Please try it again and write down the exact error message. We really have no clue without more info.

i too am struggling to get ubuntu on my computer.i downloaded the the ubuntu iso, put it onto a pen drive and tried to boot from it, failed. so i downloaded it again and put it on to an external hard drive and tried to boot it, failed.I then discovered i can't boot from USB. i can't burn it onto cd either, so i took it next door and used another machine. armed with a cd i popped it in the cd drive, no luck there, i restarted, another failure. i then used winimage to extract the file and took it next door to burn another cd. popped it in the cd drive...nothing happened. restart nothing happened.
i have read a couple of different tutorials on the subject, and they more or less just tell you to pop in the cd and follow the instructions.

Phew, i feel better after that wee rant LOL

I would welcome any suggestions on where i have gone wrong.
Does it matter which cd burner is used to make the cd?
would it be better to try it with a different distro?
although i made sure my booting order was cd rom before hard drive in bios, is there another setting somewhere else?
is the computer i am using a problem ? (compaq armada 110 Intel celeron 700 MHz, 376 MB ram)
Should i give up trying to download it and order a cd?

    help:confused2:

Neil, you need to burn the CD as an image, not just put the iso on a CD, just extracting the files and burning those won't work either. You need to burn the CD as an image, otherwise it won't write the bootsector on the CD to allow booting from it.

See this page for instructions on burning an iso as an image: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

I have a DV9420US. Have Ubuntu installed on the 2nd HDD. I needed to add the NOAPIC cheat code. When you see the menu with about 5 options on it and it is counting down to execute the 1st option, press F6 and add NOAPIC. I found this on Ubuntu's site.

Called HP about the "Boot Diskette on key", not supported. Now, when I installed GRUB in the MBR, I lost the F11 (Boot recovery partition) AND the Blue media keys. Seems like HP is writing code in the MBR. So, I let the installer add GRUB to my Linux partition and I burn a CD to boot Linux. I did not (YET) try to burn my boot image onto a RW. If you install it this way, you have 3 options to boot your system. 1.) GRUB in the MBR (MAYBE) lose F11 and anything else HP wrote there. 2.) buy an external FDD or HDD and boot from it or, 3.) burn boot images.

Good luck and keep us posted

    Might i suggest using wubi?

It installs ubuntu as a file in your windows partition and uses the windows bootloader to select between operating systems. Obviously its not ideal as you are not installing it on a native ext3 etc. partition, but it works surprisingly well

hooray....! im back, and I'm using ubuntu.
after a few failed attemps at burning the iso, I noticed that the tutorial said 8x speed , I was using 12x speed tried it, worked. I have booted from the cd but have a wee problem?
The desk top apears, so i click install, language screen appears, double click English,
location/time zone screen appears, i choose london .... nothing happens, i double click, nothing happens, i try to move the window to see if there is an "OK" button doesn't move.
So basically i am stuck running from the cd until i find a way to move to the next step????
