This laptop is overkill for LoL. I played 2+ hour long Dota sessions at 3k and 60fps on my lap before(no cooler or pad). It was still tolerable. Turning the settings down helped lower the temps even more. I don't think you'll be sorry if you bought it and it will be a little future-proof for you if that's all you play.
Yes, all the models are IPS or equivalent except for the 850M model.
-
So does anyone have the 4K panel? Do you run games fine?
-
I haven't tried any serious games on it yet.
Does company of heroes count. Also rise of nations, supreme commander 2.
All maxed all run very very well min fps 58 -
You get over 48 Hz on the 4k panel?
-
Yes
It's an external monitor -
-Shot in the heart-
Maybe I should wait for a newer version of this laptop? Defeats the purpose of getting the laptop if I need an extra screen
-
Can you be more specific. What monitor are you using?4k? How it can handle de HD4600? Do you notice any flickering?
-
If you're getting it to game on then the only choice should really be the one with the 970 in it.

There is another fresh and happy owner of that machine. I took mine as 2QE-230NL (1080p gtx970 3gb). Purpose of use was to work with everything, which is requiered for structural engineers. Starting from excel-sheet to revit modeling. And of course, engineers must have fun also.
I had formerly a 4 years old Dell Inspiron. So the step is huge. Machine is thinner and more rigid than i thought. No complaints about fan noise at idle. Its low. Battery lasts about 2.5h at work. Also fine. So, very good deal for me.
About gaming. I ran Grid 2 for 2 hours at ultra settings. Absolutely fluently. BUT, machine got quite hot at the bottom surface. I could not hold hand there. Temps were GPU 72 and CPU 65 by Dragon Centre. I suppose, thats the way, it should be. My question is, is there still no use of good cooling pad? Just to bring temps down a bit?Last edited: Jun 13, 2015 -
Those are great temps IBMatrico!
Can't comment on the cooling pad if it helps or not since I don't have one yet but I have a question about fan noise when gaming.
1) are the fans still always on even when not doing anything intensive?
2) are they still pretty loud when gaming?
3) is that the Broadwell version?
One thing that annoys me is excessively loud fans under load, I know these thin and lite laptops run a bit hotter and louder than other gaming laptops but just wondering if they reworked the fan profiles .
Thanks . -
CPU fan is always on. At idle sometimes at lower revs, sometimes a bit higher. I have always radio on at work. So fan noise does not bother me
Under heavy load, i think every gaming laptop is quite loud. My colleague has Y510p. When it starts to cool down the machine, there comes out even some kind of whistling sound. With GS60 yesterday evening, at least, my kids in the other room, did not wake up
It is subjective thing, the fan noise.
CPU is Haswell - 4720HQ. -

Ah it will have nothing on my old P570WM, that thing has 4 large fans that make it sound like a mini server room when it's going for it lol.
-
True Meaker but the less noise the better, not only because fan noise can be annoying but also very distracting to others around you.
If it's a louder low pitched sound I can deal with but a higher pitched whoosh canon be awful. -
By comparison on fan noise, the GS60 is quieter than my previous GT60. For confirmation, I asked my wife, as we both share an office all day, and well, it's obvious when I start gaming randomly ha.... the GT60 is noisier with it's single fan than the GS60 is with it's two separate fans, despite being much slimmer. I dare say Maxwell being cooler helps as well as opposed to the 780m Kepler that was in my GT60. Don't get me wrong, neither are quiet, but noise was a bigger annoyance on my GT60 for both of us.

Cooling pads don't help your temperatures at all. They only help your lap temperature.
The intakes aren't on the bottom so it's not facilitating any air flow.
-
Question about the 150W power supply:
Is it enough juice for overclocking a bit?
Nothing crazy but the standard 135/200 OC.
If so how are the temps when OCing anyway?
Not necessarily at those levels but in general.
And does using Intel XTU under volting help with temps at all?
How much is the standard under volt?
Just trying to see if this machine can run cooler ( not that it runs hot stock, temps seem really good) but to use the quiet fan control tool that someone posted earlier to run as silent as possible when gaming/under load.
Thanks! -
Brand new toy, brand new problem...
Can anyone help me to solve an issue i'm having with multiple screens: by switching from extended view (2 displays) to main display (laptop), the screen turns to completely black sometimes. None of buttons will help. Only way is to hold power button for 5 seconds until machine shuts down. After that restart it works. Both video drivers are up to date. Any thoughts?Last edited: Jun 15, 2015 -

