Is it safe to factory reset a GT60 with updated bios, firmware, and windows 8.1 back to windows 8 (with MSI Burn Recovery)? (I want to reinstall windows on a ssd for optimal performance.)

Everything's up-to-date.
What setting do you have in the screen resolution? Is the internal monitor disabled? Are you using the external as primary monitor? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Yes, this is fine. -

Hello all, new to the forums and just got my MSI GT60 20C-022us.. I also purchased a Samsung 840 EVO 250gb to add some extra speed. I would like to set up the hard drives as follows.
- C:\ to be the entire Samsung SSD Drive (windows boot drive)
- D:\ to be the entire 1tb HDD that came with it
- Would still like to be able to utilize the MSI Recovery feature if possible
I'm not really sure how to accomplish this however. I know that the default comes with 2 partitions on the HDD. I installed the SSD in the open bay, ran the Samsung data migration of the existing C:\ (OS_INSTALL) and then switched the places of the drives. This left me with C:\ and D:\ unchanged and E:\ being the SSD that windows is booting from. I'm fine with doing a clean install if needed and I've created the USB restore image, but when I try to boot it (using F3) it takes me to a windows 8 Automatic Repair program it seems, not the MSI one.
Does anyone know how to accomplish this? Is there something else that I left out that I need to be doing? -

Have you changed in the BIOS the hard drive boot order to put the SSD as the primary boot drive.
-
I couldn't seem to find where to change this option BIOS. All I was able to find in relation to boot order just gave me one option of Windows Boot Manager.
I did however resolve this. Below are the steps I followed incase anyone was wondering.
Removed the HDD and then booted from Recovery disk while only the SSD was attached.
Restored ONLY the OS Drive (this only creates the C:\)
Then installed the HDD in the secondary bay and then formatted the 2 volumes that were OS_INSTALL and Data from the original MSI installation (I used Disk Management that's part of the Win8 admin tools)
Then created one volume with the unallocated space that is now a little over 900gb since I left the recovery partitions on the HDD as well. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Some SSD + HDD configuration will leave recovery partition on the HDD instead of SSD. -

Yes windows likes to leave the boot partition on another drive sometimes which is why I only leave one drive in when installing the OS.

wheres the bios update

Looks like I have a some problems with my screen. A few bright spots just appeared on the screen. The brightness is visible in white/ish background only. I am thinking of buying a replacement screen and would like to ask what is the best place/website to buy the screen from.
Do you know, is there a specific model of the screen that is better than others. ( I current have LP156WF1(TL)(F3) model but it appears to be discontinued).
is there a guide on how to disassemble a screen cover? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
That's considered a defective screen, if it's under warranty then contact MSI to get it replaced. -
Kevin@GenTechPC
no possible solution of my problem?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Sorry, it looks like a motherboard problem which requires the motherboard to be replaced. -
very strange, the bios updates disappeared from the download page
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Which version of BIOS do you need? -
I think my BIOS is the latest one, I have Version E1763IMS.50T for my GT70 2OC running windows 7 SP1 64bits
I was just wondering why did MSI removed the BIOS from the download page ( MSI France GT70 2OC ) and where is the new location if there is one (for future updates). -
Perhaps updating? It's not removed from here: MSI Global GT70 2OC
-
probably updating. Thanks for the link.
-
Hi Kevin. Unfortunately i have already disassembled the computer to nuts and bolts so warranty is not applicable. Also It is a lot more convenient for me to just order a replacement screen the reason I am not so sure is that the screen I have currently installed is from 2009 and was discontinued so I am trying to find a better newer screen. There are several manufacturers that offer screens of similar type however I am not sure which one would be the best.

The AUO 90% gamut panel is very good.
-
Can you tell me the exact screen model?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
You can still get warranty service if your screen is the original one and if you are in the US. -
ups, wrong thread :$

Hi,
Can anyone tell me is it possible to upgrade the 770m to 780M. If yes, then how, is it possible to get the detailed instructions.
Please excuse me for my limited knowledge.
Cheers -

Get an msi card and heatsink and physically swap them. A new heatsink would have paste and pads pre installed for use. Plug and play.
-
Thank you for your reply, that sure sounds easy.
what about the bios update or change watver it is since i ll be upgrading the card, and where can i find the card from -
Hey all,
Been really long since I've posted here. I think last time I logged in here was 5 months back. Just been enjoying my notebook. best purchase ever.

Finding the card is the hard part. Other brands of card may work but may require a bios flash (may not at the same time). -
Meaker, say i m getting 780M Gtx card which is from Nvidia ofcourse, so where can i grab a good deal and installation instructions
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Have you tried looking for MXM card installation on youtube and looked for cards on ebay?
-
Yeah, its surprising how i could miss the ebay and youtube part, anyways thanks for your assistance here

Sometimes the seller is kind enough to offer advice on installation as well, although an instruction video will help you out the most.

