Thank you for this!! Googling the issue had me searching for exe's with corrupted icons...
Does anyone else have a flood of WHEA-Logger errors in event viewer (pointing to the Killer Gigabit Network card)? I tried uninstalling it and resinstalling the drivers directly from killernetworking.com, but I'm still logging 50 errors per second...

What does that vertical line mean? You locked voltage to ~825 and clock to ~1800, and then everything to the right is ignored?
-
Is this because throttlestop is set to run at startup? Could you go into safe mode and disable that?
-
Hey guys, I'm looking to get a GE63, which seems essentially the same but with a 15 inch chassis and with extra RGB.
Those of you who have the 2080 (non-max-Q) version of the GE75 with the 280W adapter: is enough power able to be supplied to support the CPU AND GPU running at full tilt?
Also, how are the thermals (stock)? Battery?
Thank you!Last edited: Mar 26, 2019 -
I have the exact same thing going on.
-
My only complaint is that I cant truly control the fans on this machine. Using silent fan or dragon center, basic or an advanced curve...once 80c is hit on cpu the bios kicks the fans on to whatever it wants.
Do any of you real MSI pros know what bios settings to change to stop the fans coming on at all? I found the active trigger point in bios but I changed it to 100c .. but regardless the cpu fan kicks up at 80c even if the advanced curve is set to 0% -
I briefly had the GE63. It has better cooling than my GE75. The case is the same as the pascal GE63. The bottom is open and its just a little thicker. I wish I had those temps on the GE75 but I don't. Keep in mind the 63 has normal trackpad and big bezels..Its also a AUO71 screen which isn't as good as the panel on the 75.
It's only a half inch on one side and a quarter inch smaller on the other than the GE75cloudpower likes this. -
Does this also apply to the new 2019 RTX 2080 version? It has a 144hz 3ms screen instead of 120, and of course it's a 2080 instead of 1070
-
I was referring to the GE63 with RTX 2080.
-
Ah, awesome! There are so few people who have/had that model, you're the first I've found! I majorly appreciate it
What's the difference in the panels?
Also any idea about the power draw stuff I mentioned, if you don't mind me asking? (And/or battery)... -
I think many dont buy it because it doesnt make a lot of sense. Its just barely smaller than the GE75. Worse trackpad, bezels, thicker, tacky RGB and red trim. They didnt update the design this generation. The screen is 144hz..but in my opinion its not great color accuracy. The contrast is good though.
Battery was typical for a raider. Not very good.
I had bought it wih the reasoning that 1080p is better on a 15.6"screen and I hoped that the trackpad would be precision drivers like the GE75.
Theres a reason its not called the GE65.cloudpower likes this. -
My G75 is hitting max temps of 80 on CPU after undervolt and slight turbo clock tweaks and a little bit under 80 on GPU without any tweaks. Placing a book under the laptop enhanced the airflow and lowered the max temps for 5C too. I got stock paste so far. I think the thermals are quite good. As for the power consumption, I haven't dropped below 90% battery under heavy loads. Even that might've been a battery calibration issue. I calibrated my battery last night and the battery might stay higher during loads now. I have to experiment. The performance of the laptop is very impressive.

All helpful, thank you! I just wish the GE75 had those beautiful RGB lights on the back...Kommati likes this.

pretty much confirmed poor CPU performance compared to other 8750H laptops. MSI really dropped the ball on this. BIOS has not been updated since Jan.
on the up side, GPU performance is very good.Last edited: Mar 27, 2019 -
Guys I have the same question. I‘ve tweaked my Bios, repaste, using Throttlestop and Afterburner for undervolting (and overclocking) and silent option.
I got really good temperatures (max 72 degrees on CPU and GPU after 1 hour Battlefield V) and awesome 7800 points in Timespy.
But the fans are running so fast. But they dont need to be so fast.
Any ideas? -
Is that with LM or another paste?
-
I just received my GE75 2070 from Gentech this week (love their free repastes). I went with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut on CPU/ IC Diamond on GPU, and have been putting it through it's paces. Throttlestop / undervolting is a new to me.
Starting from scratch install of windows -- followed these steps

I've been working to undervolt (stable at -160mv /68 degrees) in ThrottleStop and Prime95 Small FFT stress tests.
However I'm seeing Throttles PL1 / EDP Other

So is it true that 2080 version 230w charger does not have enough to truelly push the laptop to its limits in terms of performance?

