Guys are you downloading the nvidia driver from the nvidia website? The only time i had the problem of unrecognized hardware is when i was trying to install the desktop version of the driver. Make sure that you have the notebook version and it should recognize the graphic card.

This is for anyone needing (typically) to dump WIN8 on this notebook; these are the steps I used
*Be sure to go into System Properties > Device Manager and note Network Adapters.
*Download the WIN7 drivers from MSI (see first post this thread)
*Go into BIOS (tap DEL after power-on) and disable UEFI and switch to Legacy BIOS.
*Make sure your WIN7 ISO disc(k) is inserted.
*Save new BIOS setting and start from CD.
*I deleted ALL partitions - not sure if saving any is beneficial - I have the MSI driver CD and a WIN8 ISO so didn't matter to me.
*After WIN7 install the first driver should probably be video stuff - after installing the on-board GPU I disabled it and then installed the NVIDIA drivers. Before doing this NVIDIA kept warning I needed to install an Intel driver. JEEESH!
By the way I installed the latest beta NVIDIA drivers. -
Embarrassing confession time - this. It prefilled everything else on the driver page so I (incorrectly) assumed that it was correct. Not so!
-
Your hardware ID must equal NVIDIA_DEV.119F.10EA.1462 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M - it's the only one so far supported for MSI in the latest Nvidia drivers. Check your ID.
OK, trying to install a desktop driver is doomed - except if you edit the inf yourself. -

Lol, it always just put the latest desktop series there ^-^ Time to grab the latest mobile beta. -
Thank you very much! This one really seems to be an attractive package combining performance and acceptable noise levels.
-
OK - so after a bit of testing I think I've settled on the best combination of fan setting and temps, using DP's fan control program (thank you!). 70% on the fan control seems to give the best balance between fan noise and cooling. With the fan set at 75%, I can keep my GPU temps under 85c, even with the GPU at 100% load and after gaming for approx 30mins.. There is quite a difference in noise between 70% and 80% fan. (80% is what the "fast" fan speed setting uses in DP's program). My temps are all on stock paste btw.
-
Well this sytem has Optimus technology so the 'VGA adapter' shouldn't be listed like that. It should be the Intel graphics card. I'm guessing if you find the drivers for the Intel adapter (Intel Graphics 4600 is listed for the i7-4700) that the Nvidia would install fine.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes, once you have installed it you should see HD4600 and the GTX780M both listed.

My laptop has been running great since I purchased it but today it just froze and I had to restart it (not the first time its just froze on me). After restarting my boot up times have gone up significantly, every time restarting the computer and waiting for windows 8 to load completely takes considerably longer now
Running windows 8, Any advice will be appreciated? -
The first thing to check on freezes is memory and HDD (if you're running a mechanical HDD). Running tests on those 2 things is where I would start. Best program to run memory tests with is memtest86+. There's a bunch of HDD testing programs to choose from. Either use the one that the HDD manufacturer supplies or HDTune is a good overall tester. HDTune looks to have a trial version you can run for 15 days.

Ordered myself a GT70 2OD-064US last night. Thanks to Amazon Prime I'll have it tomorrow.
Also ordered a Crucial M500 960GB to go in it as well. -
Congrats Kevin with finally a new computer. Let us know what you think about it when you get it
I think you will be impressed with the keyboard, the sound system and the performance. -
Any 4900MQ GT70 owners looking to overclock? I've managed to get stable some results. This info might be useful for GT70 users too since they are basically the same machine..
I can now hold 3.9Ghz 4 cores 4.0ghz 2 cores and 4.1Ghz stable. Trick is not to overvolt the core, but undervolt it so you keep within TDP limits and the multiplers don't clock down. Thanks. I know it'll be amazing to finally wake up to a new notebook.
I was trying to hold out for the Alienware 17, but I've been waiting so long already and my P170HM is seriously falling apart. I just hit the breaking point. -

