mayb im doing something wrong, but my comp never has a screen saver. when im on my laptop, ill just shut my lid, and it will bring up the password entry, but thats not a screensaver, or anything to stop from the pixels being stuck. is there anyway to force a screen saver? in windows i just hit the windows key, and L, and it will do a switch user, which will eventually put a screen saver on

The pixels don't get stuck on an LCD the same way they do on a CRT. And if you close the lid of your laptop, it turns off the monitor, so it doesn't matter anyway.

Otherwise, you need to configure xscreensaver, or there may be something specific for your distribution. What distro of Linux are you running?

yeah, you may not have xscreensaver installed. Installation will depend on the distribution you're using.

If it's installed, you should be able to run `xscreensaver-demo` This will bring up a GUI to allow you to choose you saver, some other configs (like when to shut off the montitor automatically), and start/restart the daemon controlling the screensaver.

It should be installed by default. Check the gnome configuration panel or wherever it is to set up the screen saver. It may be turned off by default. I don't use gnome, so I can't help you on the exact button clicks.
