Damn son! We never said this thing was unstoppable lol it has its limitsLOL.
-
Now you got me curious! Make that happen and grab a screen shot.

This thing is far from mobile and I don't see how its even considered a laptop. It weighs 10lbs WITHOUT lugging around its huge power supply.. It fills a void where someone needs desktop-ish performance but needs more portability. If you were to leave it at home on your desk all day, get a desktop. I'll be impressed when they manage extreme performance in something that can be carried around easily and not measure in at almost 3" thick. At that point desktops will be useless IMO.Daygecko likes this.

I have the perfect case for it. It's a little bigger than my 18.4" Sony VAIO VGN-AW270Y, so I will have to rearrange things a bit.

Been sold!...I am still waiting until late February to purchase though.Last edited: Dec 26, 2015Frankzro likes this.

If anyone is looking for a way to transport this beast, I have a solution that is working very well for my VAIO.
The case is an Explorer military grade unit that is currently on sale here:
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B008RXWNZW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
I took out the foam inserts and added at the bottom for accessories, power supply etc.:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...es_ecbm_divv_div_v_padded_container_with.html
Then, on top of this I added two of these (upside down) for holding cables accessories etc.
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HU4AGG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
Then the panel for holding papers schematics etc (this is perfect for holding 13x19 printouts (without folding) that I get from my Epson Stylus Photo R1800), and also has pockets for holding...you guessed it, more accessories.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...s_ecbm_panexpl53_panexpl53_lid_panel_for.html
Then, the soft case for holding the laptop and cooler...I ordered this without the dividers since i ordered the dividers separately.

In Addition, I added this Bag, which has a slot on the back that slips down over the handle of the case and allows me to carry...you guessed it more accessories, drinks, and lunch!
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B004BNN0JU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 -

Dear god man... You really like those bags don't ya?
That large plastic case with the foam incerts, we use those for work.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think this laptop might be too big for it.
I don't have one with me, but they are big.
Oh right, I just remembered we use two types , the one you want is the bigger version. That one is huge, but they are heavy and take up a lot of space. If you cant take it on a plane you did the right thing lol!Daygecko likes this. -
I already measured my case, and it should fit. I am not as concerned with taking it on a plane, as I drive to most job sites. When flying, I will remove the soft case (Bag-V) with the laptop in it and carry it on.
If possible, I will also carry on the power brick in the lunch bag.
I can then rearrange things once I get to my hotel.

I actually bought the whole case setup with the GT80 in mind long before I would be purchasing the GT80 and have been using it with my 18.4" VAIO.Frankzro likes this.

You know what guys? I have a theory about how the battery might work and it is VERY interesting.
I noticed that the only time I use up the battery is when I run the GPU fans on high (Which I do for every gaming session)
It looks like the fans are powered in some kind of "Hybrid" manner, bouncing from wall power to battery power

Thanks Frankzro!...Great Info!

Can test using the Dragon application. 3DM + windowed mode w/ batter connected and disconnected.

Started playing with some mild overclocks this intel XTU app is frustrating. Im used to overclocking through the bios and i have been out of the game for a min so i have a lot to re learn. This app keeps glitching out loosing options. I was able to get a 4.0ghz overclocking with combination of using reference and multiplier settings then i reboot and reference setting disappears WTH.
Anyone have some screenshots of Intel XTU app settings for a solid overclock. Trying to hit 4ghz stable. Also i was doing this with trubo mode at 4ghz instead of having the processor maxed out at 4ghz all the time not sure if this is ideal or not any advice or guides you can link me to would be much appreciated. It seems these chips are to rare to have any real good info out yet so at the moment its a lot of trial and error.
I was able to achieve this 17329 on fire strike not bad for a Lap Top system.

My reference clock has disappeared in my Intel XTU app anyone know how to get this back? Unistall, Reinstall no worky. Arghhhhh.

Interesting, I thought it was just me (GT80 SLI-263), my XTU Reference Clock control disappeared after updating BIOS to E1812IMS.119 from E1812IMS.118.
I only occasionally used it, to bump up 1 or clicks to even out the BCLK x multi for even number clock result..
I am running the same XTU, 6.0.2.8 -

Hmmmmmm, me thinks you like notebooks TOO much! You need to stay away from notebooks a while, at least until you've carried on your legacy, LOL!
(Let me guess, no girlfriend, no wife, and you need to get out more, right?...... )
-
I set the multiplier higher then the system can handle it caused a reboot and now reference clock is back go figure lol. I ended up going back to stock anyway because the performance gain is honestly minimal in comparison to added heat and the cpu temps are higher then i prefer even at stock. Can anyone share their temps under load my cpu and graphics card are bouncing around from low to mid 80c and that just seems to high for me. I hit 90 on cpu when running prime. Does anyone have a laptop cooler that is actually helping with this?

Temps are great for an SLI notebook..... see benchmarks w/temps in post #2 of this thread.