Im kinda new to this machine and haven't received yet but I wanted to know how powerfull is this for gaming, sorry for the noob question but I wanted to know if I will be able to change the HDD to SDD in near future and will I be able to re-install the windows 8 to my new SDD without buying new windows. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's going to have as much kick as possible in a single GPU machine really.
Best to ask that sort of question before ordering though usually
-
@ suley - meaker is right, questions about what type of performance to expect should be asked before you buy - now it's kinda a moot question. As to installing the O/S on another media, you should have no problems, because you already have the PID (product id) sticker on the bottom of the unit. The only problem I foresee, which was non-issue for me, is your recovery partition on the stock HDD. I wiped my stock HDD, installed a SSD as primary and am using the stock HDD as secondary. Unfortunately I am experiencing 1-second lockups while playing games, apparently caused by HDD access.
In closing, download the latest WIN8 drivers from the MSI Website, have your PID ready, and you should be good to go. -
What do you guys prefer/think is better.
MSI GT70-2OD 001 w/ 3x 480gb mSATA SSD's + 1tb 5400rpm drive
OR
MSI GT70-2OD 064(?) w/ 1x 1tb Samsung Pro EVO SSD + 1tb 5400rpm
Note: I have back up storage in two desktops + external drives.
Also, is there any significance between msata and non msata version -
I've been noticing this issue with Optimus recently on my GT70. The laptop is constantly switching between the integrated card and the 780m when I'm not running a game. The power button is flickering between orange and white. The light is orange for a few seconds, goes white for half a second, then go back to orange and repeat. Seems ok when in a game and there doesn't seem to be a performance issue. I'm on Windows 8 and running the latest Nvidia beta drivers but only noticed this for the last couple days. Anyone have any idea what might be happening?
-
What do the colors mean? Mine is always orange...
-
Hi, I just got my GT70 20d-039us dragon edition 2...
I am curious....
When purchasing the system it stated that the cpu processing speed was 3.2-3.4 GHz...
The specs on the machine say it is 2.4 GHz...
Why is this? is there something I need to activate in order to achieve the higher clock speed?
I thought maybe there was a turbo boost like my 0ne-446US but it doesn't...
any information will be appreciated. -
3.4ghz is the max turbo boost speed for 4700mq.
With power cable plugged in, press the g button to bring up the scm. set it to gaming mode. it'll then run at 3.2-3.4 ghz (check in windows 8 task manager). -
Do you happen to run MSI Afterburner?
-
Anyone use Nvidia GeForce experience? Is it worth having/using?
-
Thanks soo much for the directions!!! Are there any other tricks I should know about the computer/ performance enhancements? -
when gaming make sure you run the hybrid power utility. if not you may get framerate slow downs if cpu & gpu power usage is high.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
White = dGPU off
Orange = dGPU on -
No, I'm not running MSI Afterburner. I suspect it could be a hardware monitor program I have running on startup that could be causing it. At first I thought it may have been the latest driver since the issue went away after I downgraded, but it showed up again today.
-
Hey guys I am loving this laptop!!! Chewing though 3d programs (maya) and games like saints row 4 no issues. The ONLY issue I have is this.
When hitting the button to disable all wireless (airplane mode) it disables it for just a second then re-enables it right away. No way to keep it off. All the other buttons work (eject, turbo, screen on and off...) but that one just wont work... any ideas? -
$1200 on mSATA SSDs seems like a waste of money. What do you really need the speed for sir?
Wait, what? Orange means the 780M is active? So then why is mine always orange, all the time? -
Background programs that are set to run off the 780m instead of intel gfx will cause the dedicated card to be active. Close programs to find out which ones are using it. You can also right click the exe and change the programs default graphics card.
Another scenario that causes it is if you open a program that utilizes the 780m, and then open say HWMonitor to watch temps. Even though you close the program that triggered the 780m, the light will continue to stay orange and use the 780m until you close HWMonitor. -
Thanks a lot for the mini tutorial. I found that it was Steam.exe which was running on the 780M.

I wonder if somebody could check something for me.
I've just got my MSI GT70 2OD back from MSI Support (its been in twice for them to look at the mSATA RAID speeds - both times returned "fixed", but still running very slow).
I've got the 3 mSATA Super RAID 2, but I'm only getting Read Speeds of 804 MB/s and Writes of 662MB/s.
They have replaced the mSATA PCB board (or so they say), but no change in speeds.
However something I have just spotted, which I'm hoping somebody can confirm for me:
If you open the Intel Rapid Storage Technology app, and look at the 3 drives in your array.
My two mSATA on ports 0 and 1 get SATA Transfer rates of 6GB/s (under advanced)
The final mSATA on port 4 only gets SATA transfer rate of 3 GB/s.
Is this the same on your GT70 2OD?

