The difference is in the turbo speeds and maximum overclock levels. For most things the 47xx series will cope just fine.

It is about 600MHz, and 10W in differences.
    4702HQ is 2.2GHz (3.2GHz), 37W.
    4980HQ is 2.8GHz (4.0GHz), 47W.
Also, someone has to make that decision to put that processor in before such product is made available.

Not sure about ghosting, but with a TN panel I do notice some strange flickering which wasn't seen on my Clevo... One of that places - Server Browser in Battlefield 4.

Hi guys! I am really not sure - BUT this might stand in connection to some wiered BSOD issues I and other people are expreiencing and might be connected to the wlan network driver: http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/747505-msi-gs70-stealth-pro-theard-118.html#post9861537 Please have a look at the Posts No. 1172 and following.

You can also overclock your cpu to 3.6ghz with intel xtu with all 4 cores active. The few mhz won't be so much noticeable but it will allow higher overclocks. Not sure how much exactly but 4900mq could do 4.2-4.4ghz this should do similair overclock.

I have OC on my 4710HQ to 3.5ghz stable when gaming. Yours should do 3.6ghz without problem too. But honestly I don't think its worth it to pay 1000usd more for 4980hq.

Awesome I will look into the Intel xtu program. Thanks for the heads up on that one !

I also read it could be that my turbo boost feature isn't working correctly? I have no idea if that's even possible.

You could check it with on screen display from msi afterburner with hwinfo to have the clock speed monitored while playing a game. it should be 3.4ghz with all 4 cores active.
The cooling of gt72 is really nice so it shouldn't throttle either.

If it isn't getting in the way of everyday use that's more of a your call sort of thing. You may want to use a can of compressed air and blow it out, as something may have gotten lodged into the key. My spacebar was actually sticking which was a showstopper. Used compressed air and did everything I could think of short of attempting to take the key off which I don't think you can. I contacted them through the Warranty site and they setup an RMA. It cost me about $90 to send from Ohio to California. It just depends on where you live and if California is the only place that services our laptops, which I think it is in the states. While I didn't want to spend any more money (short of upgrading the SSD's more) I don't regret sending it in for a repair. As it really is a wonderful laptop. I could have just plugged a usb keyboard into the laptop, but that defeats the purpose of having a laptop. If it where my call I would contact them and go from there. But that's me.

    hi community..!

i just bougth gt72 2qe comes with nvidia driver 344.24 but in the first post says that this drivers is not good..

i began to search the previous one named 344.00 but not found at msi's official website..later i found that drivers for gt72 at some 3rd websites but after a clean install my screen gets vibrated continously so i immediately restart windows in safe mode and uninstall ...the latest driver 347.09 couldnt be overclocked so i dont want that thing.

    somebody gives the link appreciated

So for you the latset driver yould not be overclocked as well?

Microsoft Update installet 344.91 on my rig yesterday. It don`t think the driver is to bad but you can get any nvidia driver from the nvidia download site. I liked 344.75 a lot.

    Best regards

    phila

    P.S.:

Little sorry (only a little) about quoting myself, but I recieved an reply by MSI support yesterday. They tell me that they are aware of the problem...

I meanwhile tried to update to the very latest drivers from Atheros Qualcomm Site, as MSI Download page does not have the latset one. i am curious if this will fix the issue.

As others have said, try cleaning it off specially if the issue was nonexistant before. You should bother MSI and setup warranty if it is something that bothers you greatly. Otherwise, first try troubleshooting and see how it goes.

im happy with the laptop except the screen which is really terrible...!

    Hi guys,

after some BSOD´s in the past (since last GPU driver update) today i got a restart issue (system shutdown after BSOD).

The GT72 claims " no boot device found" ... funny, cause BIOS displayed 2 SSD´s inside (1xm2 and 1xSATA) but in Boot Options menu the m2 was not visible and i was not able to startup in "legacy" mode whatever i tried.

I had to switch back from Legacy to UEFI to Legacy (each: reboot) and then afterwards success - i could boot from m2

So just for your info - in the case you may have same weird issue.

Since i deactivated WLAN and updated BT drivers seems running fine again.

Which driver is the best for the MSI GT72 2QE with GTX 980m. The MSI version 344.24 the 344.75 or the 347.09?

