I have the Surface Book 2 512g and for a machine that is almost $3k the SSD speeds are pretty awful.
Any ideas why?
Below i've compared it to the 960 Pro and PM961 that I also own. All 512g

You might use Samsung Nvme driver to boost those speeds on 960 pro and on PM series you can use only MSFT driver.
Maybe your SSD in SB2 is hitting huge temps while operating and that is causing it to throttle. Maybe adding some heatsink or thermal pads on SSD will reduce the temps if it isn't soldered to mobo.
I did increase the NVMe speed of MSFT driver by changing the message queue limit from 65 to 2048. -
The SB2 is a sealed unit, so it will likely break trying to open it. I'd check firmware updates from Microsoft to see if it can fix the fan/heat issue. Try also adjusting the performance levels using the power control for appropriate tasks. I've typically found that Better Performance works great. Going full bore on these units will start cooking your lap and will definitely start throttling. I also wonder about the longevity of these devices due to heat.
