I am considering applying Thermal Grizzly's conductonaut liquid metal thermal compound, and I just want to make complete sure the heatsinks in the laptop is not made out of aluminium. Would anyone happen to know for sure?![]()

Pretty much everything she was referring to as fragile is fragile in all laptops. Aluminum is easy to scratch and bend. And all those connectors are easy to break if you try and force them in the wrong direction. Just be careful and take your time and you'll be fine. An ifixit screwdriver repair set will be your best friend for this (and for many future projects).

Send @Donald@HIDevolution a shout out in a post, he will then PM you, and based on my experience he will indeed help you out with a discount. He's been super helpful and responsive for me. Hi Donald, can I add your teardown video in the 1st post of this topic? Thank you

That looks pretty doable with the right equipment

Edit: is the 1060 version of the laptop 1060 Max-Q variant or base variant?
Also is there any chance I can OC this GPU with the thermal upgrade to get similar to GTX 1070 Max-Q version performance levels?
The 1060 SKU fits my budget better and I can get the 512GB SSD and I can always use the eGPU method to get more performance later down the line
The games I play are Stellaris, Civ 6, KSP, Guild Wars 2, Minecraft, Cities Skylines etc I also have a PS4 and a switch

I currently own a GTX 1060 laptop (Razer Blade v5) and owned one prior to this one (GS43VR) - the 1060 is a beast for 1080p gaming, and I primarily play the demanding ARK: Survival Evolved. I am opting for 1070 Max-Q simply to try out an upgrade. The 11 series will be out later this year, anyway - so that will be another upgrade for me (new laptop, I know these are not upgradeable). For the games you play - the 1060 will be great.
The 1060 normal is only about 10-20% slower than the 1070 Max-Q.candyninja32 likes this. -
If thats the case, is there going to be any option to configure the GS65 with the 1070 with 2x4gb ram and a slower ssd for cheaper costs? Also what would the Logo Option do for the GS65 since the base model doesn't have leds on the logo.
-
you can downgrade to 1x16GB RAM and 128GB SATA SSD to reduce costs at the HID website.
-
-
depends really, 5-10% performance decrease in some games and apps like 5-15 fps in games decrease for single channel and tiny bit slower loading times. but its cheaper to upgrade later but it seems upgrading is a ***** in this laptop.
-
While upgrading this laptop is tedious, it should be possible with relative ease. I inserted a second M.2 NVMe drive with no guides and no tools other than a screwdriver. The laptop works fine so far

Where did you buy it from? Any paste/etc. upgrades? How are temps? My HIDEvolution order just hit "In Production" so it should ship by tomorrow.
-
In Production! I'm jealous lol. I'm in Pre-Production.
Sk3tch, did you opt to get the Grizzly Thermal and pads, what model did you end up choosing?Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
Sounds like we have the same model, same upgrades. Ordered on 4/27 - stock other than the best paste/pads option. My first dice roll with an authorized reseller. We shall see!JetFn1 likes this.

Since i don't live in the U.S., I don't get to order customized branded laptops and will have to do upgrades myself. Everything (except SSD 2) is stock so the CPU will idle at high 30s and reach mid 40s under moderate use. It can reach 90C under heavy load if the bottom surface of the laptop is directly touching the surface it's sitting on, but I've had it sit around mid 80s during the same work with a coolerpad and an undervolt. The GPU usually stays around 81 - 84C under load i think. I would hope the CPU temps drop to the low 80s and maybe even high 70s with the Thermal Grizzly paste but that would have to be a summer project as I want to know what I'm doing before actually applying highly electrical conductive paste close to a circuit board
Hope you enjoy yours from the good people at HIDevolution, this laptop is awesome
-
Can anyone comment on how the touchpad for this device is? I've previously owned a GS60 and the touchpad gave me nightmares. If I slowly moved my finger across, the pointer would move in a staircase path. Is this one better? How is the click? Is it stiff?
-
I'm hoping for the same #s with the new thermals. Once I receive the laptop I'll post the temps on the forum for everyone to check out. I'm hoping I can overclock the GPU to stock 1070 desktop performance and be a couple degrees under the stock model unit with stock thermals.TheGhastSlayer likes this.

It is the full nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, not the Max-Q
You can OC it, but your mileage may vary as to whether it will perform at the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q levels. -

The only options available at this time are on our website. However we do expect to get more SKUs from MSI in the next month or so.
Yes, we should take the logo backlight option off of the GS65 -
@Donald@HIDevolution can you confirm you received the next shipment that was due May 4th (that contains my order)?

I can’t wait to see mine move from pre-production to shipped. I’ve been using a HP envy running the gtx 930m for the past 4 years so this will be a magnificent upgrade.
-
do you think there will be a gs75? I want this (and i've ordered it) but I've been playing on a 17in for so long I wonder if it'll be a huge impact on gaming for me or I should wait for the gs75. Really can't decide
-
New Nvidia Notebook GPU expected to be delivered in Q4 2018
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Nvidi...0.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook
So, should I buy the GS65 right now, or it's better to wait for Christmas to buy a GS65 with the new Nvidia GPU generation? -
I actually opted for waiting the next generation of GPU's at this point and hold on to my AW 17 R4. Hopefully, there will be more bezelless machines with gtx 1170 / 2070 Max-Q on them (Imagine a GTX 2070 MAX-Q stronger than a full spec 1070).
Trying to decide between an Aero 15x and a MSI GS65 is kinda awkard in 2018. I think laptop manufacturers got the smell of "Dell XPS Pie" share of the market and i think gamers who are now past 25-30 of age (kidults as they call it
got really tired of childish looking ugly laptops (which i also own one) without any sign of class. Thats why they are leaning towards these XPS-like gaming kidult machines, and i am quite sure that we are going to see more of them soon. Design choice of MSI GS65 is a really strong proof of this IMO. And since the max-q design is relatively new, i am hoping that other manufacturers are taking their time to create slim & thin & light laptops while taking advantage of the max-q design.
I hope we also see a 17.3'' machine in a 15.6'' chassis as well in the near future. One can only hope. -

