    Hi,

Just got the GS43VR. I'm having a weird issue with Dragon Center where I can't seem to adjust the fan control. If I do advanced I only see one node as shown below, and even if I put it at 150% the fan speed does not change. I also tried basic mode and if I set it to high the RPM goes to about 1700 otherwise it stays at 0 and the laptop gets super hot.

    Any ideas about this software?

Have you uninstalled any MSI preinstalled software (namely SCM)?

Yeah I installed a nvme ssd (this thing flyssss) and installed everything from scratch. I'll check to make sure SCM is installed. Will respond back if that fixes it.

    Thanks for the reply :)

How about BIOS & EC update? Have you done those?

    no... I didn't know there's a bios update. What's the EC update?

However, did you get rid of the microstuttering after those updates?

Thanks for the answer by the way :)

Wierd installed SCM and still the same deail. I also tried re-installing Dragon Center and same thing. Is this maybe how it's supposed to work? I put the fan on high and it hits about 2.5K RPM, where as Cooler Baster mode hits about 6K. I was expecting high would go to 6K as well, but maybe that just how this was designed?

Also, has anyone had any experience with controlling the fan from Linux? I did a live boot of Elementary OS and it works great, but I would like to control the fan and set it about 3K RPM to keep it nice and cool.

Just got my GS43VR a couple days ago. Been following this thread pretty closely! A lot of great information here.
Unfortunately, I didn't hit the lottery either. Mine is a bit more severe than the "micro" stuttering. The screen flashes and I get some tearing as well.
    (Same issue here: )

The good news is, when I disable the Killer WLAN (yes, I know...), everything seems to run perfectly fine.
I've tried uninstalling the Killer performance suite, updating drivers using INF, but to no avail.
I'm guessing the only way around this now is to replace the Killer WLAN with an Intel.
Opened up the backside to see just how difficult it may be to do that, and everyone was right; smack dab right behind some heat pipes.
I could replace the nic by myself if it isn't actually that difficult, but I did buy it from XoticPC. Maybe they can do it for me, for a price of course.
It seems like this is the only issue with my laptop, and since it has a fairly obvious solution, I don't want to return it.
    What do y'all think?

creators update including bios update didn't work for me. stuttering, screen flashing still exist. but strange enough, setting screen brightness at 100% did the trick for me (could someone explain this!).

Sorry all, am new here, but I have an MSI GS43VR which I got for about 6 months now. Initially the machine worked fine, and as a gamer I installed a bunch of games from Bioshock Infinite to Sleeping Dogs, and everything ran silky smooth (Bioshock Infinite was at 60+fps). A few months later, after not having played for a while, I discovered that suddenly all the games run very slowly. So I checked 3DMark, and my Time Spy score is only 670 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060-6GB(1x) and Intel Core i7-6700HQ. Median is supposed to be around *4000*. What happened?? I'm not the biggest techie so any clues as to why would be really appreciated!

You might want to try uninstalling the Dragon Center and installing Silent Option to control the fans: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=255972.0 (I hear that the Skylake version should work whether you have Skylake or Kaby Lake).

Hi guys I am trying to update the bios but I am having some issue.

I downloaded the E14A3IMS.107 bios version from MSI website and put it on a USB stick. When I try to update it in the bios I get this error:
    "Wrong image format 11"

what's wrong? I tried to format the USB key using different file systems but it didn't help.

My current BIOS version is E14A3IMS.30A and the EC version is 14A3EMS1.104.

    Thanks for any help

ok guys, I managed to update the bios... I downloaded the 6re version before :D

IMPORTANT!! To everyone updating the bios, remember that it will set the legacy boot mode in the BIOS settings, hence the PCIe SSD won't be recognized anymore. Today I lost 2 hours (and a lot of years of my life :D :D ) trying to figure out what was wrong after the bios update, since my computer wouldn't boot anymore, saying to connect a proper boot drive. Well, this was the reason...

and resetting to default settings didn't work for me, as by default looks like boot mode is set to legacy.

on the bright side, I didn't have any lag after I managed to boot windows after the bios update. But I feel it's still to early to say if it really worked...

    Guys do you think it's a good price for a GS43VR @ 1515$ for the i7-7700HQ, 1 ram of 16gb, 1 NVME 256gb, 1 HDD of 1TO and two year warranty?

Value is in the eye of the beholder - but I just bought one of these for $1399 at MicroCenter with the 128GB M.2 SSD - otherwise it was identical to what you have above - so I'd say $1515 is a pretty good deal to have a larger and faster SSD.

Hey everyone, my introduction: I'm a big time geek, and computer enthusiast. I just purchased a used 6th gen i7 gs43vr because its size and features appealed to me. I was able to pick it up on eBay for $940!

I swapped out the 1tb HDD with a 512gb SSD.

So far, it's been a great laptop, but I am a little bit underwhelmed by how it utilizes the components that it has inside. I get the feeling that the laptop is throttling itself quite heavily when it is under load. This throttling is not due to temperature but a limited power supply.

