400MB and it uses the swap file. But it is not crawling or anything even on four year old hardware. I guess I will be keeping it.
If I do not like it, I can always go back to the old Gnone desktop. This can be change at System ---> Login Screen Settings. -
Maybe I missed something along the way, but isn't Unity that awful "netbook" interface? That was horrible and painful to use
-
-
I tried the Netbook interface on 10.10. This is an improvement over the netbook version. I do not see what the problem is since, the old interface is still available to those who want it.
-
I installed 11.04 on a spare old laptop just to try it out... I have to say I can see the direction it is going. The interface will need some work to get used to but I can see it happening... It has the potential.
That being said... I don't think it is quite polished this time around... There are definitely things that need to be worked on this release.
I for one will be waiting for 11.10 and hope for the best then! -