All 3 drives need to be 6gb/s. Re-install your drivers (try updating the Intel IRST drivers to 12.6.0.1033).
What benchmark software are you using? Crystaldiskmark always has a low score for me but other i.e hdtune show fast speed of 1400mb/s+. -
Well this is odd, on some boots it comes up with 6GB/s for drive 3 - and when it does I get 1000MB/s speeds.
I've just restarted, and its back to 3Gb/s for the 3rd mSATA and now running HDTune, and I'm getting Min: 650MB/s, Max: 807MB/s
https://www.dropbox.com/s/y68b5999lomqt19/HDTune.PNG
I guess this would suggest something is wrong with the port 4 (used by my 3rd mSATA) on my motherboard?
(I've updated to the latest IRST Drivers: 12.8.0.1016)
I'm guessing having one of the ports at 3GB/s makes the whole RAID array run at 3GB/s - so giving me a max of 900MB/s -
I think am finally getting to the bottom of my poor speed issues! (I wish MSI had its been in twice already!)
Restart - and its detected as 6GB/s, and I'm getting 1500MB/s
Restart again - and the 3rd drive drops to 3GB/s and I'm getting 800MB/s

https://www.dropbox.com/s/cdn61msfekuodfi/2013-08-30 1814 HDTune.PNG
Any idea why it would come out as 3GB/s sometimes and 6GB/s others? (its back to 3GB/s now!) -
could still be a driver problem. also newest drivers are not always the best.
try completely uninstalling the raid storage controller from device manager then reboot. -
try completely uninstalling the raid storage controller from device manager then reboot
I'm not sure how to go about doing this, as on uninstall it says it can't because the system drive uses a RAID partition. removing it would mean the drive can't read or write to the system drive!
I'm pretty sure it also just switched from 6GB to 3GBs without a reboot (just leaving the laptop on standby).
--- update it just switched from 6GB/s to 3GB/s in front of my eyes while doing a test!
--- I had the Intel application open, and it said 6GB/s, while the HD tune was running I noticed the drop in speed to the SATA 3GB/s levels, I quick the intel application and reopened, and the value had been changed to 3GB/s, not what I was expecting!
-
-
I also have the Super RAID 2 with 3 SSD´s mSata (Toshiba, not Sandisk), and my speeds range between 1200 and 1400MB/s, never reaches 1500mb.
-
I only get the 1500MB/s in HD Tune, in CrystalDiskMark I only get around 1000MB/s
-

I just reinstalled my OS because of some software errors, and I tried to download the fan control software but the download link is down. Does anyone know where I can grab it? Thanks!

Sorry for my late reply, very busy time at work... Nice to see all those new comments, this forum is full of life
!
All right, so I guess I'm gonna have to play demanding games when I'm alone and less demanding when with my girlfriend. That's OK. So I need good headphones, with mic for online games. Do you guys have any advise ? Whatever the price it's gonna be my first gaming headphones so I want something good !Quokka said: ↑As for the cooler boost - yes it is rather noisy when on. If you wear headphones of have the volume up high you won't notice it too much, especially when gaming, but I can imagine it will annoy your girlfriend. I tend to play less demanding games in the evenings when my wife is sitting on the couch next to me (without cooler boost). Once she is in bed then I'll play the more demanding games with cooler boost on and wearing headphones.Click to expand...
About laptop cooler, do you have advises ? What do you use ?Quokka said: ↑I have an aluminum laptop cooler that I always have my laptop on. I do this mainly to ensure good airflow in the bottom vents. My cooler does have two active fans in it - but to be honest with them on I don't notice that much of a difference in the temps. Certainly don't consider putting this laptop straight onto your lap or the carpet though, as the airflow will not be good.Click to expand...
Yep, good cleaning will be a priority for me ! Thanks for tips.Quokka said: ↑As the poster above says, keep the thing in good condition with regular cleaning. It will help the temps in the long run. As with any consumer electronic product, some people will have problems and some won't. I had all sorts of trouble with my previous Sony laptop, but no issues so far with either of my MSI laptops.Click to expand...
I'm gonna need a good back-bag with protection too, do you know a brandt or a good model with a cover/hull ? -
