    Hello,

I am just getting into performance laptop undervolting after finding out that it is almost essential, and I just performed my first undervolt on my new GE75 with Throttlestop. I'm curious how much others are able to undervolt their i9-9880's to compare (I know that they all are different, so my results may vary.)

Also, how do you determine if it is stable? My machine has frozen a couple of times recently, always when viewing a twitch page actually. I did not get a blue screen, only a completely frozen PC that required a hard reboot. Does that mean my undervolt needs to be reduced?

Are you guys doing any wattage adjustments or overclocking?

    Thanks,

    Bob

You need to reduce UV a bit. The goal is to make it run better at less power, not worse.

In general I haven’t been happy with this laptop at all. If I run a really aggressive undervolt, the temps come down a bit and the stuttering mostly goes away, but I get real bad instability. If I reduce the undervolting, the stability improves (still not 100%) but the stuttering becomes much more apparent. The “sweet spot” for stability seems to be at -.080 where I don’t get many crashes, but it isn’t enough to keep the temps down low enough to avoid throttling.

$3500 laptop and it runs like crap, even with tuning.

What are you running that causes high temps right away?

Have you repasted to see if there were any improvements?

A thinner machine is all about management and not about performance usually so none really ever get the temps right.

I don’t play a ton of different games, generally just Destiny 2, but there has been a content drought so I branched out and started The Division 2 and The Witcher 3.

I haven’t repasted out of fear of bricking my machine.

I didn’t even want or need a thin laptop, I chose this model because a similar Titan or Area-51 was at least $1000 more.

Reduce the undervolt on the cache slider and keep the cores at -80mV, put the cache at like -60mV and see how it behaves.

Also, how would you brick the laptop with a repaste?

Just use some IPA wipes and remove old paste. Add a thin layer of new paste on the system, preferably something better for thin form factor. I used MX-4 for the MSI GS65 and with some core clock hardstops and power reductions, temps dont go higher than 70C under load when playing TD2 and Tarkov. Paste gets very chunky after some intense usage and I wouldn't be surprised if its reached that stage for your machine.
