I have not yet, as I figure it's a question outside of their support domain. When you attempted the dual boot, did it seemingly quit reading from the USB drive?

I realize this is off topic but I thought I'd reply to your thread because I'm such a borderlands fan :) ... Can anyone speak on any updates to the trackpad issues maybe with any new drivers that have come down? I'm a perspective buyer but this common negative we're hearing scares me because I would use this laptop probably more like a traditional macbook or pc... NOT PRIMARILY for gaming.. I just like having the most horsepower in my computers and this seems to have drawn my attention over the upcoming Sammy Ativ book 9 plus... I know the gs70 is meant for gaming, but does fan noise and mouse pad issues ruin the casual work/entertainment experience for this laptop? (I have no interest in plugging in an external mouse if the trackpad is as bad as some have reported. Thanks in advance!

I will tell you Monday when I get mine. New drivers are up. I doubt this is a hardware issue since the Élan drivers and hardware have proven even with Samsung to ultimately work well.

Yes, I owned a MacBook Pro ( 2009) so I know what a good touchpad can do.

Don't forget.... Bluetooth portable mice are great

What's everybody?! So hey I thought you guys might be interested. I got my GS 70 and first thing voided the warranty and tossed in a Crucial M500 960GB SSD. I hate to say but only a couple things that can be accessed when you pull the back off. You have 2 mSATA slots, a 2.5 9mm SATA drive and the wireless card. Attached are some pics for reference.

I must say this laptop is beautifully put together on the inside. It looks like time and care was taken during assembly.

    Pics are large

I hope that this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Virtualchappy. Could you please tell us, if you found anything to be tricky when taking off the back plate? Is it "just" uncrewing the total of 19 screws on the back (1 hidden behind the "Warranty sticker, void if tampered")? Also does anyone have a link to some official EU/US law ruling on the legitimacy of this sticker? I've read multiple times on various forums, that at least in EU, manufacturers are not allowed to void warranty unless you've caused physical damage to the unit.

I've updated the first post with various goodies from some posts in this thread.

For those of you interested in trying to re-paste your CPU & GPU MSI has posted the assembly and disassembly guides. I'm guessing this is the same guides Xotic PC and Gentech PC use to do their upgrades. You have to register for their forums to see the file otherwise it just says "Here it is". I haven't re-pasted mine yet but I plan on it now that I have this and will report the Thermal changes.

Mine will be here Wednesday. Jumped in on the great deal from newegg and Steelseries Siberia V2 headphones).

How is the brightness at 25% and 50% under mild lighting? I would think that screen must be a main source of battery when doing office work/browsing etc.

I got an RMA from MSI and sent mine back for them to repaste. I was hitting 100 C when I ran Prime 95 and Uniigine Heaven benchmarks for 20 mins or so, and it throttled pretty significantly. Hopefully I will get it back this week and let you know if they were able to fix it.

Hey guys. So I'm in love with this laptop, and I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on it. I'm a full time linux user, and I was just wondering if anyone has thrown linux on one yet and run into any trouble. I guess the main things I'm concerned with is sound, and the keyboard back lighting. Just want to make sure the back lighting works within linux. I don't need anything fancy for backlighting. One color is just fine for me.

I primarily run Xubuntu right now, but I'm planning on dabbling with Manjaro with the new rig. So, hopefully someone here is running linux without issue. Then I imagine I'll be ordering one of these beauty's this week! :D

has anyone gotten this laptop from Gentech or Xoticpc yet? I'm curious what the IC diamond repast runs at temp wise. I have one but got it from new egg, my temps are within what they say is normal but I'm with everyone else, I want a quieter fan and cooler temps if possible.

Just got mine and opened it up, wondering if anyone else if having trouble with the right click not working and also really 'bouncy' keys on the right side of the main keyboard? About 10 keys each bounce at the press of one of them and it's getting annoying...

Hi Owners! I notice that the FAN inlets are above the keyboard. Can someone comment about fan issues if the laptop lid is closed? For example, if I have the laptop hooked to external monitor and keyboard, but with the lid closed, will there be a problem with cooling?

Ok help me decide: I have both of them seeled from newegg (long story)

    1. $1899 for the 256 (raid0) and 1tb 5400
    2. $1670 for 128/750 7200rpm
    Free backpack
Free steelSeries Serbia v2 in red

Planning to use sSD for office 2013, skydrive, programs. Hard drive for steam, pics, music iTunes

Basically is the raid0 worth it for $230 and loosing the headset?

Yeah, I wouldn't be dual booting. Windows 8 won't even be loaded up once. The first time I turn the laptop on, a USB with a linux distro will be plugged in and installed. Windows 8 is worthless to me.

Why are people having issues with dual booting though? I've seen other threads with people complaining of the same thing. Anyone know the cause?

I tried booting off a USB drive with Ubuntu and Manjaro on it and I can't get it to boot from it. It boots in UEFI mode, but when I try to select "Try without installing," it quits reading from the USB drive and just kinda hangs forever.

I assume your looking to keep your Win8 install? I'd be curious what happens if you just chose to install, rather then "try" the OS. Seems like a strange situation though. I would think dual booting should be easy.