Question. How do you handle the heat? Do you just play with the turbo fan mode on constantly? I keep having heat issues in my GT60, and it throttles performance, about 10-15 mins after beginning a game of Borderlands 2.
EDIT: It seems limiting the multiplier to 26 T, and setting the fan to 70% helps a lot, keeping it around 62 C, but it was never really the GPU temp that was the problem, it was the CPU, getting up to 90 C without that utility. Is that normal, or should I look at repasting? -
Hey all, new to forums here. Rejoining the PC gaming industry after a long abscence. Been playing console games for long time. Just purchased the MSI GT60 20C-024. Now seriously wondering if I should have gotten the newer GT60 dominator with the upgraded processor and video card however. It would only cost me about 120$ more when all said and done with return shipping and all. Worth all the hassle to return/ship back and all???
-
Oh man, I did one of the most careless things ever today. I was watching videos in my bed with the laptop on a support base and at one time I was trying to reach for something and somehow I managed to hit it, making it fall on the floor. Luckily it's still in one piece and everything seems to be working fine, although I should check the inside to see if there's any issue.
So, well, at least I know it's sturdy... I don't suggest attempting this, though
.
-
I took back my 20C-022 for this same reason. I'm supposed to be getting the new Dominator 424 on Tuesday so I can tell you what difference I see in some benchmarks but from what I've read the upgrade from the 770m to the 870m is supposed to be around 30%, which was enough for me to make the switch since I was still under the return period as well. I just couldn't sleep at night knowing I bought a laptop and then 3 days later the new versions were announced with the new hardware. Also keep in mind that the 8XXm series cards also have some more software features from nvidia like the Game DVR (not sure if they are backporting this to the 7xx/6xx series or not. The new Dominator also has the new SteelSeries engine software that allows you to create custom marcos. (not sure if MSI is backporting this to older models as well).. Just my 2 cents.
-
So any idea about heat?
-
Yeah, that seems to be what I have mostly read as well. I am going to return it for sure and get one of the newer ones with the upgraded 800 series GPU. Seems to make a big difference like you mentioned.

Is it possible to install an mSATA SSD for storage with an SSD already set as the boot drive on the GT70?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Yes, you can.
Simply install the OS onto the SSD as the sole drive in the system.
Once completed, then reconnect mSATA drive, and make sure to select SSD as your first boot device. -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
If your SSD is already installed and the OS is already on it. You can just physically install the mSATA then in Disk Management assign it a letter/path. -
Wow, thanks for the speedy response. Initially I presumed that there either wasn't an mSATA slot for it or there wouldn't be enough room because of the SSD already in there (I haven't actually opened it up yet). Now I just need to decide if I want to buy one now or wait for a sale.
BTW I kinda regret not getting a custom skin with you guys at XoticPC.
-
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
mSATA drives are a lot smaller physically so they can fit a couple with a regular hard drive.
The skins are pretty cool, especially since you can send in any image you want. -
My plan was to do white/black carbon fiber in such a way that the white is where there's red on the Dragon Edition and black everywhere else (except the reflective bits). I was hard-pressed for cash at the time, so I decided not to, but now that I have some extra cash I sorta wish that I did. If you guys did another skin sale as you had done a couple of years ago, I would have totally gone for it then.
Thanks again :hi2: -
Does anyone know how to check which application(s) are using my dedicated GPU? Occasionally after waking up my laptop from sleeping, or unplugging the HDMI cable, the power light will remain amber even though I do not appear to be running any programs that would be using the dedicated card.
Or is there any way to just turn off the dedicated GPU and then turn it back on so the application will crash or something?
Thanks!
EDIT: See this post for a fix. -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
If you originally got your computer from us you can always send it back to get skinned. It costs the same, you just need to pay for shipping both ways.
The only time I've seen the skins on sale is usually around Black Friday through New years. We do sometimes run sales around other times of the year like July 4th, maybe check around then. -
Yup, you can check and assign which programs/applications use the integrated or NVIDIA GPU under the "Manage 3D Settings" task in the NVIDIA Control Panel.
If you want real-time monitoring of NVIDIA GPU activity, enable "Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area" under the "Desktop" tab also in the control panel. A squarish icon will appear in your notification area, which will be grayed out when the GPU is inactive, and will turn orange-green when the GPU is active. Then simply click on it to show which program(s) are using the dedicated GPU. It's quite useful.
I don't know about manually turning off the dedicated gpu, though. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You can do it from an unlocked bios but that's a bit different. You can just set always use the igp and it does the same thing really.
-
Perfect! The activity icon was just what I was looking for! Thanks so much.
