I've read it in a couple reviews. I'm hoping there's a fix, because that would be a deal breaker for me.
-
I don't think you have to worry about it, even if there is an issue, its probably a very isolated number of laptops that probably came from the same factory. I'm sure any new one is fine.
-
If you're referring to the engadget review, I think it's an issue in synaptics. Turn the sensitivity to 0 in PalmCheck under mouse device settings and it shouldn't do it any more.
-
Well, hopefully that's all it was.
Just for the sake of absolute clarity, could one of you GT70 users try holding down a key, then see whether you can move the mouse cursor with the touchpad.? -
GT60-2OC here, touchpad gets disabled when I press a key. Haven't tried changing anything in synaptics though.
-
I believe it's the default setting. I don't have my GT70 (or 60 not sure yet) so I can't check myself. Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Mouse > Device Settings (With a red and white swirly logo for synaptics). Once you're in the Synaptics touch pad settings. Go to Pointing > Sensitivity > Touchpad > PalmCheck then move the bar down to minimum. I had to do this with my previous notebooks with synaptics.
If I'm correct, it should remedy the issue, if not, there's definitely a bug. -
Synaptics allows you to control whether this happens. Download the latest version of synaptics from their website. My laptop did not come with the latest version. The current version allows more control over gestures used with windows 8.

I will try to confirm this later with my GT60. It's annoying even though I understand why they did it. Since I rarely use the touchpad, I hadn't noticed it much.
-
I can confirm turning palmcheck to minimum resolves the issue on the gt70. With setting at minimum it allows you to use the touchpad when key is pressed so touchpad can be used when gaming.
-
Now I too am a GT70 2OD 064US owner! Excited, haha! Haven't had much time to use it, just some twenty minutes. Great first impressions, but the screen looks a bit dirty almost, as if it was a little bit wet. Might just be me not used to a matte screen?
-
I thought that was the case.
Thank you very much Dave

has anyone got the new NVidia 320.49 beta drivers to install?. on the nvidia website it says it supports the 780m but wont install for me. its says "graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware"
-
Same problem, doesn't detect my 770m.
-
Yeah i was wondering the same thing, some guy stated his 3dmark score went from 7280 to 7600 with the new drivers, a small increase, but at least according to nvidias website, the drivers do support the new 700m series.
-
New here.. Just bought the 1763 Whitebook w/ GTX780M from GentechPC. Ken was SUPER - DUPER nice
-
Anyone know if there are any 'internal' differences between the whitebook vs. MSI branded. Aside from the touch-pad, keyboard, and mSata... Perhaps I should create my own thread...
-
I have been stalking this forum for a while.. Finally joined, now that I've bought one (whitebook). My old G74 died.. Anyhoo, looking forward to learning and sharing experiences with you all. Please don't kick me out because I have a whitebook. Not as rich as you fine folks!
-
I do see the v320.49 BETA drivers on Nvidia's site for the 780m.
Will download and try them in a bit.
{EDIT} Confirmed, this driver won't install on the MSI -
Anyone know the easiest way to hit up Nvidia and ask them whats going on?
*****UPDATE
Ok all. Had our Nvidia guy from out studio call Nvidia. Now on the site you can actually select the 780m and the 770m and it linked you to the driver. Can anyone test this newly posted driver? Dont set it to BETA, set it to all and use the driver finder drop down.
Does that one work?? -
Welcome aboard man! Glad to see you join the forces of MSI! There is also a Barebone Owner's lounge if you want to hang in there too
Don't worry, us MSI owners hang around all places
I believe there are mostly cosmetic differences, and maybe the amount of mSata devices you can use on the barebone. Other than that, you should have near identical everything! -
So my GT70 is currently in production and should be shipped in about a week. I was wondering what programs I should get first to test that everything n my laptop is there and working? Such as temps, SSD's working, Ram, problems?
Any suggestions guys? -
Thank you!! I'm just concerned with the driver updates / bios. Hopefully someone will figure out a way to safely flash bios / ec (msi versions) onto the whitebooks without any side effects.
(Wishful thinking...)
-
Check out the very first post in this thread .... lot's of goodies listed there to throw at your new GT70 when it arrives
....And by all means, do uninstall some of the bloatware that comes pre-installed on the laptop. There's not a lot of it, but you'll certainly want to take care of the main stuff like Norton etc... -
When i set it to certified drivers it says no driver found. Checked on uk site. Only the beta is available.

Yes the BETA is the only one they have available right now. But what happens when you install it? Does the error go away?
Just want to see if that posted beta works. Mine wont come in till next week so im still waiting for it!
Side question - I have mine coming from powernotebooks (non msi their version of this notebook) but it wont have an OS installed.
I NEED to use windows 7 for custom software I use but was wondering...I heard that some people were having issue with clean installing windows 7. Does that only affect the MSI one or both the MSI and the MSI barebone one?
Thanks! -
Beta will not install. Modded inf needed.

