    Usb can output a diaplay

I noticed the other day that the workstation version of the gs60 has thunderbolt. Has anyone tested whether or not the gs60 is?

The hardware can support it but unfortunately there are not enough ports to do so. The GT72 series do have an HDMI out and 2x mDP ports so it can. Since there is just 1x mDP on the GS60 you can only do 2 externals.

So misleading. Didn't know if they had some fancy displayport --> 2x hdmi / dvi adapter that did this. I know USB is an option (I use a USB 3.0 dock to output to 4 displays from a surface pro 3) but there is a clear difference is functionality between native display outputs and USB adapters. Shame on MSI's website.

I'm loving my Ghost, but I'm starting to have problems with the wireless. I'm getting fat latency/lag spikes while playing WoW. Not sure why, I have an Asus router set up properly and don't have the problem playing on my desktop (also wifi). I got the Killer card upgrade hoping to not have to worry about wifi problems, but it looks like I need something tweaked.

But i set up that only the iGPU should be used using the Nvidia Control Panel.
For some reason it always seems to use the 970m

Using an mst adapter on the displayport you can connect 3x 1080p 60hz displays. You can use the hdmi and internal too.

Hello :hi2: I'm new to the forums, well I have lurked for a while lol, but finally decided to get the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro GTX 970M ( MSI GS60 2QE Ghost Pro-064 15.6" Laptop Computer - Aluminum Black GS60 GHOST PRO- - Micro Center)

So far the computer is a beast and I'm loving the form factor. The keyboard besides some wonkiness in the layout is hands down the best keyboard I have ever used!

My one concern is the high temperature readings through the Dragon Gaming Center. Just browsing the internet and doing nothing else yields CPU temperatures well over 100 degrees F. I am on a sold surface but not sure if I need to flash an update BIOS. I have already updated the graphics drivers.

I did some GW2 gaming yesterday and the game looked wonderful, but man it sounded like an airplane was going to take off in by apartment lol. I don't really mind the noise but it was noticeably loud. The CPU and GPU were showing temps of 100+ degree F.

Maybe its just a bad reading because even with the unit reading 100 degrees F, the unit is not hot, it's warm at best (when doing simple task, like browsing the internet). When I was gaming it did get a bit hot, but I thought was normal and just logged off the game for a while.

I do not want to take the unit back is there's troubleshooting I can do first.

Also, is there a getting started tutorial or how to optimize your pc for this new model?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

100 degrees F is only around 42 degrees C, so that's only around half of what it's build for. No worries atvall

    Hi guys,

Finally yesterday I got my GS60 2QE the 3k 970m version. Will write you a short review a few days later.

But for now I have a big a problem with it. It seems that I have a faulty headphone jack. When I fully plug in a headphone only one side makes sound. I tried 2 different headphone both had the same problem (Both of them works perfectly on every other device). Than I realized if i just plug in the headphone halfway than it works both sides makes sound. Does anyone has any suggestion for this issue? Or just contact msi support?

3k and 1080p gaming League of Legends,
I played some League of Legends in 3k yesterday. All settings were on maximum and the game run perfectly. I had around 130 fps. But the cursor was really small. I often lost track of it (which means your dead if you can't click on the right targets). If I find a way to make it larger i guess it will be ok. But some text still seemed large I think because of windows 150% setting.

And the real problem came when I switched the ingame resolution to 1080p. Text and menus were huge, totally off the scale. Again I think because of the windows setting. But than I could only play 1080p game when I turn off the windows larger text and other elements stuff?
How are you dealing with this?
I haven't tried any other games just League of Legends but that's the one I play the most.

Chances are you have your windows and text scaled to 200%. So when you switch to 1080p, text and icons will look a lot larger than normal. If you're going to switch resolutions for the long term, you can switch it to something like 125 or 150%. Otherwise there's not much you can do unless you can find a 3rd party app that will automatically switch scaling when you switch resolutions.

I've never seen your issue at all. Might just be a LoL thing.

Hello all; I've had my GS60 Ghost Pro 064 model for almost a month now and it's been a joy. My BIOS version (that it shipped with) is E16H5IMS.106 dated 9/25/14. I just notices that the most current BIOS in the downloads section of the MSI website is E16H5IMS.10B and dated 11/14/14. Are there any "change notices" available for this update and has anyone already flashed and noticed any changes? Thanks for any comment.

