Why is the Core Max temperature reading of 85c in Red ink? Is it power throttling?DukeCLR likes this.

4.4 GHz possible but the temps reach 95C quickly within few seconds running a stress test. Max safe overclock is 4.2 GHz
Remember, the base clock of the CPU is 2.9 GHz so going to 4.4 GHz and above is like overclocking the CPU by 50%, not possible at all unless you want to cook your CPU in a few minutesLast edited: Feb 20, 2017 -

no, it's always been like that is just showing the max temps across any of the cores, 0 throttling

@Phoenix I'm getting a new laptop and I'm not sure if I should re-paste it with Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra 100% Metal Thermal Interface on CPU, IC Diamond on GPU...
Why did you go with IC Diamond on the CPU + GPU instead of Coollaboratory?
Asus G701VS-XS72K comes with 32GB of ram at 2800mhz...
Any ram I could add by myself later on for the MSI GT73VR?
What do you think about this ram? http://www.ebay.com/itm/G-SKILL-32G...468164?hash=item21178450c4:g:0d0AAOSwNRdX539f
Also, how did you get the kingston ram from HID?
Any tips on removing bloatware? Did you do a clean re-install of windows and then installed all drivers again?
I'm sorry for so many questions... I'm just worried since this is my first big purchase.
Shall I remove the 32GB clean windows install and select instead
Raid 0 512GB (2 x 256GB) HIDevolution Approved M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe SSD - installed by HIDevolution +$225.00
Do you know if the m.2 that HID will add is similar to the original 256gb that comes with msi...
Total would be: $2991
Any recommendation's?
My budget is $3009
Also, is Windows 10 Pro worth it? Shall I upgrade when I receive the laptop?
Best Regards,

You can go with LCU on the CPU + IC Diamond on the GPU.
The reason I went with IC Diamond on both is because I have had good luck with IC Diamond before. Also, the first laptop I got was bricked during my attempt to reflash the same BIOS. I had doubts why it was bricked, there was a small doubt in me that *maybe*, just maybe, CLU leaked onto the motherboard and fried it. So just to be on the safe side, I went with IC diamond on both
The max RAM speed supported on this MSI laptop is 2666 MHz. I went with 2400 MHz just to be safe as I didn't want any compatibility issues. Removing the RAM under the keyboard requires you to dismantle the entire motherboard to access them so I didn't wanna do that if I ran into any errors or stability issues.
Further, the Kingston RAM has lower CAS timings so the real world benefits of the faster 2666 MHz may not be worth it or noticeable if at all.
What do you mean how did I get the Kingston RAM from HIDevolution? The Kingston RAM is the stock RAM that comes with the laptop, I just ordered 64GB so they had to add 2 more sticks of RAM and that was that.
I ordered it with with a clean install, so no bloatware
The only thing to do after intalling all your drivers, uninstall MSI Remind which is basically just a reminder for you to register your laptop.
Do note, when you register your laptop, you get a prompt to complete a survey, if you complete the survey, MSI gives you 3 months more free warranty
Yes for gor RAID 0, this laptop has Super RAID 4 which is basically just another marketing name for RAID 0 but it's nice. Hadn't had a single issue with it. I RAIDed my 2x 2TB 960 PROs then setup the other SSDs as single drives
1 m.2 1TB 850 EVO (non NVMe)
1 2.5" 4TB 850 EVO
Please email [email protected] or [email protected] for that, I don't know as I had ordered all diff. SSDs than what comes stock
The laptop comes with Windows 10 Home by default, the Windows 10 Home product key is injected into your UEFI BIOS, so when you install Windows 10, it won't even ask you for a key as it will pickup the Windows 10 Home key right from the BIOS and install the respective edition as per the injected key in the BIOS, which is Windows 10 Home in this case.
You can upgrade the key from within Windows after installation which would be cheaper than buying an entire Windows 10 Pro key.
I highly recommend Windows 10 Pro as it gives you access to the Group Policy Editor which allows you to have full control of your OS:
allows you to fully disable Windows Defender, disable the stupid Homegroup which never works, allows you to disable the pop up window upon installing a new app which can handle a new extension........ oh man, the list is too big
when I format, I spend like 10 mins in the group policy editor to disable / tweaks lots of stuff
How to install Windows 10 Pro directly without having to install Windows 10 Home then upgrade if you had already upgraded and have your new Windows 10 Pro Key? simple, see:

@Phoenix Thanks for helping me with detailed information! I greatly appreciate your time spent writing this.
Should I upgrade ram to:
G.SKILL Ripjaws 32GB Dual Channel DDR4/2666MHz (2 x 16GB) - installed by HIDevolution +$210.00
Or shall I go with raid 0 (2x256GB) m.2 pcie gen 3.0?

If I give you 2 systems, one with 2400 MHz and one with 2666 MHz, let you use them for one week, I bet you cannot tell which system has which RAM. You won't be able to tell a difference other than in synthetic benchmarks.
Also note that the 2400 MHz has lower CAS latency, as the 2666 MHz has higher CAS latency so a bit lag.
I would go with the RAID 0 setup and stick to the stock RAM. Look t my sig, I have 64GB of the Kingston stock RAMhmscott likes this. -
Okay. I guess I will stick with the stock 16GB (2x8gb) of ram at 2400mhz. I will get the RAID 0 option 512GB (2 x 256GB) HIDevolution Approved M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe SSD - installed by HIDevolution +$225.00
I will have to say no to the clean install of Windows 10 since I'm short by $9

Ps. The 2666MHz sticks Alienware offer is more like 19-19-19-50

nothing?

