I just installed Ubuntu on my XPS1210 and everything seems to be working fine except for the wireless card. It's a Dell 1500 802.11n Draft card. Does anyone know where I can find the driver and how should I go about installing it? Thanks

    Which version of Ubuntu?

Did you try the restricted drivers manager?

Ubuntu 7.10 32bit edition. What is the restricted device manager?

Here, lemme boot into Ubuntu to give you better directions...

Okedokie. Check System > Administration and see if there is a "Restricted Drivers Manager."

Oh, and also be sure to go to System > Administration > Software Sources and check the box "Proprietary drivers for devices (restricted)".

I don't know how much effort Dell expends in obscuring from the consumer the actual wireless chipset. That's what you need to find out. Is it a Broadcom wireless card? I think most of the "Dell" wireless cards are, and Broadcom chips have a reputation for being a pain. I don't know if that's improved at all.

Any discussion of your model at the Dell section of the Ubuntu forum?

Or at the Dell Linux forums?

Another option if you're up for it might be opening up the laptop and swapping out the Dell wireless card for an Intel card...they're not very expensive on eBay.

I noticed you just posted in Ubuntu Forums. Maybe someone there can help you with the details.

Ubuntu 8.04 beta is out and I'm working in it right now. It may support your wireless card better than 7.1 so give it a try. It will eventually update to the LTS version of Ubuntu.

I'm guessing it's a Broadcom card, like mine; if it is, the Restricted Drivers Manager is the place to find a driver.

Linux support for Broadcom cards is really undependable at this point... I have tried getting mine working (bcm4312 rev 02) several times, while others with different versions of the card are just fine.

Hook it up via a cable and run all the updates and see if that works. If not try using ndiswrapper.

Issue the command "lspci" and show us the output on the Broadcom chip. It is probably a different Broadcom model.