Good observation Sherlock!
Anyways, Just have to break the mood for myself, it would seems Newegg doesn't allow reshipping company/email forwarder. I was about to order and have it ship to an email forwader and reship to the Philippines but damn, too bad since I got $5000 Newegg Gift Card, now I couldn't use it. -
How/why did you get a $5000 credit at Newegg if you can't get anything shipped to you from them?
Last edited: Dec 29, 2015 -
It's an e-Gift card that I purchased online.
-
In that case, you should let newegg know that they need to ship to you, or refund you

And, you won't know, until you ask newegg nicely - ask them for help, and put it in their hands to resolve

Anyone here knows what is the wattage of these cards? 120W, 150W? Also how do they fare against the P870DM 200W card? Seems like the CPU is doing really well and any throttling noticed as for now?
-
Prema says 130W I think? My Firestrike score is with stock GPU settings, so I can't really say how much OC potential there is for those. 4 minutes of Prime95 doesn't cause throttling at 4GHz and -80mV, but I haven't done any extensive tests. 5 minutes does, but that's because the stress test changes tasks or something and suddenly it jumps up to 91W and 96C, and the 4 minutes before that it's sitting at 77W/85C without any throttling at all.

Curious as to how you managed to get a $5000 gift card when the Newegg limit is $2,500 ?
https://secure.newegg.com/GiftCard/EntryScreen.aspx?hmscott likes this. -
Keep in mind guys the TDP is 45watts it will never hold over that, 4ghz is over 45w and I would suspect the line around 3.8ghz. Scoring 11-12k physics is still fine for gaming as long as it will hold around there.
Last edited: Dec 30, 2015hmscott likes this. -
Well, I haven't tested for over five minutes yet, but it holds 77W for at least four, which is well over the 150 second limit for previous generations.CaerCadarn and hmscott like this.
-
I don't believe this. 77W with the GT80(S) cooling would cause >100c. I monitored this myself and even around 6xW, the notebook peaked 80s to 90s.
Secondly, what version and what mode of Prime95 are you running? AVX2 should be wrecking your CPU, thermally throttling it to hell and back.hmscott likes this. -
I've actually seen throttling on my last Sager Laptop, but this Slaptop? -- Never! (Yet lol)
Gaming for hours playing games like Planetside 2 , Fallout 4 and Just Cause 3. Everything runs smoothly and looks good so far.hmscott likes this. -
You must be doing a lot more than gaming because you seem to REALLY care about the performance peaks lol.
I'm mean its a solid laptop so far, but just like any piece of hardware something better always comes along, I bet you're never satisfied
-
*shrug* Dunno what to tell you. It's the blend test, so maybe it doesn't run anything that takes advantage of AVX2 until 4 minutes in? Like I mentioned earlier, at around that point my temps do skyrocket, but the package power also hits 90+ until the throttling kicks in a few seconds later.

I don't think those games can really push a 980 SLI let alone a single 980 so we are not going to observe any throttling if any unless we push the cards in these well cooled laptops. It is only a question of whether the cooling and PSU is enough to handle the maximum that these cards have to offer. My very own sager throttles due to heat issues but that is thanks to the crappy 7970m and the poor heatsink alignment etc. Having said that I am curious how effective the cooling is for these SLI machines when pushed to the limit.
I also wonder how much overclocking headroom is left considering that the cards are each 130W.Last edited: Dec 31, 2015 -
Guess what GPUs my Sager NP9370 had? ...
o__o Get rid of that thing, my 7970m(s) died two months ago at the same time.. Yes I agree they are craptastic cards indeed...
Know for throttling and for dieing... Plus I bought 330W PSU and that didn't work. I'm sure the 7970m's use more power than these 980 MXMs... -
Sager did a terrible job with their 7970m notebooks. They were famously known to be the worst option for that gpu, which fared better elsewhere.
980 SLI is looking very good
-
No power throttling for 20 minutes! Some mild thermal throttling every once in a while because one of the cores runs hot, but even so it still ran at full clocks the whole time. Would someone else care to test and see if my chip is just a fluke or if this is the case for all 6920s?
-=$tR|k3r=-, hmscott, GTVEVO and 1 other person like this. -
Nice, those are some crazy temps for only 4ghz but it's awesome it will hold. Next test you should run that cpu speed with gpu's involved to see if the cpu will still hold steady.
Btw I would be very careful to ever upgrade the bios or EC because in the past this was not possible with the HQ CPU line. In other words it could be removed without warning.

I took my optical drive and turned it into a external drive so I could mount my 1tb samsung msata ssd (with a msata to sata converter) so I have another gig of storage to speed up my gaming load time

BURN BABY, BURN! Very impressive! Heck, just running standard benchmarks on my GT80-009 (4980HQ), without OC, I was getting CPU temps in this range. Will I run such a test.... nope! Other than testing hardware limitations, I can't really see any advantage in all this. I'll leave this to testing reviewer's, who have nothing vested in the machine. Besides, I am VERY happy with performance levels and temps, just as they are out-of-the-box.
I am curious however, what were your ambient temps while testing, and were you running fans wide-open using Cooler Booster?
-
The advantage is very noticeable in gaming when stressing the cpu to maintain framerates so it is valueable info and a feature previous models could not do, which is what this forum is all about.
Thanks to the individuals for the testing because this question is presented continuously and now there is a valid answer.

I truly appreciate the efforts of those that are performing such tests. They make me more confident that for my uses, this machine will probably last me as long as I need it to and will be a solid performer. Like _=$tR|k3r=_, my investment is important to me, so I will try not to stress it too much. I do however applaud those brave souls who follow the spirit of exploration and pass on information and knowledge to us all. Thank you sincerely.
