i set up 10.04 64-bit on this laptop but when i select suspend, it starts the screensaver. if click the mouse or press a key it toggle freezes the screensaver. cannot get back the desktop and have to completely power off the machine .. does anyone know how this is resolved ? the video card on this laptop is dedicated always on ATI 5850 (not switchable graphics)...restricted drivers installed

Try sudo pm-suspend from the console after setting the no_console_suspend boot parameter.

i found that the problem was due to usb3. see this thread:

i fixed it using the info in post # 6, however upon resume, i am stuck at a screensaver and cannot revive GNOME. must power the machine down & restart -

What if you disable the screensaver/lock or change it to something simple like blank screen instead?
