Uh. Question. Anyone know how to get another HDD Caddy for the system? Lets just say I had a bit too much... "torque" when changing it out.
Heh. -

Wut. I demand pictures!
In any case, ask one of the resellers (Ken, Justin, Donald, etc) for a price quote, or maybe contact MSI directly to see if they sell them. -

I own the GX660 and am wondering if I should remove the li-ion battery whilst playing games due to the higher temperatures which according to my reading, ruins battery life?
-
because now day, i have upgrade my i5 460m to i7 620m and i see 2 slot...
There are one three hidden? -

3rd ram slot is under the keyboard along with the WIFI card.
I upgraded those the other day. Easy upgrade! I love the 12 GB RAM. Can't wait until I figure out how to get these HDDs back in a RAID configuration, check out the 06 and 3D Vantage scores. -
max 8 gb

Because the back-up on the GX660 didn't work, I need to send my laptop for 2/3 weeks to MSI.. I'm wondering if I should do it.. 2/3 weeks are freakin long..

Newegg.com - Intel 622AN.HMWWB Mini PCI Express 6200 Centrino Advanced-N Wireless Adapter Up to 300Mbps Wireless Data Rates 64/128-Bit WEP, WPA, WPA2
Found that easily enough, got it all shipped with the RAM.
....It's nice of you people to ask - but for the most part everyone's asking me these strange questions. I'm not really some laptop expert (per-se). Guys, I'm in law school. So, uhm. You ask me 'where I find these things' and 'how to install'
I uh... read the manual that came with the computer. It has instructions on how to disassemble and upgrade certain parts! That's how I've done it!. I know I know. But that's how those of us with a liberal arts education and graduate education learn.
Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!
And the wireless was a slight bit of pain? But once I got it all in it was simple. Install drivers etc. etc.

The 3rd RAM slot is on the OTHER SIDE of the motherboard. Under the keyboard. It's hard to explain it another way. Take the keyboard off. Take a look. You should find the RAM slot. Forge has pictures in this thread. Or linked some pictures somewhere. Take a peek. On one side of the Mobo are 2 RAM slots. The other side has the WIFI and 3rd RAM slot. Now that I've upgraded those two things, I hope to never have to go in there ever again. Because that disassembly was a pain in the...... well you know the expression -

Oh! For all those that are looking for parts/replacements/whatever your MSI needs?
RK Computers-MSI-Asus-Sager-Clevo-Compal - Custom Gaming Notebooks - Custom Gaming Laptops
So far the best site I've seen for anything that needs replacing (like my HDD mounting bracket!)
I might even grab one of those non-chicklet 1651 keyboards and attempt to place it in my GX! Because I'm not on board with this "chicklet style" thing if I can help it! -
I've had my GX660R for about a week, and while the screen has no dead or stuck pixels, there's a strange problem with the screen I noticed while using it with sunlight behind me. The screen seems to be covered with little specks, almost as if there was some finish improperly applied. Some of the specks have a circular halo around them, also. All of these can be seen with the display off, but only with a light source directly on them. In normal use, they aren't visible, so I'm debating whether to send it back. Anyone seen anything similar to this with their laptop? I should add that these spots don't come out with cleaning.

My first Acer 3820TG had an AUO panel with same problems, later on I got another 3820TG (great 13" lappy) but it had an defective fan. So I switched the monitors. I got rid of the AUO panel in favor of an Samsung panel that is better -
Just to let others know, the GSOD is not a dead issue with the 5870m, at least on the MSI GX660. I've had my GX660 about two weeks or so, and last night out of nowhere it started to GSOD during BC2, I was getting random gray screen flickers. I rebooted, and started a new game and it gray screened and locked up, and forced me power button restart. I am running the latest 10.10 drivers. I updated my vbios from what was stock, or whatever shipped with this laptop, to the lastest vbios posted on the msi website, and was able to game in BC2 for about 2hrs straight without a single issue. Also the new vbios seemed to increase my fps and smoothed out frames? Weird, but whatever it all seems good now. I'll report back if I get any more issues. I was getting scared I was going to have to RMA already which would have sucked, and I would have lost my faith in MSI products.
Also, I am not the first to have this issue, I googled searched GSOD MSI GX660, and found 2 other people having the same issue.
Edit:
Those 2 cases I found can be found here on this board on the MSI support forums.
http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=141358.0
Also, I did not even attempt to try a different driver first so I don't know if it could be the that caused it. But I pretty much gamed on 10.10 for 30hrs without a problem over the last couple weeks. :/ -
So far I haven't had problems with my stock card so I don't plan to upgrade, but it would be nice if someone with the same issue upgrades and confirms as well that the few GSoDs get fixed that way. -
. The only manual I got was the .pdf version, which I looked through and found no such information. This .pdf version is also what I found on the site (unless they've put up a new one).
Anyways, thanks for the info. -
Got my GX660R a 2 weeks ago, and it came with an i7-720QM. it is possible or easy for me to upgrade that to a i7-740 or most probably a i7-820? thanks

