i am wondering if i install ubuntu on my laptop..and have vista on my desktop ..and with using my existing home wireless would i be able to use that in ubuntu the same as if i would be using vista on both? i mean as far as connecting and not having trouble with it?
-
If it isn't a Broadcom card, it will work with Ubuntu with little or no trouble.
-
Yes, you could access the network on both laptop and desktop no matter what OS they are.
-
I have a Broadcom card, which I got to work fine by using a "restricted driver".
I also needed one for my NVIDIA card. And this is Ubuntu. -
where do i find this "restricted" driver for that and nvidia?
also..how long does the ubuntu installation process take? I started it and then when it goes into Loading Linux Kernel it's been at 3% for the last 5 minutes...
....going on 11 minutes -
I would say that's not good. Ubuntu installation takes probably around 10 minutes total, I think that's what it was for me....
First you need to check some repositories so you will have the right packages available, and then when you go to change your appearance preferences, under visual effects, you will probably be prompted to update your video card.
After that, you will receive a notification that you are using a restricted driver, and, at least for me, it showed a restricted Broadcom driver available, which worked! -
well i'm gonna reformat my drives again and then see if that works..i think the problem could have been is that i had vista installed while i was trying to install ubuntu without any other partition for the ubuntu OS. so hopefully if i reformat my drive and then just install ubuntu and not vista i'm hopin that will do the trick!
going off the subject a little here..i have a friend who has ubuntu and he loves it..he says he won't go back to windows...how do some of the rest of you feel? -
Good luck with your hardware! Hopefully the drivers in the Restricted section work for you. They didn't for me, so I still had to use Ndiswrapper. It's not fun at all. -
i'm just hopin i can get the darn thing back to normal after all this stuff i've had to try and do...lol..it better my hubby needs it for school
-
You should really research how to manipulate partitions to install Ubuntu - it's critical. Ubuntu is cool, but I still feel at home in Windows; I don't know how to do a lot of things in Ubuntu, and getting sound to work has been a no-go so far.
-
what sound problems do u have?
i also checked to see how the bootup ubuntu cd would work in my desktop ( i went to check cd for defects)(even with vista installed) it loaded the linux kernel fine...and now i put it back in the lappy and it still sits at 3% for the longest time... -
like they said thats not right, but i was wondering.. anyone know a semi simple way to get a Realtek RTL8187B working? mine isnt working and i saw a way to fix it but it confuses me. im new to ubuntu too. ive used it before but never stuck with it. gunna try and stick with it this time but wireless is a must for me.
-
i know its not right..so how do i fix it?
-
My sound doesn't work, period.
-
is there some kind of extra driver you have to install for your sound ..ya think..
-
I was told the support for it is in a driver that Ubuntu doesn't ship with, and I have to download a bunch of backport modues to get it, but I tried downloading linux-backports-modules-i386, and it SCREWED UP MY SCREEN!!!
-
what type of sound card do u have?
what does your screen look like now.. -
maybe i can help out...
1. what computer are you using? (include chipset info)
2. if "loading linux kernel" freezes, then its not the partitioning - if you're isntalling from the cd something in your hardware froze the kernel - might want to try the alternate install cd.
3. what sound chips do you have.
4. what wireless chips do you have. -
compaq presario F572US
windows vista home premium..well it's still not working with the hp recovery disk properly so i onlyhave the 20.4 gb partition showing...posted this problem in another thread
nvidia geforce Go 6100
conextant high definition audio
broadcom wireless-nvidia nforce networking controller -
also, if you haven't deleted windows yet, there is a bios update for your computer. windows is required to run it.
before starting: before i say anything, i should ask if you want to go the 64-bit route.
64bit: faster processing
32bit: better battery life, only until next ubuntu version (8.04, april 2008); perhaps easier software installation, if you plan to download pre-compiled packages, instead of using the package manager.

so, to get linux started from the cd, you have to add "noapic" at your boot parameters. (got this from google).
in order to do that, when you boot, choose F6.
you will be presented with a line of words. before the -- at the end, add "noapic" and a space.
hopefully it works. -
okay i'll be trying it..i'll post back later
-
2) That's not a problem, I just can't get sound working
3) Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC
4) Broadcom something
Maybe I should boot into Ubuntu and check this stuff out.
Windows doesn't tell me the guts of the devices..... -
its almost the same package... i don't know how brave you are.
the problem is that the ICH8 southbridge is fairly new and most distros don't have a recent kernel or ALSA. -
Yeah, that's the guide I followed, if you notice the part about substituting i386 for generic, cause that's what I have.
But I got the sound working, courtesy of Telkwa linking to a post. All I had to do was add my sound card to a list of some sorts.....
.....something like sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
Anyway, it was sick.
