pretty good temps. With the cooler running I wouldnt even run turbo fan. It will stay just as cool I think with just the cooler on. If you want even cooler temps, re-paste the CPU and GPU with some IC7 or 24. Its so easy to get to the CPU and GPU to re-paste in this notebook it should be done by everyone to get cooler temps and dont have to worry about knowing wither or not it was done right at the factory.
-
Here's mine idle, with I7 920xm. I've repasted both CPU and GPU with
Noctua NT-H1 + Notepal X2 cooler + Turbo fan
Cold in my room too though xD

I just bought my gx660 i5 model last month, I am really impressed with its temperature and sounds on music. But lately I have a problem when playing games like dragonage, masseffect, and other games. It freezes for a few seconds (1-2 sec) and sometimes it irritates me.
Is it a hardware problem or do I have to update or download something to fix this? The temperature is fine, it stays around 60+.
One more thing, when I played a game i just installed recently, fallout Vegas, the game freezes. The background sound is still running but the game is on freeze mode.
Any help guys? -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
What ATI drivers are you running?
Also is this all games, or only a select few? -
wzzap dudes, i have a situation, today my battery said that the powercable is connected but the battery aint charging!? never had this problem before...anyone have a solution?
-
answer 2: fallout nv is quite buggy make sure you have latst patch.
on a side note falllout nv wasent automatically updated by steam for ages even tho the patch had been out for about a month :[ eventually it did update -
Guys sorry for insisting on a already discussed topic, do you think the Diablo lll could be considered a CPU consuming game? Would i be able to play it in the i5 processor?
Ah, also haven't had time to read this whole forum yet but until now this machine seems to be more fool prof than the asus G73(that seems to be having a couple persistent problems), is that correct, or does it have its own problems?
I'll try reading it all later.
Thx. -
Only problem I have found with this machine is a lan error that sometimes happens on cold boot. A three fingered slaute fixes it every time though.

I found that a few micro stutter issues can be caused by a poorly managed power profile.
Make sure your power profile is set to High Performance rather than Balanced. This solved my friends issues.
Otherwise something was mentioned in this thread regarding either the WD Scorpio or Seagate drives having an inherent issue which causes this load delay. A kind owner has posted a solution to the issue as well, although it may involve replacing the drives -
I have sometimes noticed that while the batery is relatively charged (90%+) with the power cable connected, windows does state that the mains line is (connected, not charging). I solved this issue by disconencting the mains line and allowing the battery to discharge to around 90% before reattaching it. It seems that the system itself opts not to charge the battery if it is within a certain percentage of maxmum capacity. After allowing it to discharge just below 90% it will charge up correctly.
If the battery is retaining no charge at all and displaying 0% charge, check the contacts, reattach and see if it helps. Leave the system conencted to mains while off and see if the amber battery light turns on. If so, it is at least attempting to charge it.. but if the battery continues to retain 0% charge i'm afraid it may be dead.
I hope you get it solved. -
I don't want to beat a dead horse with the same question, but i have noticed that the 5870M in the GX660R ive been working on maxes at 75 degrees (as recorded by MSI Afterburner / HWinfo32) while gaming (Metro 2033).
The memory however can climb up to and above 90 (GPU-Z) while the other temps float around 70-75... which is the temp reported by monitoring software. Anything to worry about or perfectly fine?
Edit: on a lighter note, allthough i am still not a fan of the MSI GX660R's rather flimsy case, it is by far one of the best price - performance machines i have had the pleasure to use. The clevo chassis are nicer and sturdier overall (better screen, much worse audio D, but for under £1000 the 474 model is unbeatable.

hi, im new here, just want to ask some questions...ive got a gx660 i5 460m, 161F PM55 bios E16F1IMS VER1.09 on cpu-z, is bios update from msi site, for gx660r compatible for my unit? im planning to upgrade 1 more hdd then set it to raid...thanks
-
As far as i'm aware, the (R) indicates raid compatability. If you did indeed purchase a GX660 (not GX660R) there is a VERY high chance that flashing the GX660R bios would not only fail to provide raid support, but would also brick your system.
Raid isn't all that great anyhow
You can download the latest BIOS from here: MSI Global ? Notebook - GX660
Best of luck.. but if your system is performing well with no obvious issues i would shy away from flashing the bios all together. -
I've flashed the GX660R bios once before on my GX660, and it worked.
I don't have 2 hdd's though, but it gave me the possibility to use raid in bios , so it should work.
Rhadamanthis also did it once, and I remember hearing it was a success
I wont take any responsibility though.
Got a nice new record on 3dmark06 too
Result
This is with a QS core from Ebay, works great and all that.
Throttlestop settings : 95W/75A - 25/25/25/25 - Multipliers
Afterburner settings : 910/1100 - with modified vbios. With the stock one, the benchmark test would crash around 870/1075
so I edited the voltage
GPU Z Picture
I've also received some messages about my vbios file.
I edited my bios with RBEclock, from 1.05V to 1.15V, and just flashed it.
If you're interested in it, pm me and i'll send you my vbios.
You can do this easily yourself by taking a backup of your vbios with gpu-z then edit it with RBEclock ( edit clock 00 from 1.05 to 1.15 ) then flash. -
@Zalgradis
@Uyski
thanks for the replies...anyways, im planning to add another hdd, so might as well try raid, and also waiting for ssd's price drop...upon reading/searching, some/all GX660R has the PM55 chipset/mobo, same chipset of the GX660 non "R" series (correct me if im wrong)...i tried mailing msi support about raid capabilities and bios update using "R"s bios but havent replied yet.. -
yes i can confirm, i have a msi gx660@gx660R. i have flashed bios gx660r on gx660 and i have a gx660r with bios raid option
-
@Rhadamanthis
thanks for your reply...i tried mailing msi, asking them if its possible to flash my bios with gx660r, they havent replied yet..anyways, can you post screen shots of your system, motherboard details using cpu-z, if weve got the same motherboard details..thanx in advance...( and also what bios file did you use?) -
-
hi all, just wondering if there is a way of me stopping the 'check your backup' flagged error in windows 7 due to the shared drives not being able to completley backup all my content? im backing up on my data drive, but because of the raid 0 it thinks its backing up itself onto the same drive.
I know i could backup onto another external drive but i dont have one. -

