I've never used linux before but am going to be in the market for a new laptop in the coming months and am looking to get into linux when I do. I figured ubuntu would be a good distro to start with. I checked amazon for some ubuntu books but don't know what's good. Can anyone suggest one or two?

Well, you can just buy any notebook and the majority of them will run Ubuntu. Though if you want something that *comes* with Ubuntu, then check out the system76 notebooks. They are quite good, so I heard.

I appreciate the suggestion but I meant an actual written book on the subject so I can study up before hand.

There are so many resources online that involve Linux. You can take what you learn about anything Linux and apply it to Ubuntu.

You may want to read up on Apt.

There is a Linux Command Line eBook (pdf) by William E. Shotts, Jr. that is pretty awesome too. Check it out. (It's free and current)

I would avoid anything in print pertaining to Linux. Even the most recent books will lag behind, sometimes by an entire OS revision.

If you stick with the current LTS release, using the Ubuntu Manual posted above would be a good step. Besides that, the Ubuntu forums will answer just about any question you could think of pertaining to the OS. There's no sense in spending 20-60 bucks for a quality manual, only to find that it's out of date, or going to become outdated when the next revision to Ubuntu drops.