Ok I hit up Nvidia. Being looped into level 2 techs.
My guess is its just a "whoops we forgot to add the new hardware ID kinda thing"
so hopefully soon. -

NICE jamiee!
I just got a tracking notice, and my notebook will be back from Ken's tomorrow. Can't wait to try out those Plextor M5M's, and the 4900MQ!
-
Looking forward to your review
I think I'm going to hold off on upgrading the mSATA's for now (unless there's THAT much of an improvement over the stock SanDisk's), and possibly look at upgrading the CPU to a 4900MQ and RAM to 1866MHz.
Neither is likely worth the money invested, but I like the idea of having a fully stocked (or near to it) Dragon2
Fact is - the stock Dragon2 is already a beast! -
4900MQ? Wow! that's a beast! Ken sent mine today, but didn't get the tracking notice yet... I guess I'm worthy yet.. Perhaps it's a punishment for buying a whitebook lol!
Congrats! I'd love to see the benchmarks on 4900MQ Keep us posted!! -
I would love to upgrade to higher CPU in the future. This a replacement for my broken G74. I run a lot of emulation. Very CPU intensive.....
-
Really hanging out for one of these, but holding off on the purchase purely because I don't want the USB 3.0 bug. My computer sleeps a lot and I do sometimes leave a USB HDD plugged in.
-
Good deal. I've been a lonely 4900MQ owner over here for a few days now. It has 6 unlocked multis for a total of 4.2Ghz across all cores, but I can't seem to get it to be stable or actually work in a game. I can get it to clock to 4.0 across 4 cores using XTU, but it immediately clocks down to 3.7Ghz when placed under load like gaming or benching. I am at a loss of where to go from here. Hopefully you can help!
-
Be ware about the 1866Mhz RAM, we tried the Corsair Vengeance CL9 8GB stick and it doesn't work. The Kingston 1600MHz HyperX with 1.35v works fine.
-
That's good to know....
I was planning to go with Vengeance 1866Mhz CL10 8GB sticks (guess not now).
Thanks Ken :hi2: -
If you all were doing the barebones of this beast and wanted to get the most performance out of your money, what would you upgrade on it? Say 2600$ budget... CPU and monitor? is stock monitor fine? It's mostly a gaming comp, but do some video editing/converting/rendering as well. I was looking at doing the super raid2, but seems like it's not worth it.
-
I just priced it out on GenTech and with the 4900MQ, 3 year warranty (it looks like you like to keep your tech for awhile), IC diamond, no dead pixels, 256GB 840 Pro, 750GB 7200RPM Storage HDD, BluRay Reader Combo Drive, and Win 8 it came to $2659.
Or swap the warranty and get the screen upgrade. I have the stock screen and its great. -
Just my opinion, upgrading to an all SSD system makes the biggest improvement. If you use that much storage I would consider a 500gb ssd over the processor upgrade.
-
Cool, thanks for the input guys. I would probably lean toward the CPU upgrade over a larger SSD since I can easily upgrade SSD later if needed and CPU is a bit more intensive to upgrade I imagine ha. I do keep my system for quite some time (my work lets me get one every 3 years).
Very interested to see how MSI is compared to Sager. Consensus seems to be it's quite a bit better overall
Hmmmmm, just need to get bosses approval and they are gone for 2 weeks.
Edit: just to be sure ;P - so say 2x 840 Pro in Raid 0 would not be as noticeable as the 4900 vs the 4700 in terms of performance gained? I mean I suppose I can do that later anyway, but just for my own curiosity, what do you think would be more noticeable?
Oh and also, what do you guys think of barebones vs the stock model tweaked? Guess its a bit more once u had the 840 Pro tho =/ -

