i really cant figure out how to update these programs in ubuntu. Every time i load either of them they come up with a warning "program out of date, please update" (or similar).
I can download the new version and use it, but I would like to know how to update the one that is installed already so that when i go to applications -> >program< it uses the updated one.
anyone know how to do this? update manager doesnt take care of this for me either

How did you install these programs? If you manually installed them yourself without using the package manager, then they will be invisible to it.
Try uninstalling those applications, then installing them again using Synaptic. -
The thing is with versions of Linux like Ubuntu, the recommended course of action is to go with the "already installed" version. The one the distro comes with, because that is tested and works with the rest of the software on your machine. The update manager just asks Ubuntu what the latest version is, it doesn't check the myriad of other websites.
Is there a reason you need the latest version? Would you consider using one of the 8.10 builds of Ubuntu to get the latest versions? Otherwise, your other option is to do exactly what you're doing... use the software outside of the repository/update manager system. -
i just installed using update manager
so, your saying that there is no way to update? im kinda surprised, i figured there would be someway to manually update these things
guess ill just have to update my version to the next one (or fedora) -
