How do you know that a new model of the gt80 is gonna be announced soon? I was probably gonna get the sli 263 but if a new model is gonna come out soon I might wait.
-
It's a joke so no worries the 263 is your best bet right now. I don't expect a new model until skylake is announced and historically this will be end or beginning of year.

Thanks for the info! I just wanted to make sure there wasnt a new model coming out so early.
-
What is the thought of installing windows 10 on the GT80 ? I'm not a total idiot with a computer, but I really don't want to install Windows 10 and cause myself any unexpected problems either. Is the thought that all the needed drivers and such will be readily available ?
-
mneumann, saying that you are feeling this way, I can only recommend to not upgrade to Windows 10 right away.
Why put yourself through the pain? Wait until at least October when the "speed update" is supposed to be released. Maybe another 3 months after that so MS can fix those bugs too.
If you are happy with your GT80 and Windows 8.1, wait for 6 months, that is about how long it seems to take for all the new drivers, bugs, and gotchas to be found and fixed after a major release - that's how long it took for 8.0=>8.1.
At that point you will be at a better point in time to decide if upgrading to Windows 10 is worth the effort.
Right now, know one knows for sure just how bad it's going to be
Besides, how good can it be for free?Last edited: Jul 25, 2015Wess16 likes this. -

I agree. I plan to also play the waiting game.
First off all I am pretty sure there is no need to upgrade on Day 1, that is asking for trouble and second I doubt to see anything to gain on the GT80, performance wise.
I just bought my GT80 last month and I will probably upgrade to Windows 10, 11 months from now, once all is probably running smoothly and see our fellow Window 10 guinea pigs input on the GT80 -

Nah it should be announced at gamescon on August 4thhmscott likes this. -
Intel’s Skylake coming soon, may be announced at Gamescom

The wait for Skylake is almost over, first desktop chips likely to hit August 5

Intel's Skylake 14nm processor release dates revealed
http://www.itpro.co.uk/desktop-hardware/24658/intels-skylake-14nm-processor-release-dates-revealed
"Coming later in September, Skylake-H will roll out, which will address high-performance notebooks and some Xeon segments. Other versions of this processor will hit the market between October, most notably for gaming notebooks such as the Core i7-6920HQ, Core i7-6820HQ and Core i7-6700HQ."
So, it looks like my joke was more prescient than funny
It might be time to wait. Again.Last edited: Jul 25, 2015 -
Well I look like an idiot, historic trends are going to be broken. I really can't remember a time that intel moved so fast but I will take it.
Thanks for the info I will be looking out for sure.

Intel's delay's in the various die shrinks / architecture changes are piling up releases onto one another.
Who knows how the laptop vendors are going to respond to all of this. Will they release new laptops for every new Intel CPU release, or worry about getting burned - with customers skipping one CPU release, waiting long enough to make the next CPU release.
The laptop makers might hedge their bets, and make fewer units of each model - we could all be vying for limited numbers of the best models.
The Skylake gaming laptop CPU releases are to be spread out through September, October, November, and January 2016.
And, then in 2016, Kabylake followed by Cannonlake:
Intel to launch Kaby Lake processors in 2016
http://www.cpu-world.com/news_2015/2015062401_Intel_to_launch_Kaby_Lake_processors_in_2016.html
Maybe we don't need to wait.
If the new CPU's all improve along the 14nm process, just like the Haswell CPU's came out with so many iterations - all around the same basic feature and clock range.
It's unlikely that any new 14nm CPU will clock much faster than the 5950HQ - the available thermal range won't allow it, just like Haswell.
A more efficient 14nm CPU could be released. A 5%-20% efficiency improvement at the same clock speed would be impressive, and it wouldn't result in a noticeable performance improvement in games / apps.
A bird in the hand...Last edited: Jul 25, 2015Wess16 likes this. -
"Looking at the laptop market, mobile Skylake processors, alongside Intel's Skylake platform reference design featuring USB 3.1 Type-C ports and more, should start to appear during Q4. These are nicely timed for the run up to the 'holiday season', which I like to call 'Xmas' "

I don't think skylake is worth it because our CPUs are not even an issue right now. I am much more interested in newer GPUs
Nonrelated to skylake: I just updated my Steel series engine thing for my keyboard and I noticed a couple of FN+ commands no longer work. FN+PGUP/DN no longer control the intensity of the keyboard lightning, I have to do it manually with the program. Additionally, FN+F2 doesn't seem to work either.
Any thoughts about this? I might just revert to stock SCM and Steel series engine. Maybe it is the steel series engine to begin with, causing the issue. -
ryzeki, did you get the updates from MSI, or Steelseries?
I am using a GS70-065 loaner while I wait for my GT80-263 to arrive, and I found that it can't run Steel Series 3 software, only Steel Series 2. I got the SS3 software from Steelseries, and it refused to work. I downloaded the latest SS2 software from MSI, and it works fine.
If you downloaded from Steelseries, maybe uninstall and get the latest from MSI?Last edited: Jul 25, 2015 -
ryzeki, it isn't so much the Skylake CPU, it is DDR4, USB 3.1, and G-Sync hardware for 15"/17" screens.
Has no one else has tried a G-sync monitor with a GT80? Does it work?
Only one 18" screen is available from Samsung, IDK if Samsung will release a G-sync certified 18" screen. It would be nice if MSI provided the G-sync hardware to support external screens.
From what I can tell DDR4 isn't worth it, unless you have a specific work load that can benefit from it:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8959/...-3200-with-gskill-corsair-adata-and-crucial/8
USB 3.1 is too new, and currently the performance of a single source storage device can't match the speed improvement of the USB 3.1 bus.
The one thing I worry about is whether MSI will redesign an 18" SLI laptop for Skylake and release it. IDK if the sales volume would support it.
It would be wise for MSI to have an 18" SLI laptop long term, 4k and then 8k screens will demand SLI GPU power.
Otherwise the GT80-263 with the i7-5950HQ Broadwell might be the pinnacle of MSI's 18" laptop for years to come.Last edited: Jul 25, 2015 -
Not yet. I found some posts on-line describing how to disable specific Windows 10 updates. Will be trying it soon and will posts results.

