So I bought the paid version of 3D Mark and ran it again this time disabling throttlestop and uninstalling Dragon Center![]()
Now it seems to be a little more inline with what others were getting

You may have undervolted too hard.
The way I test if my undervolt is taking away performance is to use Cinebench.
When you run Cinebench for the first time, remember that score. Undervolt then retest. Keep going until you are 1230-1250ish. Once there, keep undervolting until your score goes negative or Cinebench crashes.
+/- 7 is fine between tests. Anything more than 7 that is NEGATIVE means your undervolt is too much.
Also, make sure your core and cache have the same undervolt at all times.

So this is quite interesting. Were you getting lower scores with your 2060 before Dragon Center uninstallation?
In a previous post, @brf4n managed to get only time spy=5497 (graphics=5555, cpu=5192) and FireStrike = 13276 (graphics=14689, physics=15069, combined=6989).
The TimeSpy graphics and CPU score seem way off compared to yours.
@Michael A. Saldana , Could you run fire strike like the way you ran Time Spy and share the detailed results of graphics and CPU score along with avg and max temps during the bench? I'm just trying to find out if the 2060 is actually inferior to the 1070 or if its a driver issue throwing false alarms.
Thanks.Last edited: Feb 7, 2019hmscott likes this. -
Here's a video of the 2060 model (stock with undervolt) playing BF... temps seem bad across several games. He explains more in the comments.
I'm getting mine in later today so I'll post back impressions.hmscott likes this. -
To be honest, that looks unplayable at those frame rates. Nvidia should have just skipped on the RTX for the ##60 model. Meh! Though I'm quite interested in finding out if DLSS can improve Frame Rates by atleast 30-40%.hmscott likes this.

And that is why I WILL be repasting with LM, raising the 45w power limit to 90w, disabling bdprochot and replacing it with a custom throttlestop profile that will downclock the cpu if it hits 98°chmscott and Michael A. Saldana like this.

How would one do that? Kind of new to this...Michael A. Saldana likes this.

What's the tool he's running that's showing the performance/thermal overlay?

Does anyone know if screen capture causes FPS to drop?

did anyone tried yet?

Got my 2060 model in. Hitting 90C CPU easily in Overwatch, only medium settings, framerate capped to 144hz with cooler boost on and the laptop elevated.
I'm not sure whose idea it was that this laptop doesn't throttle, that's insane. Maybe if you got it custom-made with LM, but for most of us... This sucks.

Damn.
My unit came with LM as I said in the review.
Have you tried undervolting yet?
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -
Oh dear. 90*C is a tad too high for my liking. Undervolting might get the temps down a bit.
Could you kindly run Firestrike and post the graphics and cpu score as well? I'm trying to compare between all the 2060 models posted by folks here to see if we have a notebook heating issue or a driver issue or just an overpriced new architecture. -
Undervolt of -.160mv seems stable, temps still hovering close to 90C in Overwatch... That's not an unusable temp on other gaming laptops (my AW 17R5 handles up to 95C without throttling) but the GS65 throttles itself even in the mid and upper 80s it seems.
GPU is nice and cool though!
Will report back with Firestrike... -
You might want to consider repasting the laptop, also how are your ambient temps?
-
It's 63F in here. I don't have the expertise to be repasting this laptop :/
-
Where did you buy it from?
You should be able to return it citing overheating and get a full refund.
Probably best to buy from an etailer with LM applied.

No one is born with it, no worries. it doesn't take an expert and many users here have done it. But no pressure
if you do get around doing it, you can check disassembly guides and all and learn/read before even attempt it.
Plus you will bond with your machine more! hahaha.
63F damm, I am near 100F here... but anyways the CPU seems to be running hot after undervolting so really, repasting is probably the only thing left.Dannemand, ALLurGroceries and JRey like this. -
Just remember the longevity of LM, some users will keep the machine a long time and LM is not very good in the long term.

Best Buy. Unfortunately BB has financing options that HIDevolution doesn't support, so getting it from them wasn't an option. I'll keep testing but this is a bummer to say the least, especially since the last GS65 I had had bad thermals as well. Really hoped they'd fixed that this year...
-
You can probably try exchanging for another laptop and hope for a better factory roulette. I do find it odd that Resellers couldn't fill your financing requirements since they all support a lot of options but it is understandable when you have particular limits and only can use specific stores.
But if you ever feel like opening up the laptop, there is a wealth of information you can use to guide you
Dannemand and toughasnails like this. -
There are financing options such as 0% APR and paying monthly.
I do agree with Ry’s idea though regarding returning and getting another laptop hoping for a better unit.

I also bought a best buy model but I haven't really seen the level of throttling you seem to be having. I would definitely go straight for the exchange, maybe you just got a bad unit.
-
Michael, do you have some data for us regarding performance and temps?
I’d like to start compiling a list that I’ll update and post to the owners lounge thread.
Preferably, I’d like:
-Temps
-Undervolted? (Yes or no)
-Fan curve (stock or custom)
-Purchased where
-Repasted?
-Firestrike score ( no GPU overclock)

@JRey
So I'm at work until tonight but what I can tell you now is
-During the games I played this morning (Rocket League, Borderlands 2) GPU Maxed: 70 Degrees C, CPU Maxed: 83 Degrees C
-Yes undervolted (-136 mV cache and core)
- Custom fan curve on Silent Option, CPU and GPU maxed at 130%
-Purchased from Best Buy Jan. 29th
-No Repaste (yet)
-Firestrike score will do after work -
Thanks. Also, please let me know your ambient temps.
For fire strike, normal overall test

My 2060 was also purchased from Best Buy. Ran a TimeSpy test this morning (no undervolt) and CPU temps hit 93. 70F in my office at the time.
Have my 2070 arriving soon and will test that one as soon as I get it.JRey likes this. -
So here's something quite interesting. The CPU hits 90C incredibly easy, yes. With that said, in my testing, games and otherwise, when the CPU is indicating "thermal throttling" around 90C, it reports a perfect 3.88ghz the same way it does otherwise. It doesn't appear to downclock... I wonder what's going on.
PS, GS65 2060 Fire Strike results: stock, fan speed auto, -.150mv underclock, ambient temp 65F: 12,796 -
Hmmm... that’s interesting...
Can you share a screenshot of throttlestop?
What were your temps when using a fan curve/cooler boost?

I’m curious now if Dragon Center is overvolting in the bios still... If anyone knows how to find where that is, please do...
Advanced > Overclocking Performance Menu > Processor
What is the...
-IA AC/DC loadline
-Core voltage mode
-Core voltage offset
-Offset prefix
Bios unlock:

YOU’VE BEEN WARNED
Left alt, Right control, Right shift, F2.

How do I get into the unlocked Bios?
-
Edited the post above
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -
Is there a way to create a bios dump from the advanced menu? And if you update the bios do you have to unlock it again?
-
unsure, never tried it. You have to unlock each time you want to go in there. #SafetyFeature

If you want to permanently unlock the bios without the code you need to contact Svet over the MSI forums and pay him to make a custom BIOS that will have the menu open.
