It's all good to me because I've never experienced anything better. So excuse me if I sound like a fanboy. The problems that you're experiencing are quite minuscule to me. It's only a difference of perception based on your pointof view vs mine. So whether you consider it a problem vs me being ok with it is only a matter of opinion. Maybe in the next 10 years, they'll have laptops that perform trice as good as these but still have heat problems. But run really cool at twice the performance as these. Is that still considered a problem? To some it might be.

That’s cool! Not sure why you have to rip on other people though.hmscott likes this.

From this post. Stock paste w/undervolt and custom fan profile ain't always enough stop throttling. And not all processors is equal binned. The BGA is undervolted -154mv and still run 92C and with nice clocks drop. Wait 2 or 3 month and see the temp will increase due dust build up.

Thanks for this -- it was a nice all-in-one resource.
Anyway I spent a while tinkering with Throttlestop. I have a LM repaste/fujipoly pads but spent the morning playing some games (Destiny 2, Overwatch) and with a slight and turbo limit and 125mv undervolt I'm at a peak GPU temp of 70c and peak CPU of 72 with the custom fan profile I cribbed from earlier in this thread.
Net result: I'm pretty happy with it. I do question the fact that you have to do this stuff to get a notebook to behave optimally as opposed to MSI's out-of-the-box configuration, but you can't have everything. -
Have Any of you that are using ThrottleStop enabled Speed Shift? If so, are you seeing an improvement? Thanks
-
Just needs a more aggressive fan profile. It’s all within spec.
Your BGA hating is showing.

Any thoughts on general flimsyness of the laptop? I'm getting ready to buy but it feels so flexy in hand.

It definitely flexes. I don’t find it bad. Love it and have no regrets.hmscott likes this.

I will wait for Computex before buying a laptop I think...those coffee lake CPU (and the integration of those 6-cores CPU) are once again very disappointing (speaking of thermals) : Intel still uses a high voltage offset and laptop manufacturers still let a CPU reach 90°+C out of the box in a gaming laptop.
Suffered enough with my alienware (runs perfectly now) but I'll keep an eye on that gs65 will have to tweak the fan profiles, repaste LM or Kryonaut and undervolt...same story different brand...tired of this.hmscott likes this. -
For a guy that doesn't game all that often on the go, I'm still having an awesome time with this laptop. I agree with you though, this thing gets toasty out the box, but it's wonderful having 2 additional cores now. Time will tell how the temps are handled!

Very nice!
Probably a good plan - seeing as you have a GTX 1070 laptop now. Unless you really need thin and light for portability (7.8 lbs on your Alienware versus 4.1 lbs on the GS65): better to wait.
Nothing to say? Makes sense. It was someone cherry picking bad results from this laptop. I get that people don't like BGA, but no reason to troll.

Same laptop, same paste. Just didn't have it fully dialed in correctly.Last edited: May 19, 2018 -
I was just thinking of that while reading the "hot" keyboard comments. I used to use them for "personal cooling", not keyboard cooling, but I'm sure you could point it at the keyboard to help reduce temps.

Yeah, doesn't make sense. He should add this to his setup: https://www.therooststand.com/ - better than a pad and makes this type of scenario work perfectly.hmscott likes this.

I just seen the model from BestBuy for $1999, is there something missing from the BB model that I don’t see because it’s a lot cheaper than anywhere else I’ve seen.
Is the 16GB’s of Ram on the BB version dual channel , I was in a hurry and couldn’t wait to ask a clueless salesperson to not know that answer ( I swear there are good sales people at BB but to far and few between, most of the time I know more about the product than they do).
Anyone get the GS65 from BB yet?
Would love to hear about it, one thing I don’t like at all is trying to add more Ram or storage being such a pain in the ass.hmscott likes this. -
I am not sure on the dual channel thing - but about the only difference is a slower SSD (not NVMe).
Discussion about it here:

In my opinion it’s the best deal if you don’t want upgrades now or re-paste.hmscott likes this. -
I got the BB one and I haven’t seen any problems. Screens fine and keyboard too. I think the main difference is 16gb ram vs 32gb

He (bitwit) left out a cooler, I prefer it for my docking setup. Works perfect for my OMEN or GS65. Hid the dock under the cooler for cable management...