Hi I just received my laptop from hidevolution when you have the time do you think you could help me out with these tweaks?
Sent from my EVR-L29 using Tapatalk -
Theres a bios setting i cant figure out that kicks the fans on to a preset speed if the temps get over ?c. Regardless of silent fan setting or Dragon center
-
@Ultra Male ....Don't know if you come to this thread too often anymore, but could you help this gentleman out?
-
It locks ur speed to that voltage and core.
Nothing else. As u can see he spikes to 2000Mhz when using and that's too much for the laptop
There is alote problems that MSI need to fix it. -
I still keep saying.
MSI needs a new BIOS and FC.
There are alote reports of issues due the lack of performance.
For the 2070 version the lack of performance is due the i7 8750H and continues lack of power limit.
For the 2080 is the same problem but a higher on the GPU side. The powerbrick is only 280W and that's not enough for the 2080 since most models come with 320W.
Its proven that the 8SG uses 312W and it only has 280W. Also the 8SF has issues with the GPUs since there is lack of communication with CPU and GPU
Not sure if u guys in the states and Canada side have MSI working on it but In Europe they admit those problems and are trying to release a new bios and FC that should fix the CPU problems for all... GPU side I think it was a bad idea going for a RTXalexnvidia and cloudpower like this. -
Really curious to see if this is being reported anywhere or corroborated...
-
Hey, I set exact same values but some offset fields look completely different- what did I miss bud?
Also noticed that the small led next to power button is always glowing red/orange for me, even after setting it manually on intel on nvidia control panel. Wonder whats that about.
Overall Im happy with my 2070 model, its handling bf5 on maxed out settings on 60c/CPU and 70c/GPU between 70-110fps. Don't understand how though reading these posts here since I haven't repasted my gpu/cpu, no bios mods either. Only using a cooling pad which usually helps a degree or two and just slight tweak above by vidaporvida with Afterburner and throttlestop. Oh, and obviously I have updated to latest drivers and dual channel RAM at 2666hz.
Edit: nevermind guys, forgot to enable speed shift and speedstep since coffelake was not mentioned in throttlestop manual, so I didn't enable it in first place, lol. On the bright side got about 20-30% more performance now. CPU is now stable at 70-75c also under load instead of previous 60c. Could tweak a bit more I quessLast edited: Mar 28, 2019 -
What is all this fuss about? How much power do you think the cpu draws? With the power limit removed and a sensible undervolt i only pull maximum 65watts at constant 3.9hhz. With the power limit in place it still goes to near 65 watt peak before power throttling.
The 2080 gpu is 150watts. Your average will never be higher. Ever.
That's 215 watts. Do you think the rest of the system pulls 125 watts to get to 320watts??
If you buy your own Kill A Watt meter and plug it in the wall and then plug the laptop in you will know the draw for yourself. ($20 on Amazon)
The plus side to MSI is that you can tweak the cpu power limit and most manufacturers you cant.
This forum has all the answers how to do that if you look.
If a basic user runs the machine at stock, the cpu will power throttle at high load...Intel specs!
The GPU will drop clocks beyond 150 watts. Nvidia specs!
Getting to 320watt is ridiculous. It power throttles at far less than that as its designef to.
For an MSI 8750H...remove power limit and undervolt like many happy people here do..sustained 3.9 Ghz.
For 150 watt 2080....apply undervolt curve and you can reach 200mhz higher sustained clocks. -
I totally agree 280W psu is not enough to feed this laptop with rtx 2080. The fact that battery severely drains during game play is enough to prove this point. A proper psu should not require battery power to maintain performance. And I agree that msi really need a bios firmware update to address the lack of performance from the cpu.
However, knowing what msi is from past experience owning gt72, their after sales support is next to non. Updates are far few in between if there is even one. GT series might get slightly more, but the rest of the affordable lines will probably be ignored.
The only reason I came back looking at msi is because Alienware area-51m is not offered in my country. Had high hopes for GE75, however judging from user feedbacks and reviews, doesn't look too promising. Drastic battery drain while gaming is already a bad sign. -
Does it just keep on draining until 0? If it stops draining at a certain point, that would mean it would have to start throttling performance, right?
-
One of the owner's feedback during gaming session, the battery was drained to 85%. Not sure how long was that gaming session though , I'm assuming 1-2 hours maybe? I have also seen YouTube owners talking about battery drain while running benchmarks too. Point is, if it requires battery power support all the time when under gaming load, what happens after the battery is degraded over time?
Maybe my concerns are not founded because for battery to start loosing capacity, it can take 2-3 years and by that time this laptop might not be working anymore. My Gt72 died just after 3 years. -
Wouldn't that be expected while it's "plugged in/not charging"? I played Sekiro for 5 hours max settings at 1440p and the battery never went under 90%; same as normal use...
-
I've been playing Anthem and The Division 2 for hours at a time (4-8 hours depending on the days) and my battery never went below 90%. It never got throttled during those sessions.Failwyn likes this.