Change logs are never available, it's most likely available to internal use only.
Those BIOS/EC are compatible with your system therefore you can flash those without any issues.

mDP 1.2 if I am not mistaken supports daisy chaining monitors... so maybe that way it would also work. Not sure if that would give you access to the full potential of the Nvidia card which still would miss one connection, but maybe that works?

    Hello everyone,

First of all, thanks all for this thread it really helped throughout the laptop jungle to choose the model matching exactly my expectations !
Soooo, I am soon to be the owner of the MSI's GS60 Ghost Pro 040XFR, meaning the 15.6i model, 8GB RAM, with Freedos, and the Nvidia GTX970m 3GB. Now I've got a couple of questions :

I contacted a cool website which agreed to custom build a wooden cover (yes I am not very fond of the dragon shield, and I've seen a couple of fingerprints on presentation videos ;) ), but my laptop isn't gonna be in my hand before Chistmas. Yet, they need the exact dimensions of the screen case to build it, including the dragon shield's, the embossed design's, and the corner's, so the wooden case fits correctly ! Could someone provide them? I can only find the global dimensions of the whole case...

If you also are interested, here's the link : Macbook Pro Retina 15" Walnut Backcover - Woodsoul (and they are also willing not to display the girly deer ^^ ), I directly contacted them, and they are very responsive !

Additionaly, does someone have a tutorial somewhere, to install windows + drivers without any dvd? I know I would use a USB key for Win8.1, but still, I don't know how it works, and I don't know how and when to install the drivers, what are the different steps, and it would definitely be assuring to have some kind of a video including all the necessary steps !

    Thank you all, cheers !

    Klixt

Agreed. That is if your display does not support the mDP out - cause then the displays would do the "hubbing". Have you tried this or similar?

Nope, it's not a sticker, it requires good sizing especially because you need to "clip" it on the case, it is curved on the borders to allow the attachment.

How did you get that for $1899? It's showing as $2099 on newegg for me from your link? The only one I can find for $1899 is the -064 variant (with just a 128GB SSD instead of the 256gb (2x 128GB SSD):

That's going to be tough to clip onto the bottom considering how the lid opens. Also, the lid has rubber pads that might interfere with any clips. I would seriously consider sending them the machine over giving them dimensions(assuming you trust them). I can't imagine them being able to make something functional on the first try with dimensions alone.

Yeah actually, that's what they proposed first, but the thing is it would take like 5 labor days, plus expedition, which is not so bad, even reassuring, but I don't have this time unfortunately. But I guess I see the point, dimensions aren't enough. Well I guess I'll have to pass on it, and keep the dragon visible !

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum, and have finally decided to go for the GS60 Ghost Pro 064 model, the one with 1080p screen and 6GB VRAM. I am based in the USA. What would be the best way to go about ordering this system? I can see multiple options such as XoticPC/GentechPC/Excalibur/HIDevolution, etc. or Amazon or Newegg. All of them have it for 1899$, though Xotic and Gentech have a 3% cashback ootion if I pay via Check, Money Order, Cashiers Check or Bank Wire Transfer. So which way would be the best way to go when it comes to after sales support and warranty? I am considering the aftermarket IC Diamond repaste, so I guess Xotic or Gentech is the way to go. Any inputs or experiences? Thank you!

P.S. The other laptop I had under consideration was the Gigabyte P35W v3 CF2, that is 100$ cheaper (at 1799$) but has only 8GB RAM and 3GB VRAM. The optional ODD swappable bay and 5.5+ hour battery life are plusses over the GS60's 3 hour battery life, but the weight, slightly worse build quality and troublesome Intel AC7260 wireless card are minuses. Moreover, I dont think its quite available yet and hence have hardly seen any reviews of it, and the people in the P35X forum have been having a ton of issues related to CPU throttling and BIOS crashes, amongst many other issues. 3 people have even returned it. That's why I'm choosing the GS60 over it. Hope I'm making the right choice!! What do u guys think?

