    fingerprint reader

    etc?

can anyone direct me to where to go then so i can install and have most things working, i dont care about the webcam, i'd just like the fingerprint reader and the graphics switch to work.

but i wont install if its gonna be slower than xp pro. I'm hoping it'll run faster

In my experience, Linux, in general, is much faster than Windows. Ubuntu probably isn't among the fastest distros, but even it is very fast.

Not sure about your other questions, but if I were hoping that everything would work immediately (not sure that will happen without a bit of work on your part), I'd install the lastest version which I think is 7.10 (and still for a short time, beta). Also, unless you're set on Ubuntu, you might consider PCLinuxOS 2007. It seems to work very well, too.

there arent any drivers for the fingerprint reader yet.. so that wont work

and, you should wait for the new ubuntu 7.10 its coming out on the 18 or 19 (i dont remember which one) ive never tried PClinuxOS so i cant comment on that, but personally i like fedora and ubuntu the best of the ones ive tried.

    pclinuxos 2007 seems very friendly.

i'm leaning to either that or ubuntu 7.10

i havent read much here on pclinuxos though. Does anyone here use it?

oh, and thanks for all the replies/help.