There are a lot of older NB systems that are pretty loud upon full load lol.
tems that are pretty loud upon full load lol. -
Quick question on the CPU :
I found a great deal on a "barebones" model it has a free upgrade to a i7-4870HQ but wondering if it runs hotter than the i7-4710HQ that you can also get with this model.
From what I hear the IRIS PRO 5200 on the 4870 makes it run hotter than the 4710.
Any owners input on this would be greatly appreciated. -
Wow, never knew there was an iris option. The TDP is the same so theoretically they should produce the same heat, right? I can tell you from my experience, there's little to no performance benefit using the iris CPU on a gaming laptop of this magnitude. I thought there might be battery advantages to gaming on the iris over the 970m but there isn't - the 970m was actually a little more efficient.
You give up on your razer? -
Just ran across this in another thread here (thanks Alexnvidia!), it's a new fan control tool for MSI laptops, including the GS60 series, that gives you control over the fan for those that want things a bit quieter or silent. Haven't tried it, will load it later today:
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=256233.0
MSI calls it "Silent Option" Fan Control -
No still have it but might be selling it soon, but already looking at a replacement
Anyway the barebones model has 4870HQ, 6GB 970M and 256GB SSD for under $1400, how can you beat that.
Not really worried about gaming with the IRIS pro but a little worried it may run hotter than standard 4710HQ. -
Wow, that's great. Get it!
-
Heh just might ,forgot to add its still the great SAMSUNG PLS 1080p screen and added RAM for a total of 16GB, it would haven been under $1300 without the RAM upgrade. so you still satisfied with your Ghost ?

Big time. My only hangup was the trackpad, which has vastly improved and I am happy and used to it now. Also the speakers are meh, but so are almost all other gaming laptops and I'm not about to settle for a Y50. I will almost for sure trade up when the next graphics card line releases(hopefully with Skylake). I'm really hoping they keep the same form factor so I can simply swap screens, since I have the discontinued 3k. I'm also about to put dual 512GB SSDs in the M.2 slots. If I ever get used to 2 TB storage, I'll pretty much be locked in forever.
This is my main machine now, so I need the space. It's nearly been a near now and I haven't been envious of anything else out there so far.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well the GT series do have quite good speakers but with the slim GS series there is only so much you can do, meh is still better than most in this size machine.
-
Sorry, you're right - I meant to say "thin" gaming laptops. These are still better than what I saw in the Razer Blade and the Aorus X3+ -

GT72 Dominator Pro Dragon-695 is bundled with this processor.
http://us.msi.com/product/nb/GT72-Dominator-Pro-Dragon-GTX980.html#hero-specification&sku_no=359
Both processors are rated 47W TDP so they are the same on paper, and per Passmark benchmark below,
Intel HD 4600 = 721 points
Intel Iris Pro 5200 = 1193 points
5200 is 1.65 times faster than 4600. -
Yeah, if you don't have a GPU maybe. I don't think it will run 1.65 times faster on this machine though. I'm pretty sure Passmark utilizes the GPU in it's test so those scores will be much higher and likely closer together on the GS60
-
This is pretty cool. It's basically a much more user friendly version of Svet's tool. And it doesn't require flashing. Working well for me so far. I'm actually kind of surprised they released it openly like that. I had to pay for Svet's...
-
Since I don't have this laptop yet quick question on the "quiet fan tool" can you set the speeds at all levels? Or do once the temps reach a certain point the " stock" fan profiles take over.
Really interested in making this as silent as possible when gaming.
Thanks again -
From what I've seen, it overrides the stock profile. It's just like Svet's tool except there are less numbers; there's no temperature zone numbers - only colors. You can set the fan speed for each temperature zone for the CPU and the GPU. I haven't messed with it to see if there are any interlocks preventing you from disabling the fan at high temperatures. I would imagine the firmware will crash the computer once thermal limits are reached though.
One thing about the fan is it won't operate at ultra low speeds. It's either 40-something percent or off. The lowest speed is pretty audible in a quiet room so silent web browsing is about all you will get with the occasional fan burst if you use Chrome. I'll post more details if I learn anything more. I really only messed with it for 10 minutes last night.IKAS V likes this. -
Yup, so it's pretty much the same. Anything set between 1-47% is 2823rpm for me. 0% is off. So I have the first 2 settings at 0% and the 3rd at 48%, with the rest evenly distributed up the default settings. In Balanced mode, this keeps the CPU fan practically off for light tasks. I haven't messed with the GPU since I usually use headphones but it should work the same way.

Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The fans likely have a fairly high start voltage.
-
I don´tknow why, but after intalling the "Silent option", it won´t start. Am i missing something or...?