Just updated to the new BIOS from MSI, was scary as hell!
The screen was all black for like 7 seconds before I saw the MSI logo
No issues etc, just wanted to have my bios updated -
-
Yes, on my non r version
-
I have bought the GX660R. Excellent laptop. I upgraded from a XPS M1730 with a SLI 9800m GT cards and Phyxs but the single 5870 in the little MSI is more powerful.
The screen on the MSI is a bit poor though! It has blacks that are a bit grey.
My one came with the i5 460m.
Is it worth upgrading this? To what?
The Intel wireless card (1000AGN) is a bit rubbish too.
Can I upgrade to a Intel Ultimate 6300? -
i got the ultimate 6300 installed on my pc, works wonderfull
-
I upgraded to QS 920xm for 300$. Cpu score increased by like 105% in 3dmark06
-
-
How did you install it? Do I have to remove the front panel?
And I just have to replace the old intel one right? 2 antenna cables or something if I understand it? -
, no heat problems, also i wanna say guys upgrade the HDD drivers to the new 10.0.0.1046 works amazing if you have a SSD on your machine
-
-
the driver is not on the intel site xD get them here intel drivers pour Raid/Sata/Ata/Ahci
-
Just got my ROCCAT KONE +
Check the pics, it goes really well with the gx660 + it's awesome!
Pretty simple, but the wallpaper goes well with my laptop + mouse
-
I just tried HD Tune on my Corsiar F60.
My result is a little low compiared to Thanatospy raid system.
Any tips how to improve?Attached Files:
-
-
your results are fine bro, i got a raid0 setup thats why i get higher numbers, there is a lot of tweaks for the registry to make the sdd work better but after all the tests i made the best you can do is a fresh win7 install with sp1, and the driver mentioned before, works wonderfull
-
I've got an question..
I got the GX660 (non R) .. with the Intel I5 + 1366x768 screen..
When i read at notebookcheck it says ultra in starcraft 2 should be playable.. but I think it's a bit laggy.. is there something i've forgot?
High runs smooth though -
-
On ultra it can be a laggy under mass destruction ~7-15fps (tower wars, ect.), but normal multi runs ok on ultra ~25-35fps. -
I've done an clean install of windows 7, got the latest ATI drivers and so on..
Anything I might have forgotten?
Edit: Must have been something temporaryI tried again now and on Ultra it runs like 35-60fps.. seems ok..
Edit2: Ctrl + Alt + F to show FPS in Star2 -
Any1 else got the issue that the "Msi Gamingmouse" stops working?
It works fine but then without a warning it suddenly stops working..
Any way to fix?
Edit: This thread seems 2 be pretty dead -
Hey all, just did a fresh install of Win7 64HP onto my new Corsair F120 120gb SSD and its amazing. I wish I had bought one of these things earlier. But my question is where can I get one of the HD brackets? I had to just put the SSD drive in, and then used electrical tape to make sure it didn't dislodge, but thats only a temporary fix for me. I want something that will give me more peace of mind.
Anyone know where I can get a GX660 HD bracket? -
-
I am having problems with my new Corsair F160 SSD. Its seems that on boot the ssd is not being detected and therefore the laptop says that it can't boot. But a crtl alt delete seems to make it make.
Anyoen notice this problem? -
sandforce+pm55=FAIL
sorry to hear that pras1011 you should read before get that ssd
, there is no solution yet about that problem
-
Well I'm having absolutely no problem with my sandforce and PM55... At least not yet. It's fast and responsive. Maybe the boot priority? Its a shot in the dark, but its worth a shot.
I believe mine goes like this..
DVD Drive
Seagate HD
Crucial SSD
Realtek Something -
Thanks. I tried changing the boot order but that didn't work. I will just have to do crtl alt del after power on for a while until there is a fix.
Onto another issue. I am having trouble finding the ATI High Definition Audio driver. Do you know where it is? -
Is it worth 250$ saving to exchange this one for the GT660 with I5 + GTX285m ?
Cous i heard that Nvidia performs much better in games like GTA4, I think 5870 performs pretty poor in GTA4. -
-
The bios detects the SSD but only after a while when I turn on the laptop. But an error message pops up stating "reboot and boot into a proper....".
After a restart (not power down restart) the ssd is detected. -