    Guys,

I cannot seem to get the two finger scroll to work on my touchpad, I have uninstalled drivers and redownloaded the latest and still no two finger scroll? Also I hate how its so slow to move the cursor.

I know there is multiple threads on how many dislike the touchpad, can someone maybe tell me a different driver that will work or may be better?

    Thanks! And Happy Thanksgiving!

1 week? you are better off buying from newegg or amazon and choosing the fastest delivery. xoticpc takes some time to procure the hardware and modify if you choose.

I ordered a GS70-099 from HIDEVOLUTION.com last Weds night, shipped it out the next day and I received it on that Fri. All I did was talk to Ted and made sure they had the laptop I wanted in stock, choose rush delivery for $50 and next day (with Sat delivery).

Very impressed and got it very quickly.

Amazon is a good option but if you want to get the TIM repasted then consider HIDEVOLUTION.COM.

    Hi all,

I received my -046 SKU on Wednesday and have had a few days to play around with it. Here are my impressions to contribute as I have gotten so much out of this thread. Thanks everyone.

Basically this is an excellent looking laptop with a great profile and does not have too much of an aggressive styling. I wish I could at least turn off the LCD backlight logo but that is fine overall. I've been wanting to get a gaming laptop again after a few years without, and I've tried a few, and this one is just hands down exactly what I was looking for - light form factor, glossy non-TN display (not easy to find), solid gpu. I'm very pleased overall with my purchase.

Sound is surprisingly decent and I have no complaints at all about the built in speakers. My desktop machine is very decked out on audio and I'm very fussy, so that's saying something I suppose. Of course one can only expect so much from a laptop. It is not quite as strong as the GT72 which reminds me of my high school boombox in the in 1980s (I mean that in a good way!) but I don't see how it could be improved w/this form factor.

Fan is always on. It is not terribly audible in regular use but you can hear it rev up during gaming. It is certainly noticeable but it is a constant sound and fades to white noise so it doesn't bother me too much. I could see how some people might have an issue though if they are sensitive to it.

For gaming I did a 5 hour session on thanksgiving since its pretty much a slacker day around the house for us. the laptop got warm on the bottom but never on top and I wasn't aware at all of the heat until at one point I lifted it up to check. It was gaming-laptop-hot but certainly not an alarming temperature - I was pretty impressed. Also after the 5 hour session I did not have any finger fatigue - so the keyboard at least for me works pretty well on the ergonomics.

Input placements could be a little more convenient - it would be nice to have monitor outs and Ethernet on the left side, but I don't know if it was a capricious choice by MSI design or a necessity due to the small form factor.

Wireless performance is quite excellent. No drop outs and on my parents internet I cannot distinguish wired vs wireless latency or packet loss.

The display is gorgeous and pretty much everything I could ask for EXCEPT for one thing which may cause me to try an exchange. First, though, mine arrived w/no dead stuck pixels and it is stunning. I received it at work and once I downloaded some 3k wall papers from interfacelift I had a number of "ohs" and "ahs" from co workers. Windows is set up well and there are no font issues w/the OS for the most part. The 970m works quite well and I've been playing some older games like WOW and SWTOR and it can run them at 3K on max settings no problem. I won't be able to test more demanding games until after the holiday. I was really worried how the 970m would handle 3k but so far I am really impressed. PROBLEM: it is too bad that my unit like I see many others suffers from pretty bad backlight bleed. On my unit the BLB is on all quadrants of the screen but most pronounced on the top two corners. The left is particularly bad and in my opinion is defective. It pushes down at least an inch from the top and really ruins some games and any movie watching with letterboxes. I've been trying to adjust and get over it but so far mixed feelings yet. I got mine through Amazon and will buy another one - if the second unit is improved I will keep that and return as defective. If it is just as bad as this one or worse I will perhaps send them both back as defective and wait it out a bit. It is too bad that MSI produced such a quality notebook and used the wonderful Panasonic panel but fubared it with shoddy work on the assembly. Most of the BLB looks to be just improper bezel assembly. I see someone else did a tear down and repair but i'm not going there. Again on displays I am extremely fussy and all my home desktops are high end calibrated photography/video editing class monitors, so perhaps I over-react, but I see this BLB as an issue in this and other threads.