Hello guys, I would like to ask if anyone knows what kind of lcd panel the new GS60 Ghost pro-606 has. I come from a Macbook Air 2013, which although its TN panel is decent, the viewing angles and color accuracy suffer a lot.
I have been looking for a new laptop that can handle light gaming, and I am torn between the battery life and sleek design of the UX501, and the beefier GS60 606. The only game I play is Final Fantasy XIV so I do not know whether a 960M would suffice to run the game at 1080p with medium settings, or I definitely need a 970M. I will also be using the laptop for professional work in the office, so it has to look the part. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
It comes with this panel below, which is frequently used throughout GS60 series.
Samsung LTN156HL01-102, PLS panel
970M gives more fps on games over 960M, but it is slightly crippled due to limited thermal capacity on GS60. Other than this, the rest of spec are also pretty good overall on GS60 Ghost Pro. -
I beg to differ, I've yet to have the 970m be thermally limited... it will run in the low-mid 80C's when running the latest game (Witcher 3 etc) for hours on High/Ultra, but have yet to see it throttle back or even get close. What scenario are you seeing thermal limits reached? Mine doesn't come close.
Not trying to be rude, but curious as I haven't even come close to thermal issues.
-
I've never hit the thermal limits myself. The 870m, yes, for sure. This one hovers in the high 80s when I push it
-
Yup, no thermal limits reached here either so far. No throttling, it just gets noisy
The same like @be77solo and @Xentar712 I get mid-80s C in the most demanding graphically intense games like Crysis 3 or Witcher 3 (this one played for long hours, with high ambient temperature ~30 C).
It seems MSI GS60's cooling solution is adequate, e.g. in Witcher 3 when you turn HairWorks on, GPU temperature doesn't change much but fan does get much louder (HairWorks is about the most punishing thing you can do to your GPU today in realistic use case scenario). -
Nice to see your laptops running so cool guys
Have you al repasted with better quality thermal paste? If so with what brand thermal paste
Undervolt?
If that's the case how much of a undervolt? -
No, everything stock here (thermal paste / clocks / voltage / fan speed tables).IKAS V likes this.
-
Stock here. There was no need and disassembling this thing is a major event. Maybe when I install the m.2 ssds but I'm still leaning towards no.

Been looking around for a gaming laptop for quite some time now, and finally decided on getting an MSI GS60 after months of intensive research! I had some problems finding any within my budget of £850 (I'm in the UK), the best one i found was £899 and this only had the i7-4710HQ and Kepler 860M. So i hung around and eventually one popped up made by a company called CyberPower in their June sale, rebranded as the Fangbook Edge S 4K. With the i7-4720HQ and GTX 965M it was a much better proposition for me, so i ordered one! Super excited, currently waiting for it to arrive!
It seems that the only major differences between the CyberPower and MSI versions is that the keyboard is locked to red, but i'm convinced this could be changed somehow as the keyboard does have the functionality to display all the other colours. Also the lid is a bit different and uses the CP logo instead, but i'm sure this won't matter too much. -
Hey CivicJDM congrats on your new laptop!
That is a great deal for essentially the same laptop minus a few features, since it's technically the same can you still use MSI downloads for updates like for the BIOS and other things.
I'm not a big fan of the look on the CyberPower lid of there FangBook but I'm a bigger fan of saving money
it's not that big a deal anyway, how many times do you look at the lid ....couple of seconds before opening.
Would love to hear your impressions of the laptop once you get itCivicJDM likes this. -
Hey, thanks for the kind response! Yeah that's what i was thinking, and maybe flashing the MSI BIOS would somehow unlock the keyboard so it could display the other colours via the SteelSeries Engine. And yep, i'm sure i could live with the slightly less attractive lid as it's not what i'd be looking at most of the time. They phoned up a while ago saying that the laptop had been completed and was being posted out to me, so maybe i'll receive it either tomorrow or Saturday!

The single colour keyboards simply lack the other LEDs.

Hello all, new to the forum
proud owner of a GS60 2QE 4K model in Gold. Absolutely love the laptop, however have had a few issues with it and it has had two new screen bezels in two months, but other than that it's great. Wanted to ask, are there any cases for these laptops or accessories?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Congrats on your purchase, and sorry to hear that you had gone through 2 screen bezels.
Try opening the screen lid from the center next time which can provide balanced wear and tear on both end. As far as accessory goes, you can check out amazon for vast amount of selections. -
How hard/easy is it to add m.2 SATA SSD?
Is it just unscrew the bottom panel (easy) or require some dissasembly?