The power supply that comes with the GS43VR is a 180W with an output of 19VDC 9.5A or 19.5VDC 9.23A like this one: https://www.amazon.com/iTEKIRO-Adapter-Phantom-Pro-006-Stealth/dp/B01N2O1VH0

The reason I feel that the laptop isn't getting enough power is due to a number of things:
    • The GPU usage rarely goes above 80%
    • CPU usage also rarely stays above 80-90% when the GPU is under heavy load
    • Computation software benchmarking shows the GPU is only performing 60% compared to a stock founders edition card.
    • My 2 desktop compute rigs with pascal cards (each having 5x 1070), when they are not getting enough power from the outlets also throttle down in the same manner. This happens without any indication of the power not being sufficient. If I switch them to having separate power outlets, for example, the processing power steps back up to the original highest output.
Some of the larger sized 1060 laptops by MSI come with a 230W adapter, for example the Dominator GT72VR 6RD. These laptops have identical specs as the gs43vr in terms of processor and video card. Why did they give us such a small power supply as the only option for this PC? Would it be possible to use a larger adapter like the 230W from the Dominator series with our GS43VR?

Replying to my own post lol
I bought a 230W charger that is similar to the one used for the Dominator, and also an adapter to adapt the 7.4mm x 5.0mm plug of the larger charger to the 5.5mm x 2.5mm plug of the GS43VR:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G700QQ0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The only concern that I have is heat of the connector and adapter during high load - which I'll watch closely during testing.

The adapter has the same output 19V voltage as the original that came with my GS43VR:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01D39WNPY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I will report back with results later during the week.

So, I'm using the new adapter that is 230W, and I have a meter that can check the power draw of the laptop. It will only draw at most 140 watts! What gives? Is the computer somehow internally limited to power draw?

Interesting! Has performance changed at all?

This is why I was looking at picking up a Razer 165W power supply - I heard that it works with these laptops with no modification and it is far lighter than the one that comes with the GS43VR.

Performance is identical, but the brick is capable of 230W, and no matter what I do, the laptop won't draw more than 150watts or so. I still haven't tested with my full suite of benchmarking or compute apps. Just PLAYERUNKNOWN's BATTLEGROUNDS :)
The adapter which converts the size of the connector from 7.5mm to 5.5mm gets just a tiny bit warm, but that's all.

Also, I noticed that if I install MSI Afterburner, the voltage and power controls on the GPU are locked / off limits. Is there any way to truly adjust the amount of power that the card gets? I think that this is the key.

    Hey!
I have a GS43VR with a SSD and HHD and the 6700HQ. Though I am wondering, has anyone noticed noise under high load from the middle of the laptop?

Also, anyone here who has tried changing the cooling paste after delivery? Got a tip that it might lead to much more efficient cooling then the stock paste.

PS: for anyone who is still on dragon center, I don't really notice any difference other then lower temps when using "comfort" instead of "high performance", also the HDD doesnt make noise in idle and the previous described "load noise" is less!

Have you tried a clean driver install?
Have you recently updated dragon center?
You can always perform a recovery windows install or if you have a previous version of windows saved revert to that. If you're brave you can try a clean install as well.

Does anyone know how to prevent the GS43VR 7RE from automatically going to sleep/hibernation? I have changed the Windows settings under power and checked Dragon Center (using "Sport") - is there something that I am missing? I do not want it to ever sleep as I sometimes leave it on at home to prep for work trips (downloading games, etc.).

Go to "energy settings" in the control panel, look for advanced settings, change auto sleep to never.
Dragon center does not affect such settings.

Cpu core and cpu cache set to -158.2 seems to stable at that, blue screen at 170 after a few mins and crash after a couple of hours gaming at 165.

Intel gpu -66.4 havent really adjusted this to anything else.

System agent at -50 same as above just set this with no other adjustments.

I think with the heat heat from the hardware on these laptops they should come with software built in for undervolting, it makes a huge difference to temps/throttling/power usage.

Only thing i noticed with gaming was no throttling in gr wildlands anymore.
cpu temps seem to stay around the high 60's and low 70's and even lower in some other games like forza. I have also repasted which has helped but not as much as the undervolt.

Any word on coil whine on the GS43? Considering between this and an AW13 (and i guess maybe a used blade), I remember the 13r2 hsounding like it had a mechanical hard drive (it didn't) because of a really annoying clicking and hissing coil whine.

Hey guys recently i noticed Dragon Center isn't showing any temps or fan readings or anything for the GPU. I uninstalled it then installed the latest version from MSI, and when it was done, the "upgrade" box automatically popped up onscreen telling me a new version of Dragon Center was available even though I just installed the latest version from MSI's page and it upgraded itself again?? After reboot it still didn't show ANY readings for the GPU....zero (temps and fan speeds). Everything just says "N/A" for anything GPU related.