I find that the 344.75 is the best. With the 347.09 i have Hufe Fps Drops in Far cry 4

    Hi guys,
I recently bought the beast, ran some benches blah blah but I can't pass a ~9090 score in Fire Strike, while I reached ~9k5 with the G751jy I owned previously. Both runs with 344.75 drivers. Any idea why ?

Yup, but both laptops were overclocked to the same frequencies approximately ; Here is the score comparison Result

EDIT : Seems that the Asus was running the 347.09 driver, strange though because I remember having too much problems with it and rolling back to 344.75. Anyways, can't wait for an unlocked 980m modded vbios :p

Still can't figure out why it switches power plans and turns on adaptive brightness (which I turned off in every power plan) on its own :/
Not really critical, but to get rid of adaptive brightness I'm forced to restart.

Leave the bios alone if you are not having specific issues. The bios will be kept up to date with the latest vbios support since it is advertised as upgradable.

The changes/fixes are kept confidential at MSI so no one knows about them.
The only changes that we will ever see are the ones shown on the download page.

There is something I don't understand with my cpu : i'm on the "high performance" power plan (100% max cpu usage), shift mode on "sport", and my cpu still underclocks itself when I run an intensive task, even if the temps don't go past 73°C :

    Any ideas ?

Have you tried monitoring the same but with other tasks instead of the stress test? It is definitely weird, but it might be power related, or software related.

Yes, I tried with 3DMark and some videogames, same problem ! It would be nice if someone else could try it to let me know if my unit is faulty or something... but I don't think, seems indeed that it's more software related. Or maybe it's just a very clever BIOS trick that MSI did in order to be able to say "Oh look, the CPU temps are so chilly"

Indeed, they seem to have the same problem .. I have the 4710hq. You mean that your CPU can sustain the max frequency during a stress test ?
I didn't have this problem with the G751, also I scored 733 marks in the XTU benchmark, vs 779 with the Asus !

I don't Do any Stress Test. I Play for Example Metro and the Device Runs Great.

I only have a Little bit Trouble with Far cry 4, but i think it's the Game itself

I Heard that the Asus is Little overclock out of the box.

While running Intel XTU I noticed the CPU says " 2.6 ghz " and " 3.6 ghz turbo " But while doing the stress test it did stick to 3.4ghz . I also noticed I can't OC the CPU with this bios it just crashes the computer -- they have it locked don't they? :p I just wanted to achieve 3.6 ghz -- wonder if we could hit 3.8 even safely?

So as an update to my keyboard issues : Last Monday I dropped my laptop off where I bought it ( within their 14 day return policy you get a brand new replacement if there are any defects ). Later in the day I find out they are sending it to MSI somewhere out of country to evaluate it..I then picked the laptop up and said I'll do a warranty repair in the future..I just want to enjoy my new laptop for a while.

Long story short, turns out the guy was mistaken at the computer shop...it was waiting for approval for an advanced replacement which needs to be approved by MSI. I dropped the laptop off yesterday again at their request ( even though the process has been waiting for approval for the last week ). They said I'll likely not find out till Thursday and then a new unit will be shipped...good I'm getting a brand new replacement but hate the waiting period :s

You just have to slide the cursors to the max frequency :

    cursros.png

if you want to go past these frequencies you must increase the "reference clock" which is by default at 100MHz, but be careful with this one. Mine doesn't go further than 3,730 GHz with 1 active core (reference clock at 100,8168 MHz).

Happends the same to me, so i think you shouldn't worry about it. It would downclock itself to 3.1/3.0/2.9 randomly for me.
When i OC my cpu to 3.7 turbo boost. It sticks to 3.5ghz max turbo boost. That's abit odd though.

Oh, well I don't know another alternative to XTU sorry ! What could be really helpful would be to try the XTU stress test or benchmark and tell me if your CPU frequencies are stable :) And if possible, run some games too, with XTU opened in the background, to record the frequencies.

Your CPU is maxed out at 47W TDP at that speed. You would need to raise this to achieve a higher constant speed.

Hi Guys!(Ryzeki, -=$tR|k3r=-, Meaker) I am back here after 2 years! And now I am about to be official member of this thread. I am 2 weeks(hopefully) away of getting my GT72 with GTX 970 from Ken! Will be posting my own mini-review here(any review after HTWingNut is mini one :)) after I'll get my GT72.