Just in case anyone hasn't seen this:

The guide on how to disassemble this notebook. -
Thanks for posting that, Moral
.
I'm a little shocked at how messy it looks inside the laptop, from seeing the pictures in that manual. Do most laptop brands look that poorly put together on the inside, or is MSI just "special"? -
Why make something look pretty when 99% of the owners will never see it?
Internal laptop design is purely for efficiency not aesthetics as most of them once built will never be opened again. -
Are there any other PSUs other than the Targus 180W that will work with this laptop?
Just plugged the laptop it into my watt-meter and its drawing 130W from the wall while playing Black Ops with no battery in -

Yeah, tenikis is right, I for most of my life I was too scared to open anything up. Afraid I might "ruin it."
Other than the few, the proud, and the curious of us here on this forum (and a few others), how many people are going to get inside that sucker and tweak it?
The guide in my manual wasn't so... thorough. It was just "here's where the RAM slots are, here's where the HDDs are, here's how you get to those."
They don't exactly... encourage us... to get into the CPU or the LCD screen.
But I'm REALLY GLAD they show us how to get into the LCD screen. Now, I just need to find a FHD Matte screen.
They exist, right? -
The psu that comes with it is 120w right?
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
120W, yes.
Well, now I know why it throttles when I'm OCCT stressing it. -
Gonna try the 150w Targus for 20 notes. Cant seem to find the 180w one anymore in the UK. Its on ebay for 40 odd from USA but Ill have a run with the 150 and see whats what.
-
I'm wanting to OC the 940xm too but running IBT on stock clocks increases the power draw to 120W - with no GPU load!
OC'ed GPU + an OC on the CPU is going to be about another 50W on top of that. -
Let me know if you find anything in the UK. I had a mooch and couldnt find much apart from the 150 Targus.
The 180 is available here if interested, will have to change the plug of course
Targus APA05US Home/Office 180W Universal AC/DC Adapter on eBay (end time 30-Nov-10 17:49:07 GMT) -
I went for the 150W. For £20 you can't go wrong
-
-
Yea, they pretty much all look equally as crap inside as this one...

Got the Targus 150w this morning and had a quick play with it (use the yellow tip adaptor.)
Tried the OCCT psu test with stock 940m settings and I ran it for 10 mins without a problem.
Went on to test throttlestop a bit and got these results @ 28/23/21/19
2t: 3.61ghz
4t: 2.99ghz
6t: 2.74ghz
8t: 2.52ghz
This is with the stock TDP/TDC settings in Tstop and temps dance around the low 80s. I've had it go a fair bit higher but I really dont like the temps its hitting at these higher speeds at all! It seems the only thing holding it back is some decent cpu cooling.
I might have a look at doing something to it to get temps down but Its running pretty well now and I am quite happy what I am getting from it. -

Was the 80 degrees C with active or passive cooling? Using the "Cooler Boost" function at all?
Just curious. I think I'm going to grab a 920xm myself. I hear they run a bit cooler than the 940s without too much sacrifice in CPU power.
Oh, is the PSU compatible with the battery? Or did you have to remove it from the chassis? -
The 80c is with the stock cooling the laptop comes with and without the coolerboost enabled, although its pretty much enabled as mine kicks in around 80c cpu anyway.
PSU worked fine out of the box. Yellow tip adaptor and away you go -
i have flash bios gx660r in gx660 notebook,.
now i have GX660R hihihihihihi -

Who knows. Theoretically it could be possible. I saw a GX660 Bracket/Caddy on sale at a reseller of MSI things when looking to replace one I broke (extra torque when removing a stock HDD to replace it with something else caused the metal to bend out of place and crack), so I assume that you can fool the BIOS flash if you have another HDD installed in the notebook in the GX660 empty space.
But the screen resolutions are different on the two models. Wouldn't a basic BIOS flash know what the native resolution is supposed to be?
Maybe the non-US models (I assume Rad is not a US-based customer, since his posts sound like he uses an online translator. Which is fine given the international nature of NBR) have different specifications. I haven't really taken the time to look.
I'm not "that" technical, so someone can explain it to me -
yes i have the option
my friend that have tested works raid, i use 2nd hd for storage only -
the process is simple
download the bios final 3d for gt660 raid, flash it in dos with usb stick auto start ( after you copy the bag in the hard drive of usb stick, type flash in dos and finally work the mod ). i use istructions in the msi site.
my mainboard is MS-16F1 REV. 12 and i flash bios E16F1MS VERS. 3.0D -

Bueno Rhad. Grazie.
And good work! I didn't even think of using the GT660R BIOS because of the nVidia card. That will help others that want to get the GX660 and not spend the extra money on the R-version! -
So for the GX660 that don't come with a second hd, a caddy needs to be bought?
-
how come I have the gx660r with an i7 processor and my ram is only rated at 1066? It should, according to all sources, be at 1333
-
-
i7 740qm which fully supports 1333