My only other nit is eventually I would like to put in a second m.2 SSD RAID0 for 256gb. That's fine but will require a full rebuild which is annoying - they should have just sold the unit with RAID0 like that. But it is a minor gripe. I'm fine with the spinning TB drive but will eventually replace it with a TB ssd.

I don't want to install too much stuff on it yet in case I send it back, but if any questions am happy to try and answer. I see on Amazon these sku's are selling very quickly and watched from the beginning of this week many prime/fulfilled by amazon vendors with stock to only a few. If there is one left I will probably try to replace it with a second screen on a Monday order next week. By wed/thu I'll have the second model (assuming stock exists) and am curious to compare BLB on the models.

    Thanks

PS last week I tested the GT72 and sent it back. Amazon's return policy is until January 31 at the moment including laptops so if you are on the fence its worth trying one. Though I did not keep it due to large size and I didn't like the display (too much matte, too much black crush) I was happy to have been able to test and see if I liked it for less than $10 return shipping. It was pretty much worth it as I try and pick out my new notebook.

I choose Amazon due to their store card promotion (12 months no interests). I ordered my MSI GhostPro 3K-046 from the seller, GenTech PC, and asked if I could request several options found on GenTech PC website which they were able to do. All you have to do is give them Amazon order number and whatnot so they can find it and make some changes. Received my laptop in few days after ordering it. Their customer service has been excellent and very helpful so the whole experience has been great.

    The laptop is a beast!

Does anyone here knows about any power management tool, like Lenovo's which could let us set the battery charge discharge cycle

By the way, I was wondering since I've never had a SSD and a HDD inside my computer : it seems logical to install Win8.1 on the SSD, but what about all the other programs? I mean there ar demandings programs (CAD, games, etc..) and the others (internet browser, Office suite, etc...) : do you think it is interesting to save space on the SSD for demanding programs in installing the other ones on the HDD ?

I put frequently loaded programs and games with heavy load times on the ssd. Everything else goes on the hdd. Office and cad are on the hdd for me since I usually leave them open after I launch them and the load times aren't that bad. 128gb isn't enough for me or else I wouldn't be playing this game and would just put all programs on the ssd. Once 1tb ssd hits $250, I'm getting one.

Use the ssd as much as possible for most used applications and use the hdd to relegate applications when you must.

If you put in SSD with at least 256GB then it can help with most of programs and data, but if it's going to be 128GB then you will need secondary drive such as HDD to help with storage issue.

Hi, there's battery calibration program on MSI support driver that you can use to optimize the battery life. Also MSI has program which will allow you switch three different performance setting (Green / Comfort / Sport ). Green will use less performance, longer battery life (can't say how long since I haven't checked it out).

For my setting, I put most used applications other than Windows on SSD (Maya, Photoshop, ZBrush, Office, etc.) and games and other files on 1TB HDD. You can always upgrade SSD to bigger SSD but, 128gb is more than enough for me (it's near half full for me).

Thought I'd share another benchmark. I've been playing Shadow of Mordor for the past hour. At 1080p, Ultra settings with textures set on 3GB, I'm getting 50-60fps, average 54fps. Max CPU is 71C and max GPU is 76C. I have it on my lap as well. This game looks and plays incredible. Very happy. :)

It would be nice if someone with 6GB of VRAM can post some comparison stats with the same settings and Ultra textures(6GB).

Might be a silly question, but does anyone know, roughly speaking, what the largest discount (i.e. % off) there has been on any of the previous GS60s? Looking to buy one now, but don't know if I should wait for a better deal in terms of %.

That Green/Comfort and Sport mode is bull i think.
Since you cant switch on battery usage, only when its plugged in.
    Thats really annoying.
Also the fans rev up way too fast, may anyone post a fan profile for the GS70 3GB VRAM 1080P Version?
Does a fan profile hurt my warranty?

Yeah, I think Shift was to help during idle tasks and even then, the difference between modes was imperceptible.

Just picked up my 970m GS60. I was worried that the fans would be abnormally loud but this is as good as any laptop I have ever used. As quiet as my old S13P under normal load. WAY quieter than my old 13 inch XPS. Really lovely machine.