~How soon do u think the next gen gpus are gonna come out from NVIDIA?~
Edit: nvm I see it’s answered above damn that seems really close
I use this laptop currently

So Like this will be massive upgrade for me anyway and I’m itching for one

I hope everyone knew new GPUs were coming Q3/Q4 before they ordered...heh. My plan has always bee
Portability is paramount for me, and I always knew Q3/Q4 would see new mGPUs (buy, use it, eBay it, upgrade - that's how tech works). I hope we continue to see beast laptops around the 4lb size. The rest are just a joke. Get a desktop. -
I can't imagine Nvidia rushing out the next gen. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets pushed to 2019. What motivation do they have when they can barely keep the current gen cards in stock?
-
I would love a 17inch version, for my wife. The only real downside I find in the 65 is the lack of numpad, other than that, it is an idea, thin portable laptop. But I don't think there are plans for a GS75, at least not yet.JetFn1 likes this.
-
That's not really the case anymore - just today MicroCenter sent me an email with NVIDIA GPUs for retail price ("on sale" gasp). Pascal has also lasted longer than any other generation. All thanks to mining.
It's easy to push aside the fact that new mGPUs are coming if you are in the laptop selling business. If you are in the reality business - they are coming, and it is this year - Q4 at the latest.Donald@Paladin44 and hmscott like this. -
No numpad was a huge plus. I do not want off kilter typing. Get a USB numpad.
JetFn1 and Donald@Paladin44 like this. -
We all have different uses. I don't like laptops without numpads as I do use it. It has never been an issue for me when a laptop sports, it, and to the contrary, it has always been a detriment when it doesn't have it.
I never felt typing was weird with the layout though I see what you mean. Having a USB pad is an option, but I don't like depending on USB accesories to use the laptop on the go or general usage. Keep in mind I use my laptop for more than gaming. And lately, I don't even game on it at all hahaha.
Anyways, while I did suffer the lack of numpad with my GT80 (that thing was worse than a USB numpad, almost never used it) at least I can somewhat survive without it. But my wife is a designer and removing it makes it all worse.Donald@Paladin44, raz8020, Spartan@HIDevolution and 1 other person like this. -

IMO, the keyboard layout is a nice improvement over past MSI laptops, and the overall redesign is more eyecatching than the competing Gigabyte Aero 15/15x. Better battery life than other MSI laptops is also a big improvement, given MSI's poor record in this aspect.
I too would like to see an MSI GS75, as it would add something to the nearly non-existent 17 inch thin and light laptop market, besides the current GS73. Thin bezels would make a 17 inch variant of the GS65 stand out even more.Donald@Paladin44 likes this. -
We don't know if any 17" screen exists with those thin bezels at 144HZ, like I don't believe any current laptop has such a screen, I feel this is the only component preventing MSi to release a GS75Donald@Paladin44 likes this.

I was thinking about what GPUs will be the first to be announced in the notebook environment... Faster models first? Slowest first? Last 2 generations followed the 1st hypothesis, in fact x60 and x70 were delivered first, but previous generations didn't follow this route.
Probably I'm going to buy this laptop when available, and then eventually exchanging with a faster model... or probably the difference between a 1070 Max-Q and a 2070 Max-Q won't be remarkable so I'll keep this one LOL.candyninja32, Donald@Paladin44 and sk3tch like this. -
Wanted to clarify the memory in the best buy sku gs65-037. I bought it and it is dual channel 2 8 gig sticks. Very happy with it so far. Only difference from other skus is it has m2 ssd rather than nvme but for the savings i am real happy. It looks even better in person. Also not noticing a ton of flex keyboard deck feels good to me
Also best buy has them in stock i picked up in person today no pre-orderDonald@Paladin44 and hmscott like this. -
I'm trying to order this magnificent beast but I can't come to grips on what configuration I want.
Is liquid metal a must on the GS65 to get past throttling? Currently I have 2 configurations one from 2 different resellers exact spec but literally a $200 difference just for liquid metal (and possibly better support) because of the other upgrades are so high in price comparatively.
i.e. how are the temps in the GS65 from LM compare to high end thermal compounds that aren't LM?Donald@Paladin44 likes this. -
What SKU are you trying to order ?
Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkDonald@Paladin44 likes this. -
It's basically the 54 vs. 53 (speced them out to be roughly the same as I don't need Windows 10 Pro that comes with 53). In fact the 54 might be slightly better considering the 960 evo 500gb that replaced the stock ssd.
Even if I matched the SKUs to 53 each it's still a $140 difference just for LM.Donald@Paladin44 likes this.