The stock screen is actually not bad, and I would recommend trying it, before deciding on an added upgrade expense. Most find the screen wholly acceptable, and you can always swap the screen later, should you see fit. As to Super RAID 2, this is MSI's marketing speak for three (3) SSD's in a RAID0 configuration, which is available to us courtesy of Intel's HM87 chipset. What is cool about this is how MSI achieves this...... with 3 mSATA SSD's plugged to a single adapter, and only occupying a single (primary) drive bay. This leaves the remaining drive bay (secondary) optional to your discretion. Most then are satisfied using the secondary for a 'Data' HDD, but some are installing yet a 4th SSD. It's always nice to have options.
Is Super RAID 2 worth it? I think so, and it offers performance levels 30 to 50% over a dual drive RAID0 configuration. I like it and I even went so far as to upgrade my mSATA SSD's.
Now as to a barebones $2600 configuration, I will remain somewhat reserved. Loads of folks here will offer their opinions, but you know what they say about opinions, right? I realized you are seeking input and ideas, but ultimately you will buy what you want, and can afford.
I will say this however..... take care when buying barebones units. Research to a point that you fully understand, exactly what you are getting for your money. Barebones units can vary in bios, EC firmware, hardware, software, build quality, build material, aesthetics, and warranty...... and this is generally the case. Is SuperRAID 2 even an option for barebones units? Will they be equipped with the triple mSATA SSD adapter? For now this seems to be a bit of a mystery, because info varies amongst resellers. Anyhow. difference may vary only slightly between branded or barebones, but all should be considered nonetheless. Better safe, than later sorry. Are you willing to sacrifice things, such as warranty, and can you purchase an equally configured 'MSI' branded unit for near equal cost? Some of the custom building resellers will trim hardware (an HDD, mem sticks, etc.) to reduce your cost. For me, the factory MSI warranty coverage alone makes branded units more appealing.
The top-tier MSI branded Dragon 2 Edition, at $2699, is not far off your budget..... and this configuration will aptly meet the needs you've outlined above. Lesser priced branded models can be seen HERE.
Just a little food for thought, and good luck in your decision.
-
Thanks -=$tR|k3r=- , I appreciate your input. I didn't realize that there could be other differences besides the shell from the barebones from the branded MSI.. I will keep researching and comparing my options I guess... I am a ADD about this lapto--- squirrel. It's like ohh this could be cool, ohh maybe this, ohh but this and then I am lost again lol.

OH GAWD, my new Plextor M5M SSD's are butt-kick;in FAST!!!
UPS dude just dropped it off, and Ken did a marvelous job with my upgrades.
I haven't had time to test anything yet, but after initial WIN 8 set-up, I shut 'er down, and rebooted. From power button to WIN 8 start screen, it seemed as though it only took about 6-8 seconds. Ken did a factory load on the new SSD's, so I'll do testing after I am finished updating, and setting the notebook up to my liking. Also, I noticed WIN 8 shut-down was near instantaneous, and the new Intel wireless-AC card connects immediately. Of course I have a lot more to do, but it's looking really SWEET so far.
-
Ended up ordering 32GB of the HyperX 1600Mhz CL9 (1.35v) RAM
and an Intel 7260 wireless AC / Bluetooth card.
Would have liked 1866Mhz RAM, but Ken's statement about the Vengeance 1.5v memory not working with the new GT70's seems to indicate the need to stick with lower voltage modules. -
Can you bench those 3 little monsters Striker? I am very curious how they perform
-
Good to hear about the new Intel wireless-AC card. Mine is on back-order, but shouldn't be too long.
I'll install it when I install the new RAM.
Interesting observation with your new Plextor mSATA's... was your GT70 slower to boot before with the stock drives?
I only ask because even with the stock SanDisk X100's, my Dragon2 has always booted and shut down very quickly.
The average measured boot time for my unit is 6 seconds from power on to the Windows 8 LOCK screen.
Shut down is around 4-5 seconds.
I've impressed more than a few people by how quick the laptop powers on and off
BTW, does anybody know how to enable AHCI for the secondary (data) drive?
I looked around in the BIOS but don't see the ability to enable this mode for that drive.
(doesn't really matter much anyway because the Samsung 840 pro is already a smok'n fast drive). -
I have an msi gt 70 onc laptop with a TSSTcorp DVDWBD SN-406AB blu ray drive. The drive does function as i am able to read cds however i am unable to read blank discs and blu rays even with the proper software to do so. i have tried to find alternative driver software and contacted msi for support the latter suggested that i do a clean install. i however know that this problem was with me from the start.
help me your my only hope -
Hi all
I was wondering if you could help? Received my GT70 GTX780M MSI yesterday and a couple of things are concerning me, the Hybrid power utility seems to be problematic as I cant click any of the drop down arrow buttons to change the settings to turn it on? I know it has an auto overclock, but is this activated by the hybrid power or does it do this automatically? Am I being daft here or is there a problem? This hybrid Power utility isnt on the disc, and I have tried to find it to reinstall?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks in advance -

Yeah, those Sandisk X100's are plenty fast..... much improved over the older U100's. I am getting about the same boot times with the Plextor SSD's, with 5 to 6 seconds from power button to WIN 8 'Start' screen..... and about 4 to 5 seconds shut-down. Here's my HD Tune Pro 5.50 scores:
SanDisk X100's
Plextor M5M's
I didn't run CrystalDiskMark on the X100's, but here is the M5M's:
I'll do the same with PC Mark 8 as soon as it's available. For comparison, would you mind running CDM (select '5' test runs) on your X100's?
Thanks!
