Did Win 7 work on your machine?

    I've got teh GS60 2QE 008UK Ghost Pro 3k (970m). Planning to "downgrade" from the (unusable) win 8.1 to win 7 x64.
    Did yours work?
Did you flash the bios to a win 7 version?
    WHere did you find drivers?

    Cheers if you can help.

Has anyone looked in their sound settings to find the "subwoofer"? Any way to adjust that volume in any way?

Can someone please do a vbios dump of the 6GB 970m MSI VBIOS for me please? I have a Clevo 970m 6GB card inbound and want to flash it with MSI vbios if necessary. Thanks.

Just wanted to confirm that's the gs60 with the 1080p screen is IPS like last years model right?

    Thanks.

Looking to sell my G550JK and trade up to this beauty for tons more power. But don't want to give up the IPS screen as I do photo editing on it. Not professional grade but enough where TN won't cut it.

The screen looks the same as last years model and I remember it was Samsung.

The only GS60 uses ChiMei panels are the GTX850M SKUs.

    remind me again tomorrow. :)

Thank God for the 9xx series, It's the first high-end mobile GPU with great performance and does run cool.

@gentechpc, thanks for the answer, awesome!

Can anyone with the gs60 comment on its speakers and sound? Perhaps even in comparison to the g550jk(including its external sub).

    Thanks.

Sound isn't too bad. It's not as good as my old Retina Macbook Pro, but it's better than my Surface Pro 3. Not really sure how I could compare it to the G550JK. It doesn't have any subs, but it's got 4 speakers which I find does a better job than simply having 2.

I once had a Clevo P157 and even though it had a sub woofer it didn't really do much for me. The GS60 is pretty good for sound in a pinch.

I only wish there were some way to control the fans at idle. It seems like they're always on for the CPU.

Pretty soon we will be getting the mod for that too.
There's one fan profile which was largely used by 870m version owners. I came to know of it when I followed the 870m version thread.

That version wouldn't happen to work with the 970M version, or are there too many differences for it to work properly?

TBH, I can't say about that. The changing of fan profile was done by flashing the EC with Svets tool. I can not say how much of the older version is similar to the newer GS60 and whether it will work or not. Because the custom EC firmware was actually made for the 860m version and they said it can be used on 870m too as they all have same bios/firmware. So I think the Gentech guys can answer your question well.

They are too different to be interchangeable. One difference is the gpu fan is always on, where as the 860/70 version allows it to be turned off. There are other differences Sentinel was unable to identify too. I posted an updated fan profile for the 970m a few pages back. It lowers the minimum cpu fan speed by 250 rpm which certainly helps. When you turn on green mode with that, you barely hear the fans. Unfortunately, there's no way to turn off the fans with this profile version as msi apparently made a minimum cap. The same goes with the new versions for the 800 series.

Looking at potentially getting this laptop. There is a review on the Amazon page for the 4k version of this laptop indicating that the screen is only 48 Hz instead of 60 Hz. Does anybody have the 4k version of GS60? Can you confirm if the screen is only 48 Hz? Does the 3k version of this have the same issue?

    Thanks,

Could I trouble someone to snap a picture of the FHD screen with a dark/black background? I'm coming up on the return window limit and want to gauge if the light bleed I see on mine is excessive or the norm.

I love everything else about this laptop and think I got a gem heat wise as my temps max out at 76C, but I just have trouble getting over the light bleed in dark scenes

Just bought an FHD GS60. Downloading 3Dmark for some temp tests.

So far I'm not impressed with the fan noise at idle. That cpu fan is loud, something like 2900 rpm. With any little bit of cpu usage it ramps up fast and sounds like a tornado. Wonder if this is normal or I have a rather bad paste job?

My old GS70 was never this bad for fan noise.

Also I have a dead pixel right in the middle. Which bothers me quite a bit due to tons of document editing and reading. Anyway I know this can happen to any display so I won't fault the notebook. But I'm already leaning towards returning it.

Well no worries, you can change it. The problem with getting from such stores is that you don't get a fully tested unit. It's just what they get in the box, they forward it to you.
Do share your results too. :)

Two things I learned in the past couple days: First, if you switch to Green mode in the Dragon gaming center, it disables turbo boost and cuts down on the fan oscillations very significantly. Another thing comes from an Asus article I read the other day: Asus says 100% CPU utilization is required for smooth scrolling on laptops | Apps and Software | Geek.com
So according to the article, simply using the trackpad uses a lot of CPU usage? Very interesting.

    Just an FYI,

XoticPC just got their MSI shipment in yesterday and got their stock into the system this morning. They now really do have the 6GB VRAM on hand and are shipping orders. They are also running a Black Friday promotion for a free mouse pad, shirt, lanyard, 32GB USB, and 2 MSI goodies (backpack, plushie, mouse, mouse pad, keyboard skin). I had them modify my order so that I could take advantage of their Black Friday offerings; the free MSI backpack + mouse is too tempting.

Bah, still no 3K screen with 6 GB VRAM SKU anywhere in sight :(.

And now we know 4K screen is just the same lesser screen that Lenovo Y50 got (48 Hz RGBW version), so even that 4K 6 GB VRAM SKU is flawed. If you want 6 GB VRAM, FHD models are only non-silly option.

