I currently am running vista and ubuntu but all I ever use is vista because many things do not work with ubuntu on my T61. What is the best way to delete my linux while I wait for gutsy? will it take a lot of work for vista to recognize the new hard drive space? Then could i just re partition my hard drive using gparted later when gutsy comes out?

I went through thid the other day.

Use Vista - Disc management to clean out the linux partitions. Reboot with Vista disc to repair the boot partition. Otherwise you will get a "error 22" from the grub. Look on the Ubuntu Forums for grub error 22 and there is a link that tells you exactly how to repair the boot partition through Vista. Sorry, I don't remeber the exact commands.

so if i do this vista will now recognize my entire disk for usage and nothing will be lost? Then i can just use vista or gparted to partition the hd again when gutsy comes out if it had better support for my t61?

As far as I can tell, you should be good. Although I didn't try to reclaim the free space for Vista, instead I installed the 64bit version as opposed to the 32bit version I initially installed. Nothing was lost from my Vista partitions. Just make sure when you get into the Disc management in Vista you clean out the correct partitions.

Clear out the Linux partitions, and then (BEFORE YOU REBOOT) you can run either "fixmbr" or "fdisk /mbr" from a command prompt (Start->Run->cmd). That should get you rebooting directly into Vista.

And if you want to keep the partition division as it is, just wait for Gutsy and don't reformat anything. If you want to expand your Windows drive to fill the whole partition, reboot with a Feisty boot CD and then delete the old Linux partition and then expand the Windows partition to fill the empty space. Easy-peasy. Just make sure that if you nuke the Linux data from inside Windows, you run the MBR fixing command before you reboot, otherwise you have to mess with the Vista boot disc and all that.

I plan on adjusting my partitions and giving vista about 35 more gb's from my linux partition. I also wanted my hd to boot directly to vista for the time being.

also, its too late now that I have deleted the partition. I just to figure out why i got the above message when i typed in fixmbr in the cmd prompt.

Check to see if you can find the program "fdisk" or "fixmbr" in your Windows directory. If so, then you can run it. Use the Windows search command (probably Windows Key + F... I haven't used Vista)

Resizing is one of Vista's biggest problems. Seems everyone is restricted to only a certain amount of resizing on a Vista Partition. I've never heard why this is tho.

I believe that the NTFS filesystem changed somewhat with the release of Vista, which has affected some of the repartitioning tools.
