Yeah after looking into the new blade, it seems like everything I want. But since I already have it in a perfectly working GS65 I figure there is no reason to send it back and get one. I agree the flex is annoying but after realizing how hard I was pressing to make it flex compared to my unibody macbook pro I started to realize the build quality actually is pretty nice. I'm always fly and traveling so this GS65 has been amazing thus far paying my games and staying alive. I hope it lasts for years![]()

I don't see why it wouldn't last, they're still good laptops! It's more of a preference thing for me. Still think the Gs65 is a badass laptop lol. Did you order it with any repast?
-
yeah from ibuypower. it was less than 2100 with a kryonaut repaste and a clean install with their 5% discount. After a cpu undervolt too I'm playing games like Ghost Recon wildlands for hours with max temps of 86 degrees
-
Very nice. Stock paste and undervolt with a clock speed dropped to 3.6ghz, i was still getting well over 80s. I just dont have the courage to disassemble this laptop lolhmscott likes this.

I'm told they're a lot better now if you're referring to support/warranty.Assault likes this. -
Awesome, that's good to hear. There's nothing worse than spending a ton of money on a laptop and having a hard time getting it fixed when a problem occurs lol.
-

The fixed part has always been fine IMO, they do a good job once a tech actually has the machine. -
Razors nice, but my last laptop, a late 2016 Razer, had tons of problems, failed expanding batteries, random bosds, an incredibly slow rma system with poor support (I was missing a screw, so I called support for one, they said 2-3 weeks, got it 4 months later, when battery failed, couldn’t get a new one from Razer so I had to buy one somewhere else), and motherboard fried and computer stopped turning on 2 weeks ago. That’s why I got the gs65. Be careful with razer. Also, similarly specced Razer is 600 dollars more...

Will never forgive the time they replaced my machine 4 times and each one had a different major issue. And then only gave me store credit in the end...

Sorry to hear that man. Can't speak for them but I haven't heard too much of that sort of thing lately.hmscott likes this. -
Sounds like my experience with Alienware, but Dell treated me well with the fixes. Gosh I pray this Razer behaves. ಠ_ಠ

Used to be pretty tricky to get support, never really saw any repeat repairs though. -
Dells have their share of QC issues but I'll give them credit on their customer support. Never had a problem getting stuff repaired and they've even fixed my 2yo xps 15 for free, which was out of warranty.raz8020 likes this.

Guys and Gals...please, this is the MSI GS65 Stealth Owners and Discussions Lounge. Look at the last 10 or so pages.
Please take the Razer Blade 15 discussion to a proper thread, or create one.hfm, Falkentyne, Francesco V. and 3 others like this. -
I don't know about that website, but I can tell you that I'm using an Asus ADP-180MB power supply for my GS65 without any issue. If you search eBay, you can probably find them for $30 each.

Honestly any 5.5x2.5 180 AC adapter should be fine for it. -
Just saw this on Youtube... Does anyone else's laptop have this problem? Sorry if this isn't the place to ask... -
Yes mine did, and is a large portion of why I'm returning mine today. I would say msi went a bit too far with the weight reduction lol. Does your upper clam shell have a sharp edge right there in front of your track pad, where it overlaps the bottom clam?
-
Actually, that specific creaking comes from the wrap around the battery
-
It's a bit pointy yeah... Do keep us posted on the Razer 15 though, I'm considering returning my GS65 also...
Do you know if it's specific to best buy models? If I remember correctly, @Assault had a best buy model also (Correct me if I'm wrong)... Representatives on here, do you guys know anything about that?Assault and BourbonAndIce like this. -
It's all models. The battery is running against the inside and there are some flimsy plastic brackets underneath. I'm almost positive this can be corrected with a couple pads and some 3m double sided tape. Next time I do a teardown, I'll give it a go.