GenTech gentlemen, could you please give us at least a hint if any SKUs with 3K screens and 6 GB VRAM may pop-up and when?

There is no such SKU with 3K and 6GB VRAM. Only FHD and 4K has 6GB VRAM:

    GS60 Ghost Pro-064 FHD

    GS60 Ghost Pro 4K-079

Also we just got the 4K in and here are some bencmarks, temps with IC Diamond and screen:

Hi, I hope to place an order for MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 4K-079 sometime next week. I have a few concerns regarding 4k display panel. I understand it's limited to 48hz for 4k resolution but it's not a huge deal breaker. I'm more worried about its color accurate and brightness because Retina Macbook Pro display panel had great brightness and color accurate. If you downscale it to 1080p on 4k, how does it look? Is it a perfect 2^2 pixel (if that makes sense) I would go for FullHD panel but I prefer glossy over matte. I read that GentechPC will do several testing before shipping? That might help ease my concerns since I have some bad experiences with laptop vendors in the past.

    Thanks! :D

So I ended up returning my GS60 FHD.

During gameplay and benchmarks, the fans became so loud and abnxious I couldn't hear sound from speakers. Not exaggerating.

Good news is temps never passed 75 for both CPU and GPU. But for the fan noise I would hope so. Anyway I work in mainly quiet areas so the fan noise is a deal breaker. As well as the dead pixel. When I changed performance profiles, the fans were more bareable but barely. Still not acceptable to me. But I am picky with noise and some of you may not mind it. Still a fantastic laptop well built.

My screen was uniform no backlight bleed and the IPS panel is gorgeous. Not as good as my G550's but good.

Also another point to address. The bottom of the notebook becomes super hot and unbearable to the touch. Even with adequate space under. May not be an issue to those of you who just use it on a table but on your lap, good luck!

Anyway, I guess my G550 will do for now. Thought idnfinally found a thin 15 inch beast with no compromises.

Thanks. So that should help with answering the question about the effect of screen resolution on temperature. We also have your data for 3K screen 3 GB VRAM model after IC Diamond repasting, so finally two tests that vary just a single variable :).

3K 3 GB VRAM IC Diamond: firestrike 6,562 points (7,470 points graphics), max CPU 70 C, max GPU 67 C
4K 3 GB VRAM IC Diamond: firestrike 6,514 points (7,418 points graphics), max CPU 80 C, max GPU 67 C

So no difference in GPU temperatures but 10 C difference in CPU temperatures. Interesting.

Also notable are those 3dmark temperature graphs (at the right side of screenshot): green line is CPU temperature. It seems with 4K screen vs 3K it's not so much just peak that would be higher, but entire baseline is shifted up. CPU is hotter even when it's not doing that much.

That would seem to confirm my theory it's actually iGPU display driving parts HW that contribute to extra heat with higher-DPI screens:

Their supplier got some complications and so they get the notebooks probably on the 14th.
Oh man, they already changed it from 26th october to 6th November and now again 1 week...

So I just received the Ghost Pro 4K-079 today. Before I opened it, I was reading the spec sticker and it says "VGA: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M / 3GB GDDR5" when it's supposed to be 6GB. The spec sticker does correctly show that it is the Ghost Pro 4K-079 model. I know that sometimes, manufacturers will misprint the spec labels, and the vendor I ordered it from agreed with that. So I booted it up and checked the NVIDIA Control Panel, which also read 3072MB. My vendor is checking with MSI now to determine exactly what is going on, but I just wanted to post here so others that have ordered or are thinking of ordering the 4K-079 model will be aware of this.

Just got a email from MSI :

"GS60 Ghost Pro 4K-079 has 3GB of VRAM! NOT 6GB as spec says."

It was typo on their end. contact your reseller if you want to exchange or return the unit.

So what's the point of the 079? 080 has the same specs or...? Surely a 6GB 4K would be a good to have as 4K can utilize over 3GB of VRAM.

Why would they have two sku's 079 & 080 BOTH with 3G. The only difference being an additional 128 ssd
and the price is $200 more?

Looking at the GS70 with the GTX 870M GPU, 128GB storage and 3GB GDDR5 is 1799.99 MSRP. The next model is 2x128GB storage and 6GB GDDR5 for 2099.99 MSRP. Then there's 3x128GB storage and 6GB GDDR5 for 2199.99 MSRP.

    So that's $300 to upgrade from 3GB GDDR5 and add an extra 128GB SSD. Then $100 more for a 3rd 128GB SSD.

Being a $200 difference between the GS60 4K-079 and 4K-080 makes no sense. If it was $100 difference, then adding the extra M.2 SSD would be justifiable.

I also just received an email from an MSI tech stating that both models have the GTX 970M 3GB, not 6GB. So if you're looking for a GTX 970M with 6GB GDDR5, the only options are the GS60 Ghost Pro-64 and GS60 Ghost Pro-64 (both with FHD displays).

The GS60 Ghost Pro 4K-079 was just updated on MSI.com to reflect that it does have the 3GB GTX 970M.

US MSI still lists also 4K screen gold chassis one as having 6 GB VRAM - GS60 Ghost Pro 4K-078:
