Yes I will do that! Thank you VERY much for your assistanceI didnt even think to check if it was actually there or not. I had just assumed, like I had read of anothers issue, that it was defective. I'm really hoping to not have to send back the entire laptop. I was extremely impatient I'm not sure I can survive another wait !
-
That's just plain embarrassing, msi should do something about it so keep us posted.
-
I contacted the seller I bought from (ExCaliberPC) and this was their response
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hi Ryan, This is rather serious. MSI has never sent any units with missing drive inside. You broke the warranty void sticker on the back? I'm afraid to bring that up with them...
Does the unit boot to OS?
___________________________________________________________________________________________________-
I assume he wants to blame me for the 'missing' drive. I hardly would spend this much money and try to get a free dive out of it. Also .. what a question? No sticker gets broken in removing the front cover right?Last edited: Feb 20, 2015 -
Warranty is not denied if the seal is broke unless something is damaged. Opening the top there is no seal to break, that's how they were designed.
-
So ExCaliberPC called me. Let me tell you I've never talked to a nicer rep before. Long story short he is going to contact MSI and try to get the SSD for me, but he assured me that even if they refuse to believe me about the missing drive that they are going to handle it and replace it themselves since I bought from them. It is very odd that a drive would be missing.. but he made a good point about it being raid 0 and if the drive was there to begin with windows probably wouldnt have worked out of the box.
Regardless.. he was extremely positive on the phone and very friendly. I'm happy to have bought from them. My last laptop was my Alienware M15x from dell. Talking to them was never quite so pleasant. -
Glad to hear they responded in good manner. So the laptop boots normally?
-
Yes everything works fine.. the only issue is the absence of 1 SSD
. I really only noticed to start because of the size of my C drive.

Glad to hear you're getting it resolved.
Also removing the access panel like that does not require the removal of the warranty sticker.
And as mentioned breaking that will not void the warranty, but their policy may state they won't take it back. -
Well its good to hear that the system actually works, wondering if the specs are not correctly advertised at the seller because if it was in raid from the factory it would not have booted. Either way glad to hear things are getting resolved.
-
Yea I'm not sure. Thanks everyone for your concern and your feedback. I'm very much in love with the laptop so far.
Question though.. if they do just send me another SSD to put in myself.. will it automatically go into raid0 or what will I have to do? -
Since the 2nd drive will be combined to create your raid 0 configuration you will want to be sure you entire current disk image is backed up and then restore the image after the raid is built on to your new combined disk. You will update your disk to the raid configuration though your bios menu tools. For backup and restore you could use Acronis or a different backup tool just use one you are familiar with.
The very first thing I would recommend is to burn your restore image from the factory as asked usually when booting up the machine. This could save you if things go wrong with your image to get the system back to factory settings or to restore windows. -
Thanks GTVEVO I will do just that. I appreciate the fast response.

I just checked the most recent spec sheet we got from MSI and it does show 2x 128GB m.2 for all GT80 models. I think our stock is due in on Monday so I will ask our techs to physically check.
-
Glad to see that you got your GT80, sad to hear about the missing M.2 drive.
I just heard yesterday that mine is in process of getting parts/tweaked at Xotic PC. I am anxiously waiting for my status to change to "shipped", then mine to arrive. Feel like a radio contest just called my name and given me 5 minutes to call in, but I am listening to the radio 4:59 away from cell reception. -
You should demand them to send you two similar or better SSDs. You don't want to risk to get a different model of the same capacity.
-

Seems like the spec sheet may have a typographical error.
I am seeing 1x 128GB on the US website, see below URL.
http://us.msi.com/product/nb/GT80-Titan-GTX-980M/#hero-specification
Best to double check with MSI to verify the error as well as checking any 047 unit physically when it's in stock.Code:128GB M.2 SATA + 1TB HDD (7200RPM)
-
All other websites, specially the stores have 256GB(2x128GB) specification.
Another gate to freak about.
That's why I always print ALL the pages of the online purchase process (from the product page to the invoice and everything involved, such as warranty terms, etc.). -
Hey guys I know this might not be the best place to asks his but I really really torn with buying the gt80 or Alienware 15 with the amp .. Can some one please help me make a choice !! HElP.
-
msi gt80 is the only one of a kind
.
-
I'm just worried about future upgrade on the GPU the amp seems like it will be very easy .. And cost a bit less .....
-
Does G-Sync work on this, like it does the GT72?
-
I was disappointed I had to wait a few days for my 'Dying Light' coupon code when they forgot, but that sounds like a real bummer.
-
I was thinking of the Alienware also, but once I considered my usage pattern I went with the GT80. The Alienware should look good with its IPS panel, and it specs with better battery life, but it is not that much lighter (comparatively) at 7.07 lbs vs 9.9 lbs for the GT80. For the video card, the Alienware options a 4 Gig 980m on the top end, but you lose access to the card and therefore SLI options whn connected to the amplifier vs SLI 980m 8gig on most models of the GT80.
http://na.alienwarearena.com/forums/thread/83039/general-discussion/alienware-graphics-amplifier-faq
In the end, I feel that the more that you plan on using the laptop away from the desk (office, hotel, etc.) and the more you use it on the road (in a plane, train etc.) the more I would lean towards the Alienware. In the end though, if portability were a priority I would probably not look at either option. (GS30 with similar docking station maybe). That would get you a thin and light capable of Diablo III level games while on the road with a 2.65 lb laptop and a good dedicated video card when at your primary location.
The above is opinion only, based on my research (while making my decision) , I just hope that some of it works for you. -
has anyone been able to adjust voltage on 980m cards, i want to undervolt mine abit, if so what drivers/vbios/tools have you used to do so.
-
Yeah I def leaning to the gt80 because I dorm lay in bed and play .. Do think the Alienware will be more powerful in the future because the amp.?
-
With the amp only supporting one GPU and the current connection capabilities it will not compete but we can't predict the future so I wouldn't dwell on it too much. The amp is a very cool piece of hardware but it will only get better with time if the product its self succeeds in the market. So either way I would wait on that product line, just my 02hmscott likes this.

Get the msi gs30 if you are going with a external graphics solution.
2015 alienwares are having tons of setbacks with fit finish, drivers, display, and performance - the aw15 is only pciex4 combined with a gimped cpu- most are benching around 6-7k for a 2000$+ setup with gtx980 desktop gpu.
My gs30 hit over 10k firestrike with just a gtx970 in the dock - fat better performance.
In my opinion if you were gonna go with aw and graphics amp and gtx980 (cost of 850$ for amp and gpu) and get 6.5 k benchmark -why not just get a laptop with a 980m in it for cheaper - the 980ms are running just as well if not better.
To me the graphics amp shoots itself in the foot before you even get it as it is producing performance at a 30-40% loss. Mobile gpus are only 20-25% behind desktop gpus so just get a strong mobile gpu laptop.
Or get the gs30 if you need the mobility like i do - and truly enjoy full desktop power.hmscott and Kevin@GenTechPC like this. -

That's very awesome.

So has anyone had any experience with undervolting the 980m? i'm looking just to cool things down alittle, performance is super thus far, and -75mv on CPU is running great.
hmscott likes this. -
Unfortunately only with lg ips panel gsync is working.
-
Must be typo on MSI's website, all GT80 SKUs in the US comes with 256GB (128GB X2) M.2 SSDs.
-
I find this very interesting, i'd seen the talk about undervolting cpu early on in this thread and looked into it's benefits, I really like the cooling potential but then was put off a little about tweaking in anyway when I read their are things which can conflict with the dragon gaming tweaks.... so im going to level myself up on intel xtu and undervolting etc now I know results can be stable and worthwhile, cheers.
-
Also going to have to level up on this as have an ultrawide lg IPS, thanks.
-
Did anyone's GT80 come with extra m.2 bolts for the other 2 slots? I ordered some m.2 drives and no mounting screws with them either.
-
-75 undervolt on 4980hq is rock solid thus far, i may try more tonight but im gonna play diablo 3, all night and see what happens
hermes33 likes this. -
I used screws from msi cx 640
.
-
I have went through my stash and I have nothing in that size. Are there any vendors that are modifying the GT80's that can either provide the screw size and length or even sell me a few, please contact me via PM if possible. Thanks in advance.
-
Hi can you tell what m.2 drives you went with? Im looking for a m.2 ssd 512gb, but cant seem to find anything yet.
Thanks for your reply -
It looks like the Crucial MX200 500GB[1] are the fastest M.2 AHCI drives at the moment.
[1] http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/storage-ssd-mx200 -
I used 2 x 512gb transend 800 series to make a 1tb volume. I have been watching several brands but I expect changes for the m.2 line down the year and I was able to snag them right at 200 a piece so I couldn't pass them up with resale being in that range.
Benchmarking shows they perform better than the stock kingston but they are bigger in size so that is pretty common. -
I advise you to reduce your processor cache ratio to 30 or perhaps slightly less, and test how it goes. The less power your uncore consumes, the more power is available to your cores, which results in higher average core clock frequency. Temps will not really improve, but performance might
In the end, it all regulates to 47w. You can also try undervolting slightly the processor cache, I only went to -35mv for now. -

That is odd, I would think they should be included. I checked a GE62 and GE72 I have next to me which support 3x m.2 drives and the screws are included. No GT80 on hand to check though. I would give MSI a call to see if they will send them to you, their phone number is on the bottom of your computer. -
I will check when I get home, to see if mine are included.

It's designed (and advertised) for you to be able to add them in, contact your reseller/MSI and I am sure they will sort you out
-
I contacted MSI, 24 min and 6 bucks later for 2 screws. That was the only way I was getting them. It's a bit depressing as I am sure I had the best bone head on the other end of the line.
-
Have you considered something like this? http://www.xoticpc.com/msi-gs30-shadow001-p-7860.htmlLast edited: Feb 24, 2015

Not sure of the exact model you're referring too, but will this fit the MSI GT80 TITAN?

Thanks for your reply. -
Yep, I don't have screws for the remaining m.2 ahci drives.
On an unrelated note, here is my passmark, for whatever it is worth:
Passmark Rating 4,851
CPU Mark 9,403
2D Graphics Mark 856
3D Graphics Mark 7,708

Yes, it does!

Hello Everyone,
I am really interested in this laptop. I was wondering if you could give me some reason of why you bought this over a desktop and over other laptops. I mean it is 3699.00 and very expensive. I really want the best of the best.
From what I have read in the thread is that with 47W TDP that might be a slight issue with getting the best of the best but maybe not completely a problem.
That it only has a 60HZ screen and the 980M’s crush that.
And it was compared to the Sager NP9377-S.
I am looking at a 3K+ laptop and very interested in one. I do not want to build or have the space for a desktop so that done.
If you got a separate monitor could you have 120HZ output of the GT80 Titan?
Also the Alienware 17 is out of the question because the amplifier is handicapped.
These are all the different things that I am thinking. So could you please elaborate and help me choose because I am very interested but do not want to waste 3K+ dollars.
Thank You.