I was looking a few posts back and there was one about Nahimic audio software replacing the soundblaster software and it seemed to be an improvement. Is this not available for the GT80 yet? I still see the soundblaster 2 cinema software as the only available option for my laptop. Thanks !!
-
From MSI. However, I never really remember having the steel series engine to begin with, so I uninstalled it and my control for keyboard lighting was regained. It seems that the steel series engine takes control of it when installed, so for now I chose to uninstall it. It does have great features like remapping the entire keyboard so I will consider using it later on.hmscott likes this.

I am sure Gsync monitors do work because the extra hardware resides in the monitor itself, not the laptop. I do remember reading someone in the forums that has already used a gsync monitor. What does not work is using gsync with triple monitors.
Also, I am pretty sure the GT80 still has a healthy life with MSI. It will remain the top product, but likewise we will mostly only see expensive configurations as it is a rather niche product. I would love to see a redesign, that incorporates triple fan, as the current design is quite hot for the CPU.hmscott likes this. -
I join you with my new toy....first time with msi monster laptop...bu i have a question: in bios is it possible to choose num lock on/off, but it looks have no effect and the pad...worsk always like pad....furthermore is quite hard to enable and i have to press many times, while trackpad looks ok....same to you!?

Yes no probleme

Are you seeing an improvement during overclocking? Where did you purchase the 2-1 adapter?

Right on it seems to work for sure but do you happen to have a test to compare, 1 adapter vs 2 at the same clocks to see the difference in scores?

Not a massive difference then, but it will help take the stress out of the PSU.
-
Single GPU will hardly push the 330w as much as SLI, so the fact that it works is great news. I might buy the adapter and a power brick to test 660w power. No more random shutdowns during testing at +250 core and +67mv! haha

...I read this entire thread this weekend 0.0 Hopefully friday my machine is here.
question has anyone tried a 120hz plasma TV as a 'working' second monitor? Im toying either a 27-32 monitor, or buying a second tv and moving my older plasma as a beater screen which appears to do 1080p ok. -
Got the keypad 'num' button working over the weekend by using the MSI supplied driver and keeping Windows 10 from updating it. These links provide two different means of doing it.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930
and
http://hmemcpy.com/2015/04/preventing-a-certain-windows-update-from-installing-on-windows-10/
Initially there were problems in stopping the update before I could disable it.
What worked for me was once the MSI driver had been installed and subsequently updated, in Device Manager under Mice & other pointing devices right click Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad -> Properties -> Driver -> Roll Back Driver.
Hope this helps others. -
Thanks for the update, have you been able to perform any testing with 3dmark benchmarks?

Went to FRYs yesterday and tried the gt80 they had on display. The touchpad suddenly stopped registering clicks... This worries me some.

mason2smart, did you try switching back to touchpad? You might have filled an input buffer, no more input / no more input clicks. The App likely wants mouse clicks, not numpad input.
Which Fry's did you see this? Fry's product finder showed no count's for the -263, but now I see Renton WA has some. -

The cursor completely disappeared. The numlock was on. (I took the photos before this issue occurred) I even hit the touch pad buttons but it didn't do anything - I was in notepad at the time. The numlock button did work tho.

It was the FRYs in Houston and I was looking at the 253 (base model) because that's all they had.

mason2smart, the -253 shows available in Houston, Dallas, Webster TX, Renton WA, and Downers Grove IL.
It's nice that Fry's put one out for demo. They even installed the Gold Keys and set out the Backpack

Guys, has anyone tried fitting the o-ring stops for the GT80 Cherry MX Brown key's to quiet them?
Cherry MX Rubber O-Ring Switch Dampeners (125pcs)
http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/cherry-mx-rubber-o-ring-switch-dampeners-125pcs.html
Video's showing differences before/after o-ring install.
WASD Keyboards: Cherry MX Switch Sound Comparison
Mechanical keyboard O-ring mod - 40A-R - Corsair K70
I emailed WASD Keyboards Support to ask them which o-ring would be best for the MSI GT80 with Cherry MX Brown switches.
They said that their Red o-ring is .2mm and the Blue o-ring is.4mm, and the Blue will reduce the travel of the key after switch contact, and the Red stop it from bottoming out but don't reduce travel as much.
$15 for a bag of either size, and they have o-ring/switch/keycap sampler kits too:
http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/sampler-kit.html
I am currently leaning toward the Red o-ring, to stop the bottoming out, but not reduce the keystroke distance.Last edited: Jul 27, 2015zziplex likes this. -
i leave my MX'es alone on my deck keyboards, been using them a very long time. I think i'd consider .2 on the laptop for better repeat float but I tend to be less noise considerate.