The empty spot would house the 2nd GPU in an SLI GT73VR, in the non-SLI GT73's it's wasted space, with a big plastic block in the middle of it.
It's about the right size for another 2.5" device, if you could remove the plastic block, and find cabling for power and to split the SATA port to the other 2.5" device - or find another SATA connection.
I do wish MSI had configured a 2nd 2.5" space in the non-SLI GT73VR's, I don't think it would have taken a lot of extra cost.DukeCLR and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

I am really torn between that and the 15r3 with a 120hz panel or the 17r4 w 1440p 120hz panel! I just want atleast a 1070 so it will feel like a huge upgrade coming from a 980m. the new alienwares look really nice with the side strip lights.
edit: help me out. Could the seller be mistaken because i am looking at other reputable sellers e.g. xoticpc and they dont seem to have a configuration of a gt73 + 7700hq+1070. Or its possible that its just not listed on xotic.Last edited: Mar 17, 2017Donald@Paladin44 likes this. -

Hi Bro
1) The reseller only has 10 feedbacks with 83% positive rating
2) The reseller didn't even mention the full model number, ie. 7RF/ 6RF and the affix after the model number, look at my laptop, it says MSI GT73VR Titan Pro- 425 7RF
3) I strongly advice you avoid buying from eBay or Amazon no matter how tempting a deal may be, reason being, with a reputed reseller/system builder, you get their support as well. So let's say something goes wrong with your laptop, you contact MSI or Dell and get a not so great reply from them, you can then reach out to your reseller and they have direct contacts with the senior management of those companies to get you better support, let alone their own internal tech support. HIDevolution certainly has those contacts as I can tell you from me dealing with MSI support which was a joke, luckily, HIDevolution stepped in and then the seniors from MSI got me sorted
3) I love the Alienware 17R4's looks but do bear in mind that its cooling is inferior to the MSI in every way. I haven't seen one case in the MSI forums of anyone complaining about heat issues. The same does not hold to be true for Dell / Alienware. In fact, Dell now refuses any support case unless the CPU reaches 110C not even 100C which is stupid, because at 110C your CPU is fried like barbecued chicken my friend. So what they are saying essentially is, we will not honor any CPU overheating support requests. period. deal with it
4) I suggest you contact [email protected] or simply call HIDevolution and ask to speak to Donald, he is a great guy that will not oversell you thing and will adv ice you as to what is the best option for you and probably give you a small discount since you're an NBR member

I believe in that saying too but lately its weird. Micro center has an acer predator 17 w 1080 on it at 1999usd only and many can vouch that it is the real deal. About a year ago to before purchasing this 770dm i was about to pick up a gt72 over at ncix canada as it was around 150usd cheaper than the us sellers and they couldnt even price match it despite having "price match guaranteed" on their website. They just said that maybe they have different skus etc. Anyway thank you for your input! Hope i am not stealing all the attention on this thread lol

Thanks, my friend! Ill bear the things you mentioned in mind! Maybe ill just pick a 15r3 from the dell outlet so i could save alot lol. I was thinking of the gt62 but seeing that the gt73 is way better than its little bro, getting the gt62 would look so stupid lol. Any idea if the 15r3 or 17r4 has the 5ms response time on them 120hz panels? Oh how i wish i didnt get the 770dm and hold on to my cash for a year longer and got a gt73 a year later instead lol. Really hoping i could get me a nice deal on a gt73 though!

I know brother. However, some systems are worse than others. I've had Clevo, MSI, Lenovo, Dellienware and ++ in my house among others. But it was AWbook (socket model btw) who have had problems. I say happy, no thanks to everything from Azor's company. I continue with Clevo if they continue with socket hardware(I can fix flawed cooling by my self, if needed). So far so good. Or it will be homebuild desktop as before. Dellienware have created to much strange the last 5 years!! And it seems they continue as nothing have happened!! Or shall we say as usual?

Not true there are GT73VR's that come with i7 7700HQ , an example is the
MSI GT73VR 7RE-494CA. This particular version is sold by ncix and they probably offer another version as well sold via their US website. Another option on ebay is to consider a manufacture refurbished unit. Limited warranty and generally only good in the USA, but I can tell you from personal experience that the products from the 2 MSI resellers I have dealt with were as new no issues and worked perfectly fine.
I am awaiting the GT73VR 427 model and plan to use a pair of M.2;s in raid 0 for now until I decide which nvme pcie SSD to buy, I am leaning at a pair of the Adata XPG SX8000 in 256 size due to cost vs the Samsung 960's , i just cant see how the difference in speed between the 2 raid 0 arrays is going to be truly noticeable in everday use but the savings can be shuttled towards a larger 2.5 SSD and I can yank the 1TB and just store it -

Just about every brand of laptop has problems with thermal management unless extra steps are taken. The ODMs that build them and the peasants they have assembling them do not have to care about the OOBE. The OEMs should care, but their actions speak louder than their words.
Save for a few extremely rare, conscientious, and downright awesome, boutique vendors like HIDevolution and Obsidian-PC, one can expect to have to invest some time and extra money to straighten out some thermal messes when they purchase a new laptop.Last edited: Apr 10, 2017jaug1337, Donald@Paladin44, Papusan and 2 others like this. -

Yes, he can do that for a small donation. Contact him for the details.
What he can't do is the VBIOS since nVIDIA has a protection on the VBIOS which he hasn't cracked yet.