Any thoughts or help on this? CPU is showing the fan speeds and the temps as normal. All latest drivers from MSI's page, etc.

**Edit** I think this started the first time the "new Dragon Center Update" available box auto popped up on my screen and I clicked on upgrade and let it do its thing. Then I went in and checked it and noticed the "N/A" readings for anything GPU related.

So i think this issue started when i let Dragon Center upgrade itself. Like I said, even after uninstalling it, rebooting, then installing the newest version from MSI's page, then rebooting, the "new dragon center upgrade" box still pops up and still no GPU readings for fan/temps.

Mine isn't working either - on the newest version available from MSI's website. I never noticed that! Must be a bug and hopefully they'll fix it with the next revision.

After pulling out my hair trying to figure out why I was getting random FPS drops with the GPU downclocking for a few seconds at time while gaming, even in un-demanding games like Ori and the Blind Forest, and why I was seeing lower-than-99% GPU load in Unigine Valley, I went in and disabled Game Mode, Xbox DVR, and any other "gaming" setting I could find that Microsoft decided to force down our throats with the Creators Update. This seems to have helped--fewer FPS drops/downclocking events, and the GPU load is back up to 99%. Thanks for nothing, Microsoft!

Unfortunately, there still hasn't been a singular fix for this issue, just a bunch of potential fixes that work for different people. If you haven't already, be sure to check out this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...ers-or-mouse-pointer-freezes-try-this.798873/

And if you're going to buy a GS43VR, I'd definitely suggest putting in the extra few bucks and swapping out the stock Killer wireless card for an Intel wireless card. It's not guaranteed to fix the issue, but it's greatly helped many of us.

I thought this was long fixed with the before last Windows 10 update? Are you saying that even with the current Windows 10 there are still stuttering issues?

Someone tried Windows 7/8.1 (one or the other) and it stopped, then went back to Windows 10 when it was supposed to have been fixed by MS, and at first it was, then they came back and said it had started doing it again.

Maybe everyone out there that has a stable non-stuttering configuration can help you?

According to the folks over in this thread, some people had their stuttering totally resolved by the Windows 10 Creators Update, but others did not: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...-microstuttering-should-be-fixed-soon.802004/

Just in case anyone else is curious...this laptop's Thunderbolt 3 port *DOES* work with the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter for use with hard drives (don't think it will work for monitors, though). Just used it today to connect to a 8 drive RAID - and actually a mac formatted drive via Paragon HFS too!

No stuttering issues here. Love my GS43VR 7RE - I have owned it since April 28.

Could you tell me what settings you disabled to get the most out of your GPU?
I disabled Windows Game Recording and Broadcasting. What other settings you recommend?

Most important setting is to put the GPU under "Sport" mode. It seems to overclock it under these settings since "comfort" mode has very poor benchmarks with Unigine Heaven Benchmark 4.0. Took me a while to realize this and thought there was something wrong with my setup since got very poor results. Now works flawlessly, Love my GS43VR. Also, no more micro stuttering for me since the creators update and also fixed issues with killer lan nic by updating to latest drivers manually via inf.

Under Settings > Gaming > Game bar, I disabled "Record game clips, screenshots, and broadcast using the game bar"
Under Settings > Gaming > Game DVR, I disabled "Record in the background while you're playing a game"
Under Settings > Gaming > Game Mode, I disabled "Use Game Mode"

Yeah, Sport mode overclocks the GPU core +100mhz and the VRAM +200mhz, and it changes the computer's power plan to "High Performance." If you keep the Dragon Center, definitely best to game while in Sport mode, though you can achieve the same results by overclocking manually using MSI Afterburner and changing the power plan manually (if you ever plan on overclocking higher than the auto-overclock available in Sport mode, be sure to uninstall the Dragon Center, as it will conflict with the manual overclock).

Thanks for explaining that, figured it did something to the setttings since i was so frustrated with my setup under Comfort mode and decided to play with Afterburner only to realize Sport mode solved all my issues. Wish there was a disclaimer since that is the single most important thing to note with this laptop when using it for gaming.

    Cheers!

Hi! Do you know if a battery upgrade could be possible in this model? I could sacrifice HDD for a bigger battery. do you have links for bigger compatible batteries?

    Hey!
Anyone tried opening the gs43vr and changing cooling paste for themselfs yet?
Gonna open and change this week, as I've understood it will reduce temps quite nicely!

    emppill,

Let us know how it goes...I was going to do the exact same this next week with some Gelid Extreme on the CPU/GPU. I believe its as easy as popping open the back, unscrewing the fans first and then the screws around the CPU/GPU like you see on videos with it's bigger 1070/1080 brothers. But let me know how the temp differences are and your experience. What thermal compound are you going to use? I am also going to switch out the Killer card for an Intel 8265 while i am at it too :D

Yes, I've done it with Gelid Extreme and it lowered temps about 10C on both CPU and GPU! Well worth it!
