In order to get your wireless working you will need to install network manager. Open a terminal (Applications>Accessories>Terminal) and type:
Code:sudo apt-get install network-manager-gnome

i really want to know how to use unbuntu but i think its too hard. how do u install beryl. i seen vids of it and i want to try it. does the wireless in unbuntu search of AP ?

I found this to be a helpful guide to get started:
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy -
installing network-manager will automatically connect to available access points
Instructions for installing Beryl on Ubuntu can be found here: http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install_Beryl_on_Ubuntu#Ubuntu_6.10_.28Edgy_Eft.29 -
i just type this "sudo apt-get install network-manager-gnome" and it will intsall my wireless? after reading those links, i dont understand it lol

Feisty Fawn is going to be great with Network Manager preinstalled and ability to detect packages needed for certain media types.

Wireless should work out of the box, it did with my same card.
Follow the directions here to install Automatix, which will then install your codecs for audio and DVD. http://www.debianadmin.com/install-automatix2-in-ubuntukubuntuxubuntu.html
You have to go into the Terminal then type that stuff in. To get to the terminal, Applications—>Accessories—>Terminal .
For network manager, you will type what BigV said. It will prompt for a password. Enter the password you chose then hit enter. Then, it will install automatically. -
Go to the paypal site directly. Not through a link in your email. The paypal emails should have your first and last name in them, not a generic greeting. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/cps/securitycenter/general/UnderstandPhishing-outside
Read that.
Start a new thread when you have something different to talk about. -
mfmbcpman thx for info.the intel 3495 abg works right out of box?
-
does files get fragmented in linux? like xp?
-
linux looks very hard to a noob like me
-
well, it's different. I find XP fairly frustrating now, myself. I'm "tech guy" for my family, and the multi-user XP desktop that they use and I sometimes game on is such a pain in the butt. I had to give all accounts administrator privileges just so that things stopped screwing up, and there's no way to temporarily enter the administrator state to change something. Plus, the darn thing is already feeling sluggish, and I reformatted it only about 2 months ago.
I'm not certain about your wireless card, you might have to install a package with the Intel firmware in it. Try reading this: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy#How_to_get_ipw3945_and_wep.2Fwpa_to_work
Files can become somewhat fragmented, although it isn't that huge of an issue with ext3 (the default filesystem for Ubuntu). In any case, there is an automated check of your file system every 30th boot which fixes any errors.
While perhaps in Windows it's harder for you to screw things up because the really messy stuff is buried about 5 dialog boxes down, you pretty much don't have to worry about someone ELSE messing your computer up through viruses or spyware. -
The linux file system doesn't need defragmentation. Explanation here http://geekblog.oneandoneis2.org/index.php/2006/08/17/why_doesn_t_linux_need_defragmenting
Sorry for misleading you. Run this from the Terminal and it should work after a reboot.
Then, you should be able to type in the SSID of your network in Network Manager and connect.
Code:sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-generic
BTW, what kind of computer are you using? -
I'm not sure or not but you might have to add extra repositories to download that above. If it doesn't work, try http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy#How_to_add_extra_repositories
