First off, I really dont know much about linux as I wish I did, I wanted to get into Linux by starting out with Fedora but never got around to it. I recently installed Jolicloud and it comes with Wine, and from what I've been able to research you're able to run windows applications in linux so I've tried installing Yahoo Messenger various versions from oldversion.com (not all though) and wanted to ask if anyone has a solution to this? or know of a certain version that works fine in Linux.
If not, is there any other way to run Yahoo! Messenger possibly with voice conferencing feature? any other way or a 3rd party software that works with this feature? Y! Messenger for Linux hasnt been updated since 2005 so I need another workaround, please and thank you![]()
Ive tried and most of the versions from 7.5, 8.0, 8.1 keeps going in a loop at the sign in page, only version that Ive been able to load properly is surprisingly the newest version available from messenger.yahoo.com/ but after it signs in it has a problem displaying all the graphics? and crashes when I try to click on an ID to IM.
EDIT: Ive never used Wine so maybe they're some settings I might need to sort out?

According to Winehq.com, others haven't been able to get it working:
WineHQ - Yahoo! Messenger
You could look at something like skype for linux
Download the latest version of Skype for Linux
or
empathy:
Empathy - GNOME Live! -
Unfortunately most of my group meetings and chats happen on Yahoo since it has a better interface to have upto 40-50 people in a voice conference so skype has its downside there otherwise Empathy looks quite interesting Ill have it a go
thanks for that, I just dunno how to, or if it'll run in Joli OS or not

I think all you have to do is open a terminal (in accessories) and type sudo apt-get install empathy, and yes it should run

Pidgin supports yahoo messenger. I don't use it for that myself but yahoo is available to add for a new account, along with 2 or 3 dozen other message clients.

Should be available in your repository, the goofy purple bird theme doesn't transfer over to the program itself. -
Thanks for the intructions I successfully got it installed but it didnt really have that conferencing feature that I'm looking for. Not to get confused with chat rooms
Voice conferencing that I'm talking about is LIKE a chat room but its between you and whoever you invite, say You create it and want to chat with 4 of your classmates to discuss your upcoming project. Meebo supports conferencing but without voice which is what I'm looking for.
Softwares like Pidgin or Empathy, ebuddy all these are all-in-one chat clients which is great for one on one chats, please dont be offended I dont mean to mean I'm just trying to explain what I'm specifically looking for and if there's anything available within my requirements, but I really appreciate all of your help and inputs so far -
you can read through this:
Linux.com :: Three alternative Linux instant messaging applications, and see if anything is in there that will suit what your needs.
and if you can't find anything..i suggest dual booting and using windows for yahoo messenger. -
Thanks, Ill check it out, atm I am dual-booting, but I rather start looking into other OS's aside from Windows and they only thing thats holding me back is this problem with Yahoo Messenger. I'd like to get into using Linux preferably Fedora but since my work and studies revolves around us having to use Yahoo Messenger as main way of communicating between each other since I take online courses.
stable Yahoo Messenger with Wine?
