Check the restricted drivers console. You may find luck in there...

Also, try posting in the Ubuntu forums... they can definitely help you out.

    You have Intel HDA?
First, have you checked if the volume is muted in the mixer?

Yes. I did. 20 times in fact. :)

I got it working...but don't ask me how because I'm not sure what I did exactly....

    It just started working.

For the new Dells you need to update to Alsa 1.15 or later, of which there are instructions on the Ubuntu forums.

It has to with the way the Intel HDA (sigmatel audio not intel hda) module is loaded in the kernel. There are a couple of ways to this and it is somewhat dependent on the kernel. The previous post with ALSA driver update is part of the answer. But you might also be able to insert the correct switches with your current driver. If not you may have to manually compile the drivers and then insert the correct module. This is not really difficult but it is tough if you have not done this before. If you have windows loaded or can make a temp dual boot it will narrow down the drivers being loaded there. (this helps in figuring out the switches to use) Then do lspci | grep "Audio" it will tell what device is being used. In your case I assume it will report back something like this (00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)). It will help to narrow down the search in google for the best instruction on doing the install. Sorry I don't remember what I had to do on my other machine to make it work and I have already passed it along to someone else. If you need more info let me know I will be happy to search around some more.

    ------------------
i have another question, i tried to install the nvidia driver using envy on the kernel with the sound working but i get an error , "bad luck, the kernel headers for the target kernel can not be found and you did not specify other valid kernel headers" how can i solve that?
    thks

Before we go to far check this. Right click on the sound manager (should be a speaker in the title bar). When in comes up Click file>change device>1: sigamatel xxxx make sure the PCM is not muted and the slider is all the way to the top (max). I just discovered that my one sony is using the same chipset. (duh) After I did this it works fine. You might have to check the settings under the intel hda as well. Sometimes theses are not linked properly.

As for the nvidia drivers I skipped the envy and just clicked on System>Administration>Restricted Drivers Manager, entered my password, then selected Nvidia. If you are using 7.10 it should have the most current driver there. If not it will work just fine.

As for the compiling the driver issue you will need the development packages. I in Ubuntu it is called base extra packages. Sorry I haven't had to do much compiling in Ubuntu. I have yet to find a need for it. Everything has worked for me out of the box. I have had to roll back a package or 2 using 7.10 but that was more because the current package was an update and did not include everything from the previous package. If this does not help let me know and I will start mine from scratch again to see if we can figure out what is wrong.

i am sure it is not that volume controller's problem; if i click it, it says no device is found to control or gstreamer plugin blah blah blah.
when i go into the sound, there is no device found for sound as if it was turned off from the bio completely.
and i belive i already installed development packages... long time ago as i tried to solve the problem my self... anyway how do we install the "previous package"?

http://packages.ubuntu.com/ Here is the link to the Ubuntu page. Select the version you want and the package you want. I download them in case I need to roll forward or back when trying to work out a problem.
