No dude ALL the GT73VR have TN panels.
GenTechPC is mistaken this isn't an IPS screen, this isn't a PLS screen, it's a 100% TN screen. MSI uses a very good TN screen but it's still TN.
They also advertise it as such by calling it "IPS-Level" NOT just "IPS". IPS Level just means the color is very similar to IPS, that's it.
Outside of desktop monitors there are no 5ms 120hz IPS / PLS / PVA etc panels for laptops.
-
There are technically some low ms IPS desktop monitors, but they are prohibitively expensive. We won't see that technology in the laptop form factor for a couple more years.
The fact that we're just now getting high refresh rate TN panels shows how far behind we are, compared to desktop monitors. -
Mostly comes down to size I'd imagine. There's nothing that says you can't stick a desktop panel into a laptop, but desktop panels are also significantly thicker, heavier, and bulkier. I mean a lot of monitors out there weigh almost as much / more than this entire laptop haha.
-
MSI or Dell certainly could commission such a premium part be made for their 17" machines, but they'd most certainly pass the cost on to us.
Would it be worth the extra, say, $500? For some, yes. I'd be tempted by a 1440p, 4ms IPS panel. -
I've pretty much decided this is the laptop I'm going to buy when I get home next weekend after being out of town for work (unless something crazy in the next week changes my mind).
I think I'm just going to grab it from Frys, so I'll post here once I have it regarding Gsync just so people have another datapoint.
Is GForce Experince still a thing with these new laptops and the 10-series cards? I'm coming from an older laptop with a 750m and that is how I kept the drivers updated. -
I think you'll like it', I have no regrets. I have been using Geforce experience and it seems to work just fine.

Hello,
Have anyone bought it in Spain?
Msi support has told me that the screen is 60hz... -
Hi All,
I cannot find my built in camera in the device manager, and because this i cannot use it at all.
Any ideas, or advice ?
thanks -
I'm having the same issue and will resolve it this morning, Did you do a re install of windows by chance?
-
I found the solution... It was hilarious... Hit FN key+F6 that turns the camera on manually......omg
hmscott and noodles-the-cat like this. -
lol, I just found out that you can turn it on with the SCM app too.
hmscott and noodles-the-cat like this. -
What is that exactly?
-
SCM = System Control Manager.
From MSI
"SCM is a built-in system control tool to manage device settings by using Fn hotkeys and the SCM control panel. It also provides the ECO engine setup." -
Double-click the blue box that's in the taskbar's notification area, to pull up SCM.
-
I answer myself. As someone else previously suggested, msi ibérica does not know what they are selling.
I asked them directly and they said the screen is 60hz. The store pccomponentes said that they asked msi and said that is 60hz. Today another store told me that they have just asked msi and this time they said 120hz. All of that for the same model....Last edited: Oct 4, 2016noodles-the-cat and ekkolp like this. -
last night I went to play Witcher 3 on my desktop and the performance was much less then I was accustomed to so I checked the graphics settings and saw that the Steam cloud loaded the graphics setting form my laptop, how irritating. That got me to thinking that I should try out my Dell 1440p Gsync monitor through my laptop. Whats the best way to do this? There is a mini display port as well as this Thunderbolt port. Is one preferred over the other? and will Gsync work?
TIA -

Use the Mini DP port since it's GPU direct. -
Sounds good thanks. Does anyone know if there is some sort of spliter/switch I could use to easily connect to my monitor which has only one display port.
-
Wow, 100% CPU usage "problem" solved - it's a performance feature of MSI Dragon Center to improve performance - it fools the system into thinking there is high usage when there isn't - see 04:00 forward to 4:57
This feature is on other MSI laptops too... a simple toggle off.Atma, Gamer@Knight and DukeCLR like this. -
Hi all, I'm looking into the GT73VR 6RE (1080p gtx 1070) but am puzzled about the fan (emission) noise. Some say it's one of the most quiet laptops availible (both users as well as review sites), while others say that the fan noise is one of the weaker aspects of the laptop. I watched the decibel reading video, same body but with the 1080, and it read 48db during the Firestrike demo. Which is 'quiet' for a gaming laptop but not quiet enough in the living room
Some say the noise isn't bad with headphones on, but I don't think I can convince the wife and kids to walk around with headphones on the entire evening
I'm not looking into OC and expect to run the laptop in sport (default) mode but I do like to game for quite some hours in a row so temperatures will rise.
Please share your experience with fan noise levels during heavy gaming.

I have been flying noisy airplanes for almost 30 years so I'm used to noisy environments but I really don't notice the fan noise while I'm gaming. I set up a custom fan profile that is a bit nosier then the default fan profile because I like to keep the temps around 70 deg C and at that higher fan speed its not bad at all and, in fact, a bit more quiet then my older GT70.

Thank you for sharing. It drives me Crazy why the CPU usage is on 100 Prozent all the Time. I test it laterhmscott likes this.