-
I am also having the problem with power button staying orange, even after forcing the machine to use intel graphics in NVIDIA control panel. Tried updating drivers, didn't help. Battery drains incredibly fast because of the 2080 being active all the time. How do I get optimus to switch the graphics? It's kinda frustrating that a brand new machine doesn't work the way it should.
-
Are you using an external monitor?
-
I am using an external monitor at home, but I move a lot so not at all times. The light is still red without the monitor. Can plugging in an external monitor mess things up even after it is not used?
-
Mine is working correctly, orange light when external monitors are plugged in, white when they are disconnected... If you open Task Manager, what applications does it show are using the discrete GPU?
-
I was a little worried about getting a 1440p monitor for BF5, but the 2070 does a decent job keeping it over 70fps. Still not sure 32" is for me, wow, this thing is big.
-
Its pure fact.
I have every email I excanged with MSI (Iberia) and they are very concerned with those issues. They even did admit there are more reports across Europe about lack of perfomance and inconsistence of Frames (Microshutter, Shutter, FPS drops, Freezes), so I would say its pretty sure that something is wrong.
They told even this "we are working close with Nvidia to solve the problem" - Not sure what that means but I guess there is something related to CPU/GPU.
U miss the CPU Cache (very importante) and iGPU to undervolte. Also u can lock ur CPU to 3.6GHz if u wanna alote less temps.
By using 100% of CPU u get powerlimit throttle over 3.4GHz (3.4GHz u get 46W of it). But since games do not use 100% of it, its safe to use it a 3.6GHz or even 3.8GHz.
U can go to -160mV but I got some crashes so yes, I recomend to use -140mV for every setting (for iGPU I would use -80mV).
Any question Im glad to help.
I disagree but I got ur point!
For me the RTX 2080 to get a full power u need 320W and I tested with a friend on his GE75 and he got in avg more 10 FPS then with the original powerbrick so yes there is some limit.
Anycase, the Powerthrottle of CPU can´t be fixed by any costum BIOS, u will lose warranty and even destorys ur system. I´m sad that MSI did that powerlimit for the 2070 version since there is a great room for power usage (powerdraws only 230W but has a 280W so yes, the RTX 2080 needs more power).
Undervolte doesn´t fix any of the power throttle and yes sadly it only helps on temps. For ppl like me that is using LM is great having more power but I can´t use it so whats the point?
I get great temps, sure, speed doens´tr matter much since from 3.6GHz to 3.9GHz won´t do much of increase FPS.
Im just telling my personal opinion, not that it does matter but I would be carefull before buying this system. I even regred to get it...
MSI has a great suport atleast here in Europe. They are concerned and I even asked for refund and they would give it but since Im using it with LM I didn´t want to go for a GTX 1070.
Battery can draw, never had that issue, well I´m using dragon center and the option is on 90% always charge... but again u made a great point!
I never had a GE version, only GL and GP. They weren´t great. But still better them ASUS.alexnvidia likes this. -
U have great scores, are u using any tweak on ur CPU or GPU, overclock or something? U beat my scores in 3DMark :O
-
I'm not sure if Awholeham's guide helps with performance, other than that a bit of undervolt and whatever auto overclock Afterburner chose.
-
Actually, i'm referring more towards MSI software aftersales support, like BIOS, firmware, driver updates etc. They hardly or almost never update anything. and even if they miraculously do, it's painfully slow to appear.
Regarding your point of view on support, yes i agree in EU or USA the support might be good because you all are protected by consumer laws. In Asia, MSI aftersales support is rubbish to say the least. Remember the time when MSI promised GT72, GT80 with 980M is upgradable and it turned out not upgradable when pascal launched? In EU, USA, you all are compensated, offered trade in or taken care of when you make noise to MSI. In Asia, despite my best efforts, they completely dismissed any compensation and refused to offer trade in, which makes MSI nothing but a bunch of cons operating in Asia. To top it off, my GT72 died just after 3 years of use while my very old alienware M17xR2 (almost 10 years) is still alive and kicking today. Quality is piss poor, aftersales support is horrific, software updates support is non existence. The only thing good about MSI laptop that i can attest to is their cooling out of the box which is great. but then again, it had to be because they put anti tamper warranty void sticker on one of the screws which does not allow any repaste.
I really do not wish to support any of MSI laptops anymore but dell malaysia chose not to offer area-51m here so i had no choice but to shop around again for laptops offering FULL RTX 2080. GE75 is one of the very few modern looking laptops offering that. -
When you say to under-volt the iGPU do you mean the "Intel GPU" or the iGPU Unslice"?
Also where is the option to add 1.0000V under CPU voltage? -
My 2080 is at 0% in the Performance tab. How can I view the specific applications? 0% would indicate it is not used tho...
-
Strange, my clock speeds go up to 2k also. Did you find any solution to this, is it RMA case?
Also getting following limits contantly without load or anything(stock core speeds for gpu):