    Hi guys,
I'm having an issue about the track-pad. I got the laptop today and when I boot it it worked fine but once I logged onto my pc account then the track-pad stopped working, I tried fixing it by disabled it and enabled it manually but nothing worked. Does anyone have the same issue as-well ? Fortunately I do have a mouse :D but I just want my NEW laptop to work perfectly.

It is only a wild guess, but what you describe sounds somewhat familiar to me.

Maybe you disabled the touchpad by accident. Look out for an Fn combo that disables/enables the touchpad.

Plugging in your usb mouse will disable the trackpad. If you go into the elan pointing device>property of touch-pad>ELAN>uncheck "disable when external USB pointing device plug in"

    Also FN+F3 should work

    Updating the drivers:

Someone mentioned an msi document stating which of the updated drivers need to be uninstalled before upgrading. Anyone know if this exists or which drivers need to be uninstalled before updating? I definitely want to upgrade the trackpad at least (already updated the GeForce)

As my first gaming laptop. Any "must have" software I should look into getting for temp control, or system maintenance. Ect.?

I'm torn between getting this GS70 or some other notebook with a more battery friendly CPU like the i7-4702mq. Based on various accounts, the GS70 on battery lasts roughly 3-4 hrs during casual use.

I haven't seen anyone in the forums mention about playing with the processor state in Windows advanced power settings. I'm wondering if setting maximum processor state at 0% will make a big difference in battery life.

The 0% setting fixes the clock speed to the minimum speed for the processor, which I guess is 2400 MHz for the 4700mq. This change in speed should not be noticeable whatsoever during casual use (browsing, light Office work) with a powerful processor like the one in the GS70.

It's possible this setting will not make a huge difference, because technically the CPU should automatically throttle down during casual usage anyway. I don't have a modern CPU to test this out so would appreciate if someone could test this on their GS70. You have to set both the minimum and maximum processor state to 0% on battery.

Of course, power settings. Where you dictate the plan, change it so that the closing the lid action doesn't put the computer to sleep (I've been doing this for ages with all my laptops) so that you can keep it running without having the screen on. It's just a workaround, but I don't know of any other way.

i have just ONE question ...................how is the screen.

i really would like a full review of the gs70 screen (notebookcheck style)...........i read its OK, but for £1700 you should get a very good TN screen with awesome colours and blackness.

    anyone ????

ps....i read here, there is quite many people having issues (from day one) with keyboard and touchpad ???? that sounds not very fun....this is a no cheap laptop after all.

in the past, i always Hated msi laptops for there cheap/ugly/plastic casings & touchpads.........i really hope GS70 sets a new standard for msi.

I have not calibrated teh screen yet. At 33% brightness (more than enough to watch a movie in dimmly lit room) one can resolve the full grey scale pattern from test BD discs.

Contrast out of the box was a bit high so it crushed the white. Fixed that in the nvidia settings.

Need to check color this weekend. Quick look (yes, I really do care alot about screens and own a Sharp Elite 70" TV, calibrated) shows little banding on blu-ray content (Universal studios intro is a good one) and colors look decent pre-calibration.

Ubuntu runs horrible inside of VirtualBox (dunno about other VM solutions) because of fancy GUI that require hardware acceleration. Try xubuntu or lubuntu.

Is anyone having trouble with the backlighting not saving the settings? I originally set it as red, but now I want to change it to green. However, as soon as I restart, it reverts back to red. Does anyone have any idea why this happens? I uninstalled some preinstalled programs, and ran CCleaner once, but I don't think that should affect the lighting?

    hello
please dont consider my opinion as a troll, i've tested the computer
I purchased online a GS70 for browsing, office, casual playing but with performance
I was looking for something light if possible, regarding that "light" and "gaming" don't fit together

After testing it, i've sent it back to the shop and purchased a GT60 that I already know (my son have one)
This is what I dislike :
The size : it's really large, larger than I espected, but this is my fault not to have considered it before
The noise : yes it's really noisy, the CPU fan NEVER stop and the computer is unpleasant to use. I tryed to lower the CPU voltage to decrease temp (40 degres at idle) but the GS70 was still too noisy. As a comparison the gt60 I actually use now don't emit ANY noise
The keyboard : nice keys, but the backlingting is no homogenous, and ligh is coming more from the space between frame and keys than from the key it self (the gt60 is MUCH better). I didn't like at all the font used for the keyboard...not easy to read. Its acceptable for a game dedicated external keyboard but not for a computer you might use in a professional environment.
The screen : what a deception ! the mate display is a good idea, but the screen is terribly GRAINY as hell, pictures fell like watched behind unpolished-glass. The GT60 display is mate but much better
The trackpad : overall it was the factor key of my returning decision. using it is a nightmare, even with the last drivers and fine tunig. unresponsive, some times no response at all, bad felling under finger, some steps, unpleasant integreted clic...yuk the synaptics of the gt60 is MUCH better, even smaller

    What I will regret :
The weight is 1kg less on the GS70 than GT60. An power brick is smaller also
The casing/body : more high end in the GS70, the GT60 looks plastic and the keyboard area is too flexible. Overall the casing of gs70 ib nice but don't expect too much it's still far from very high end casings like macbook pro retina

This is my humble opinion, some might LOVE the GS70. I just wanted to point that it has many drawbacks, and it's a shame because it could have been a winner
It was my last post as a GS70 owner, because I'm not one, anymore :)