I went with the BB model, you can scroll back a page or 2 and see my temps. How do i check for 2 sticks of ram or 1 without opening?
-
CPU-Z is free and easy - just go to the memory tab - will show dual channel:
https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html -
Download a tool called CPU-Z and install it on your system. This is basically a tool you can use that gathers different information of your system hardware. Under the memory tab it can tell you how much Ram you have and if it’s running in single or dual channel mode.
Too slow sk3tch beat me. -
The CPU-Z SPD tab is useful too, you can get the make / model info of the memory so you can buy and add more sticks of the same - much more compatible than trying to find another make and model that is equal. XMP and other useful data is available there too.
Example:

Mind running a couple more for me? One firestrike run with "auto" fan profile and no undervolt. The other run with "cooler boost" fans and no undervolt.hmscott likes this.

wickette, hmscott, IKAS V and 1 other person like this. -
@Derek712 heres the results, no undervolts applied, default clocks, BestBuy model, stock paste.
MSI Turbo mode, Cooler Boost fan profile. score 12,9XX (forgot to look)
Here is with Auto fan profile, again no undervolts. score 12,615
-
I actually lowered my six core torso multiplier to 34, and with a custom fan profile and a -.140 core and cache undervolt, I get 13k firestrike with max temp of 79C, stock thermal paste and pads (not sure if I have the skill to take this thing apart, with it’s flipped motherboard)
-
That’s awesome - no repaste needed. Take that BGA haters.

Hi.
Have anyone checked how many PCIe lanes the thunderbolt port is?
With rumours of nvidia 11XX series coming out this year i was thinking i'd get an eGPU for gaming at home and rocking the internal 1060 when im traveling.hmscott likes this. -
Well, I’m sorry man, but I travel with my laptop, and the non-BGA ones are fat and heavy. Sure, upgrade ability is nice, but if I can easily get 13,000 in firestrike, I’m fine. The only worry I had when I got the laptop was thermals, and I was easily able to fix it, only dropping my firestrike by ~75, and maintain gaining temps under 73 for both cpu and gpu. By the time I actually need an upgrade, I’ll just upgrade my desktop.alaskajoel, sk3tch and hmscott like this.

#1 wasn't talking about your post nor anything you said.
#2: BGA has its place. It IS useful. But NOT in desktop replacements (DTR's) or anything performance related.
The VERY BEST BGA cpu's are equal to the WORST LGA CPU's of the same tray (7820HK->7700K, 8950HK->8700K, etc). And the vast majority are substantially worse in bin level and quality.Papusan likes this. -
Oh, I wasn’t meaning to attack you or anything, it’s just for the next couple of years, I’m moving around too much for a desktop, so I was just stating my opinion. Wasn’t going after you or anything.

How the hell did they get 7 hours of battery while playing video? I get 4.5 while idle with my best attempt to optimize settings (according to batteryinfoview)
-
I think the next upgrade of this, the GS66/68 is almost certainly going to have the exact same screen but just that it will be gsync certified and have a hardware switch (like the zephyrus M) to switch between discrete gpu (gsync) mode and optimus
-
No idea, from what I read the energy managment and power saving features on the MSI GS65 are still faulty.
Battery life should be at ~10h but barely scratches the 6h. -
Your video card might be turning on too much. I had to do a fresh install to keep mine from checking in every 5 minutes. I ran a battery test the other day and got almost 8 house on a video loop.raz8020 likes this.

Please let me know how many of you also have a "curved" screen, mine looks like his, I'm curious if they're all this way. I borrowed Dave2D for the reference lol.