I just got my gt73vr today... but for some reason it won't play any games... it launches but as soon as it starts the screen just stays black and the audio is noisy... I can get back to windows start and restart the notebook but can't quIt or close
Already updated the driver, don't know whatelse to do... :-( help anyone? -
Maybe disable Gsync? I've read some posts about Gsync locking games up and creating weird screen behaviour (scan lines).
-
I had a problem with The Withcer 3 doing this when I first got the computer, I think it was due to an interrupted install and I fixed it by deleting some file, I found the solution in this video. . I had some wireless issues when I first got the computer that may have led to this.
-
Ok... it seems i just had to uncheck two boxes on dragon center, usb booster and storage booster. But i still have the in game audio issue...
-
So what exactly is the issue? Is the audio normal and just a blank screen with 3d aps/games or are both audio and video not working? I would look at your 3d settings in the Nvidia Control Panel.
-
Gaming went back to normal after I unchecked USB and storage booster, it's not freezing upon launching the game anymore, but I still get weird gaming sound, trembling, noises... music outside the game is ok, pc sounds ok, YouTube ok... but gaming... the sound is not clear
-
I would look at the Nahimic app and see what settings you have. I had a mic issue when I tried to run without Nahimic, re installing helped.
-
So I figure I should run a clean recovery.... all perfect... but have been some update which I hope I don't bump into again
-
If everything else is working fine I would just install Nahimic, if you have a bunch of things going wrong I would do a clean recovery and remove what annoys you.
-
I ordered a GT73VR with a 1070, but I am considering getting the SLI version. Could anyone with the 1070 SLI run some benchmarks with a program called Octane Render, for GPU CUDA rendering?
I would like to know the temps and score at the end of the benchmark.
You can find it at this forum: render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=56108&hilit=gtx+1080+bench
The benchmark files are on the first post on that thread. If you need any help with it, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate your help!!Last edited: Oct 14, 2016hmscott likes this. -
I just figured out my issue.... my notebook was working just fine until stupid windows updated itself and I didn't notice... started up freezing and slowing down performance... audio began crashing due low performance
Any ideas how to get back without a new install? -
Do you still have the recovery partition on the SSD? you can use that or just download all the latest software from the MSI support page. Earlier in this thread I was given directions on how to make USB boot drive in case I need to do it again.
-
It's not a permanent solution, the windows will update itself eventually, so it will get back to the issue... I found out a solution, apparently, for the audio on nihamic Facebook page, and also a performance help, supposedly... trying it now
-
I don't have facebook so post up your results. I think i installed new audio after a large Windows update and the drivers and software have been working fine.
-
There is a new audio driver (9/29) for the GT73VR-017 (GTX 1070) that fixed my audio problems. https://us.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT73VR-TITAN-6th-Gen-GTX-1070.html#down-driver&Win10 64
If you have a different model it looks like the same update is available. -
We only had one guy report so far on 1070 SLI in the GT83VR - @Royalm but he hasn't been back since 9/18, check out his posts for his results on Fire Strike etc.
Is there anyone here with a GT73VR 1070 SLI?JorgeMartinez likes this. -
Can someone with a GT73 with GTX1080 ask MSI support how much a replacement MXM 1080 would cost should it be required?
Thanks.hmscott likes this. -
OK, just purchased the laptop from a Fry's location here in the US and i does indeed have a 120Hz, G-Sync screen. Just an FYI for anyone else who has been confused by MSI's information online.

I actually asked this question in the MSI thread earlier, no reply yet.

I am looking to buy one of these bad boys with a 1080 gpu but i can't decide if i should go with the 6700HQ CPU option or the 6820HK CPU option. I will be buying from UK and there is quite a price premium for the 6820HK option.
So my question to you guys, is the 6820HK worth the extra cash? Obviously, i would be looking to overclock the 6820HK as i know it certainly isn't worth the price premium at stock settings.
The general consensus is that nvidia's 1080 gpu is overkill for 1080p gaming at present but i am thinking long term here. With newer consoles coming down the pipe the requirements for games are only going to get higher over the coming years as new console hardware tends to drive advances in game developments. Although the 1080 gpu should be able to hold its own for a good few yrs, i would hate after spending so much money to then be limited by the CPU.
Is there a lot of headroom in the 6700HQ CPU in terms of gaming performance? When people say a game is CPU intensive at present, what percentage of a 6700HQ usage are they talking about? Do they mean 30% usage or is it closer to 80/90% usage?Last edited: Oct 8, 2016 -
The 1080 is a waste, if you aren't running a 4+ GHz CPU.
Don't bother spending the huge 1080 premium, if you don't have the HK. -
Hi guys, so I'm more of a "filthy casual" when It comes to my laptops. Having owned an AW M15 and an Acer V Aspire, I haven't had to do almost any of the things people have been saying they been doing;
Software removal, calibration, re-paste even backup clean install. Much of what I read here sounds like a worryingly long list of things to do where as before I've been okay with start and go. Is the current situation of the GT73 as bad as people are making it out to be on here such as the pronounced problems with Killer wireless and Dragon Center etc. Putting me off buying TBH. :|
Also when it comes to new laptop purchases can someone give me a breakdown of things I need to check to make sure the laptop is okay?
The only thing that comes to mind for me is Temps. -
First of all this is an excellent piece of hardware and I have no regrets, It's a beast. There are some software issues that caused some problems, I had some that stemmed form me performing a clean install and not really knowing what I had to re install, I ended up re installing most of the software. Some people here are much more knowledgeable and up to date with overclocking and they know what to substitute the other software with there are also many here that are much more picky about colors and sound. If you are a "filthy casual" and just want a full sized gaming laptop, then you will have a great experience. It plays games wonderfully out of the box and the custom settings are all you need. Over time any issues you have can be brought up here and resolved.tonuzzi, noodles-the-cat and Atma like this.

Hello,
I am thinking about making a clean install. Do you know which software is mandatory so I don't have any issues?
Thanks
