Reinstall Ubuntu. All the programs of studio are in the regular Ubuntu repositories, the studio theme is too. Have you activated the restricted drivers?

yeah if it works in regular ubuntu then install ubuntu and download the studio programs, themes, and kernel updates.

The big different between the two is the way in which studio handles sound in the kernel. The code is a bit different to allow for less latency with sound input and output for recording devices.

you should be able to find all this info with just a google search of "turn ubuntu into ubuntu studio" or something similar.

    go into windows

    download easybcd

    then
    start-->admin tools-->computer management--> disk management
reformat your ubuntu partition to NTFS format

run easy BCD and have it restore the vista boot loader

then go back to disk management and delete/reformat the small bit of space allocated for "swap"

from here you can use disk management to extend an existing partition or keep the partition for backups etc.

after that you're back to where you were before you installed ubuntu.

just go into the add/remove programs menu
    and install

ardour 2 , inkscape , blender, pitivi, kino, and cinepaint

then go into the package manager and install the wacom tools set, and the raw camera files set

You'll retain wifi support if you do this as it doesn't mess with the wifi drivers at all.

i'm not sure what you plan to use studio for (video, 3-d animation, 2-d design) or all of the above.

but there are a ton of sweet programs in the graphics repositories.
i don't use ubuntu to do any video or sound work (short of audacity) but i do use gimp, inkscape, and font forge from time to time

    to get the studio theme

open a terminal and put this in it

    "sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-theme ubuntustudio-icon-theme ubuntustudio-wallpapers ubuntustudio-gdm-theme"

they'll be in your Appearance Settings window

oh and rep me when you're done.. so i can get the administration off my back a little.. thanks

I just checked the Ubuntu Studio site. You do realize the only download options for Ubuntu Studio is the Alternate CD option? Therefore, with those, it is assumed that users possibly don't have network access so the thinking might be to install basic packages/software along with the multimedia software packages. Hence, no wireless configuration is provided beforehand.

You have to probably manually install your own drivers and enable/install firmware for your wireless card. You can have the same wireless setup for Ubuntu Studio as Ubuntu except you have to do what Ubuntu already does for wireless and the extra mile (if any) that you might do even in Ubuntu.

It seems the Ubuntu Studio team is trying to conserve bandwidth when you download from their servers.

about the Ubuntu Studio latency...why do we want more lag with regular ubuntu? Why did it take a kernel patch for Studio? What's the tradeoff?

the upgrade is just a patch to the kernel that allows immediate cpu time, which will reduce audio latency during input and output of intensive audio and video applications. For playing a music file you wouldn't need it, But for playing back 50 tracks of music at once you want a direct route to the processing power of the cpu. It's called the real-time kernel.