Everything you said is innacurate.
Unless you use a watt meter to see how much you pull...whatever your friend said doesnt help much.
The gpu pulls 150watts. Thats it. Its not starving for power.
Undervolting is all about power. Undervolting the cpu reduces power draw. That's it. The temps reduce as a result of that. Most experienced people on this site know this...
The bios mod is just a key combination. No flashing of bios.
Unlocking the power limit and undervolting i run at 3.9hhz all the time and power draw never goes over 65watts. In fact it averages under 45 watts.
I know i should just keep my mouth shut when people make all this unwarranted fuss. The other experienced guys in this thread are keeping quiet and so will i.
Ill admit that out of the box for the inexperienced user this laptop cpu will easily overheat and drop clocks.
The gpu will bounce at 150 watts and clocks will drop without a voltage curve.
If you can conquer it its a great laptop but does take more work than it probably should.
All the info to do this is on this forum ( not youtube!)

this worked for me, copy pasting someone's post, don't know how to link posts
"Use this.
https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/nvidia-driver-slimming-utility.423072/
Download the driver directly from Nvidia. Also, download the latest iGPU driver from intel.
This is what you do.
Use the driver slimmer to slim down the nvidia driver. Check mark everything in the first “folder”, and also the NGX and USB C boxes.
Now, put your laptop into airplane mode.
Uninstall the control panels first, then the dGPU then iGPU IN THAT ORDER.
Do not restart.
Run DDU, boot into safe mode, and uninstall the dGPU (clean but do not restart) then the iGPU with restart.
Reboot
Install the intel driver.
Reboot
Install the slimmed down nvidia driver.
Reboot
Install the control panels from the Microsoft store
Reboot
Retest.
Note, if you’re using throttlestop and dragon center, I would disable dragon center in the task scheduler and reboot.
Let us know what happens. Personally, I see slight improvements in performance with a slimmed down driver.
Also, disable GEForce experience for now. Let’s remove all potential variables. "Last edited: Mar 29, 2019 -
That's the attitude mate! Just let the world burn, no wonder Noah didn't want any humans on the ship.... But yeah you're definitely spot on about this one, It does take more than it should for this laptop. I've wasted about 30 + h of my life reading this thread from post 1 to 100 several times over and again, testing all this stuff out and all this after wasting 3,5k dollars for gaming laptop that should perform in gaming without significant problems as advertised but it doesn't! AND guess what, still don't have all the answers. Instead of spending valuable time for boasting how ultimately experienced user you are and how **** everybody else on this thread are you could compile very easily your knowledge together for a new sticky topic, post, thread, etc or even your own yt video/article fo otherr users like here and more to come targeting thousands of hits for marketing and gains for yourself AND for other folks trying to get their laptops performing in optimized settings making the world a bit better place... haha, too much wanted

Somebody already did that, this post needs to be stickied:

Also, knibbler is referring to the people claiming that 280W is not sufficient power for the laptop, not people asking how to do things; we are all trying to help each other solve issues and attacking each other isn't going to help anyone. Making claims about the laptop needing a 330W power supply without a citation or any evidence (when the GPU and CPU don't come anywhere close to that limit) isn't helping either.thefatapple likes this.
