    i had this laptop for awhile and never got any reason to use this feature until a friend requested to voice chat with me. Anyone ever got it working on linux?

    my os: Debian 5 i386

    Never tried. Have you checked your volume control to verify that the microphone volume control isn't muted and it's turned up?

    i tried to "speak" to the visible sound output device while pressing test but to no avail...

    Switch Sound Capture to OSS. It should work now. If it doesn't, try toggling between Mic and Front Mic.
