I used to have my music in ogg or mp3 format, recently i started to use flac format.
Why I ask - there is new 'hate' article on LHB - linux haters blog on ogg format

made my day brigther ... :D

Anyway, if you don't know the flac format, i recommend read out more here:
    http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html

Mine are all mp3 and m4a thanks to an iPod.....use Amarok :) Amarok will also play .wma's if they're not corrupted with DRM. ;) I have a bunch of those that need tending to.

    Hi guys,
any tips how you transfer files from one format to another ...?
I just been doing some transfers ogg -> mp3, to burn some music to listen to in my car (player in my car knows only mp3...)

    1. yum install sox lame (on my distro)

tip - replace 'spaces' with 'underscores' in the names of your music files in folder you're currently in:
    for x in * ; do mv "$x" `echo -n $x | tr " " "_"`; done
    or (if you use 'sed')
    for x in * ; do mv "$x" `echo -n $x | sed -e s/" "/_/g`; done

    2. ogg -> wav
    for x in *.ogg ; do sox $x `echo $x|awk -F . '{print $1 ".wav"}'`; done
    3. wav -> mp3
    for x in *.wav ; do lame -h $x `echo $x|awk -F . '{print $1 ".mp3"}'`; done

    Hi guys,
i just want to apologize to all of you who might be offended by my initial post in this thread i started, since i used 'inappropriate language' there.
I was made aware of this by moderator.
It was just mistake on my side, since i reposted one message here from "linux haters blog" which was a bit full of "hate" and it didn't come up to my mind someone could get offended and that i violate this very forum.
I love linux, it's my hobby and also my job. Sometimes i got a bit frustrated by some flaws (pssst!) that linux have. LHB is then great relaxation for me to read, even though the guy(s) there uses 'rough' language and the discussions there are full of "hate" and "inappropriate words", but in situation where some server is 'down' and you gotta listen to some dam* manager about 'up' time going down, it's relaxing - at least for me.
Again, I'm sorry, if some younger or kinder or gentler forum member felt offended, it really wasn't meant that way.
    Nice day to you all.

i knew what u were trying to say..so i just overlooked that part..though at the same time did have to chuckle..
have never been over to LBH..looks like quite the read though..ha :p

I just use MP3. Embarrassing, I know, but I haven't gotten around to converting to FLAC or something...did rip a few songs once, though. But I forget if foobar2k plays it it Windows, because that would make a difference for me.

    foobar plays flac.

I hate the sound of medium birtate OGG as it's artifacty in the places in that I hate artifacts. I dislike AAC as well in the same way.

Id use FLAC for backup of my most important disks, but AAC for everything else.

AAC is the new MP3 its just as compatible and better in every way, but unlike new cpus or new hard drives its not like when you buy your next new laptop where it will have the new stuff updated for you already. Using AAC has to be done by you. Most every day average people dont know about it or know how its better.

Everything on itunes is AAC, and even your average walmart cell phone or mp3 player supports it now too.

i once put a bunch of my collection in OGG vorbis 499kbps
i dont even know how the software did that, but i like it.

i dont think soundconverter works very well. often i find on a new installation it doesnt work at all. and not because of missing libraries, just fails...
i think soundkonverter works better for some reason. in any case it has more options

499kbps is almost as big as lossless.

I use FLAC for anything that is high quality, MP4 for anything else. I would use ogg theora but I am limited by a number of factors. Primarily that ogg does not play on my music player.

I use FLAC for everything I encode myself (i.e., when digitizing vinyl, when ripping CDs, when archiving the now-obsolete MiniDisks I still have, etc.)

When buying music online, I choose FLAC if available (e.g., I buy music in FLAC format from junodownload.com, I transcode the WAVs I buy from beatport.com to FLAC). Needless to say, for music that's only available from iTunes you're forced to take AAC. Music from Amazon.com/7-Digital/zero-inch.com unfortunately comes as MP3.

OGG is my preferred format for the music that I put on my Android phone. (Note that the upcoming Songbird 1.7 can transcode your FLACs and WAVs to OGG automagically when syncing your Android device.)
