Not exactly a review, just some pics and thoughts of my MSI GT75VR 7RF.

The laptop comes with the latest Windows 10 version:

Keyboard

Mechanical keyboard made by Steelseries. It is good to the touch and the wrist support is also nice. Only con for me is that the keyboard lighting can not be changed and it is flashing like a Christmas tree all the time. I can turn it off but what is the meaning of backlight keyboard if I turn it off ?
Screen

The screen is the same used in the GT73VR. Chi Mei CMN1747 120 Hz 5ms panel with G-Sync and 8-bit color depth.

I do not post gaming results because it is the same as the GT73VR.
Cooling
![]()
There are 2 differences inside which can catch people's attention.
1) MSI did not bother this time to paint the components, everything is in it's original color
2) there is an extra heatsink to cool some ICs on the motherboard to extend the GT75VR's lifespan
Maybe because of this extra heatsink, but GPU I had to run the GPU fan slightly higher (+5%) to get around the same results as I saw with the GT73VR.
Power consumption
Highest power drawn from the wall socket while playing Rise of the Tomb Raider:

As you can see there are some minor differences compared to the GT73VR, but the biggest is the mechanical keyboard. Not counting this we might say that the GT75VR is a slightly "patched" GT73VR 1.1 version. Does this worth the extra $$$ ? You decide.

That picture on the left is from the 1070 GT73VR (7RE) not the 1080 (7RF); The heatsink and VRM heatsink are different. I mentioned this in several other posts already. You need the other picture if you want the 1080 version. Notebookcheck incorrectly used the 1070 picture on the 1080 review, probably assuming they were identical.
Some bizarre stuff in the EC firmware that isn't in the 73's one:
clearly related to that ESS Sabre Stuff, but why? How?

No extra heatsink there either.Falkentyne likes this. -
You can change the RGB keyboard to whatever color you want. They don't need to be flashing all of the time.

LOL. I couldn't imagine if the "disco" setting was the only back light available. Haha

Found it, thanks !

To no surprise this panel also has the same manufacture detect that all other Chi Mei CMN1747 panels have.

Yeah what defect is that? @DRevan
And this supposed to be a "3ms" screen. Is that a complete lie? Or is it some overdrive trickery in the Bios ? -
By "all" I mean the ones I encountered (11 panels in total).
They all had it at a different spot, but the issue was the same, at certain view angles there was a green dot lighting up under black background.
At some cases it was hard to spot and most people would not even spot it, but at some cases it was easy to see it and it was annoying.
My laptop was from Germany and after checking the German website of MSI the reason is now clear why did I and Notebookcheck receive a model with 5 MS screen. In Germany MSI sells this laptop with 2 types of 120 hz screen, the 5ms Chi Mei Panel and the unknown New 3 ms panel.
In the US according to the MSI website all models are equiped with 3 ms panel only.
Would be nice to check this and see the actual name and model of the panel. -

Yes, the
Don't know about the manufacturer date...but again, I am only dealing with the US market source.
Edit: Check your revision...Rev. C2 is 5ms, C3 is 3msLast edited: Sep 1, 2017hmscott likes this. -

Hopefully the same trick with the EC window with RW Everything will work on the GT75VR.

please explain to me on how to test the HDR and I'll be more than happy to. Running 4k HDR content on youtube on the GT75 and my old GT80 looks fairly similar. The colors are more vibrant on the GT75, but there isn't a huge change.
-
Try Netflix, they have some HDR Content. Both the 75VR and the GT80 is the same TN panel so if the 75VR is more vibrant then that is probably the effect of HDR enabled.
-
For my GT75VR, it says HDR not supported. On close inspection, MSI is not really providing an HDR display on their laptops but a display which is as vibrant as an HDR one. This can even be checked on the MSI site as it does not explicitly mention anywhere that it's display is HDR