I'm so unlucky that they finally delivered the first GS 65s in Italy... But the provider of my store didn't took the right amount of laptops preordered, so I'm still waiting for it LOL

Dude, no reason to open a new thread. Like it or not, discussion of competing laptops is relevant because many folks are within their return window.

My favorite upgrade took me a long time. It was very difficult and I will post a guide with full YouTube video soon.
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-15-6-Inch-Laptop-Sleeve-Black/dp/B00CD8AFT8/
It took me a lot of time to slide the laptop into the sleeve without resistance. Once inside the sleeve, I was able to enjoy protection for my GS65 from harmful dust and potential random stranger punches to my laptop. -
How can I get my 3.5 mm headphones to be detected as a headphone audio device? Cause right now it just played speaker sound through the headphones and it’s deafening. USB headsets are detected as a headset and an external microphone
Last edited: May 25, 2018 -
try right-clicking your sound icon on the taskbar, then left click Sounds, click the Playback tab, and on the device you're trying to use: highlight and select "set default" on the bottom of the window.
-
It’s not that headphones aren’t default. It’s that’s there is no headphone device
-
Is it connected via the dedicated port or do you have a single connection for both headphones and mic? You may need a splitter. I used one for my single connection mic/headphones.
-
its a single unified jack that i put in the headphone output 3.5mm port. i know the mic wont work without a spkitter. im gettting one if those. but there is no headohone device when its plugged in, so it has speaker volume. i have to turn the audio down to <10, and >20 is deafening
-
Do you have an external volume control on your headset you can adjust? Might be too high. I keep windows audio at 30 and adjust volume on my headset.
-
no, thered no external volume control. i just dont get why theres no headphone device. does a unified jack need a splitter to be recognized as a device?
-
Alright! So my GS65 just arrived and no creaking =)
I'm a total newbie, but since the CPU is running quite warm so I'll try to undervolt both CPU and GPU. Are Intel XTU or Throttlestop the best tools for this, and just follow a random guide on youtube. My concern is, if I get bluescreen, will the computer be able to restart again as usual or is there any specific button to press when trying to start it up again?
It's a GTX1060 version, fyi
Eg using this guide that someone posted here ( https://www.reddit.com/r/laptops/comments/8kij4p/msi_gs65_hot_games_cool_temps_and_you_a_guide/) =)robohgedhang and ixixmmx like this. -
use throttlestop, this youtube video explains most of it

Trying to figure this out. My "Offset voltage" "range" is set to "125mV" but in the movie he has it set to "250mV", Same goes for the guide on reddit. Should I change mine to 250mV aswell or just leave it at "125mV"? And how do I know if bluescreen occurs, will I be able to wake my computer up again?
Regards -
No need for put the Offset voltage range to more than 125mv if you don't need higher voltage offset. If you run into Bsod, you will get one of those nice blue images on your screen. The machine will reboot and start up with voltage set in bios. If you a put too low voltage in Throttlestop Default profile and put it as scheduled task then you can risk a new Bsod or freezes when it start up again.
This means you will need to boot up in Windows safe mode, delete ThrottleStop.ini file in your TS FOLDER and then reboot your pc... This will force ThrottleStop to create a new configuration file when it starts up again and it will read the current state of your CPU for its default values. Then add in new voltage values you know it's safe.Last edited: May 26, 2018 -
So I've factory reset my GS65 like 6 times now. I've used the Windows "restore my PC" method, as well as the method via creating a USB stick with MSI's Software. I removed the bottom and ensured the speaker's cable connection was secure. I've reinstalled the drivers dozens of times, and ONCE, randomly, I had given up and loaded up a game just to fart around for a bit, and randomly, without reason, the sound started working. From both speakers. It worked for about 20 minutes, then I had to go, so I closed the lid. When I came back, no more sound again. And now the long drawn out process of sending it back to excaliberpc and waiting , waiting , waiting. I should have just bought it from BestBuy and picked up a faster SSD later. At this point I would have brought it in to the store, complained, and walked out with another one.

Cheers! I'll guess I cross "OK - save voltages immediately" but skip scheduled task until I find the critical value. Thanks for all the help. I'll post my findings tomorrow =)!
-
Or just create scheduled task. Checkmark one of the 4 default profiles in TS options who will contain a profile with default voltage who always will start up safe in windows. Use one of the other 3 power profiles for your testing. You have 4 power profiles in TS.

Just ordered the GTX1070/512GB SSD best buy model at the store. They were supposed to have held it for me while I drove 2.5 hrs to go pick it up, but someone sold it so they ordered me another one discounted at $1799 for the inconvenience. So may have been worth the wait.
I've been browsing through this and am a little concerned about the temps. I'll try undervolting if necessary, but not opposed to reapplying thermal paste. Has there been any comparisons done reapplying with AS5? -
Just finished my order and put it in today. @Donald@HIDevolution was truly amazing with helping me come up with a system. I am sure I asked him 400 questions and he always came through and answered. I went back and forth with several systems and even a MacBook Pro but ended up with what you see in my signature.

Updated to new bios release in May, version E16Q2IMS.10A, I think they did some changes to C state, it shows C8 in ThrottleStop, it was C10 when I got the laptop in April, not sure what this means tho, faster draining on battery?

Greetings everyone,
What is the thickness of the thermal pads for this machine? -
For anyone that's been monitoring their temperatures, are cores 0 and 2 the hottest CPU cores for anyone else? I'm wondering how consistent it is from system to system.
Falkentyne likes this. -
Some are .5mm and others are 1.25mm. The 1.25mm are squishy so you could probably replace them with 1mm and be fine.Timothy Mitchell likes this.

Please do a search on this. This has been discussed many times and first discovered by yours truly.
Multiple problems:
Convex heatsink
MOSFET pad thickness amplifying problems.
Less pressure on cores 0+2 than cores 1+3 because of above mentioned problems. (cores 0 and 2 are closest to MOSFETS)
Some people wind up with 10-20C core temp differentials because of this.
Three people did their own fixes to this. @Shehary, @Ivan994 and @GENOCID
All involving sanding and reducing pad thickness.
And i know some people say VRM's absolutely need thermal pads.
But MSI 16L13 does not have ANY thermal pads on their CPU VRM's. Something to think about.
But it is always good to keep them cool. This is important for voltage stability.
Only fix is to reduce thermal pad thickness and sand heatsink down flat. You are very clever and smart for noticing this and questioning it. +Rep for you. Most people just accept things and don't think outside the box. The people who question the status quo are the ones who get things done. -
I got mine in a few days ago and finally had a chance to mess with it a bit. Overall, the "flimsy chassis" and thin panels are a non issue for me. It's definitely not rock solid like my Macbook Pro, but the one I got makes no creaking sounds at all. The flex in the palm rest is only noticeable when pressing down on it fairly hard. It reminds me of the iPhone 6/7 "bendgate" when it first launched. Will it bend if you make it? Yes. Has mine bent in the 1.5 years i've had it? No. Pictures and videos don't do the GS65 justice. IMO, its a beautiful machine (once all the stickers are removed from the palmrest).
I purchased from HID Evolution with the LM/Fujipoly upgrade, along with a few other additions you can see in my sig. The only negative I have to say so far is that the bottom panel is missing a screw, however, I emailed @Donald@HIDevolution about it and am sure it will be taken care of.
I've made a few adjustments in Throttlestop:

CPU/GPU Temps:

Interesting, thanks for that. Think maybe I should just try and replace the MOSFET pads with k5 pro and see what happens?

I use 0.5mm thermal pads (Arctic 0.5mm). But that's on a heatsink base structured like this:
As far as I know, this exact base configuration has been used ever since the GT72s, all the way up to the GT75 Titan. Convex copper block and all.
I don't know about the GS65 stealth. Far too lazy to look at a disassembly video of it with all the stress I've been under lately.
