Since my old Lappy is GX-630 which the temp can go crazy @89 during full gaming load and it's burn my hand. Two things that I want to know are

    - What is the temp during full gaming load or during 3dmark06?

    - Any Heat issue, since MSI have some reputation about having heat vent on the right side, which is not good for right - handed like me during gaming session.

I'm considering would buy MSI with 160m GTS rather than Asus G51 with 260m GTX due to the 3dmark score margin is not that far off

In short : any comment on heat issue?

    P. S.

a picture of HWmonitor would be appreciate

I'm not trying to discourage you from buying the GT628, I think it's a great laptop, but 3dmark06 is not an accurate indicator of performance anymore... the GTS160 and GTX260 are proof of that.

That said, there are many other reasons to prefer the MSI... weight, size, battery life... it's nice, and the GTS 160 is a very good card.

Most of my friends that has the g51 asus, got more heating issues, heck, read the asus g51 threads, their runs hot, we are talking about 90'C and some idles at 80-85"C. For me, in my opinion, thats a bit hot. But the thing is, asus has a great quality and all that stuff. Led backlit, illuminated keyboard. Etc. But GTS160M is a very very very good card. Its about comparable with the 9800M GT.

The GTS 160m compares more to the 9800m GTS, The 9800m GT is still faster..

So the 160m on the 628 is not significantly better than the 9800m GTS on the 627?

(9800m gs on the 627 is an underclocked gts)

according to the technival specificatoins, the 160 seems to have slightly higher clock speeds than the 9800, so the 160 should be a little bit faster.

9800m GTS 512 was 65nm. 9800m GTS 1gb is 55nm. GTS 160m is 45nm. 600/1500/800. All the same. 160GTS shud be more friendly overclockable and shud perform like a GTX 260M . With less heat produced. I have been waiting for this laptop. When 627 cameout, 628 was announced 1 month afterwards.

nope. No GPUs are 45nm. A couple of 40nm have been released (240m and 220m) but the GTS 160m is 55nm just like the 9800 GTS 1GB

Man, can't wait for this laptop to come out (yes i know barebones is out), but am waiting and waiting.

For the vendors, any new words on the release date? I'm sure they are as vague to you as they are to us....Late August to Early September? So close ..yet so far.

    Sorry if this seems dumb,

I am looking to maybe buy this laptop from xoticpc.com (their "FORCE 3551") and I was wondering if anyone here who owned it could post some pictures of it? Two big reasons I want it are: full sized keyboard on a 15"(!!!) and the remarkable performance.

So yeah, anyone care to post some pics?

Edit: I would really just like to see what it looks like. Most of the pictures online aren't very detailed and don't give a good view.

Hey guys, just got this laptop and it's great! But I had one quick question...

Somebody was talking about using setfsb to overclock earlier in this thread, but for the life of me I can't find what clock generator setting to use. Posting it would be great!

Well I used an EC update to swap the Fn and ctrl keys... and it looked like the turbo mode update would reverse that change (it looked like an EC update, not a BIOS update). Other than that, I want to see how far i can push the processor :)

I think oldmankdude may be in the wrong thread.

There is an Owners Lounge for the totally configurable MSI 1651 ID2 that might be more appropriate than this MSI Branded thread.

They are essentially the same laptop, but the other thread deals with the configurable version built and branded by custom builders, and barebones for do it yourself'ers

Thanks nacr05!! Ben always has good YouTube videos.

This thread completely deals with the configurable MS-1651 ID2 and all thanks to nacr05!!

This thread on the first page has a ton of comparisons, links, information, benchmarks, game scores, and a list of most the companies selling the MS-1651 ID2.

The first page is constantly updated by nacr05 with the latest links and information for the MS-1651 ID2.

    FYI:

The latest version of the MS-1651 ID2 you will now have the choice of either a 6 cell or 9 cell battery as the primary!! The previous versions were packaged by default from the manufacture with the 6 cell.

From the benchmarks i'm seeing, I would say that the 160m is on par with the 9800m gt, despite having 32 less shaders.

Is there an assembly manual for this? (there was for the gx720)

Well specs-wise the GTS 160M is exactly a 9800M GTS, although the smaller die might allow you to overclock it more to perform near 9800M GT levels.

It's been a while since I've been up to date on MSI laptops, but have MSI addressed any of the problems on the former GX620/GT627 chassis?

    I'm specifically talking about:
    - the keyboard flex
    - the screen bezel cracks
    - the touchpad wear(i.e. it becoming glossy after a few weeks of use).

This is my first MSI laptop and I am very impressed with the build quality.
I have the silver trimmed 1651-ID2( basically the same thing as the GT628) and it looks really sharp.
So far after about 3 weeks of daily use I have noticed NO touchpad wear whatsoever.
What keybooard flex! I was concerned about this as well but I can happily say there is none. The only keyboard flex there is is when you really mash the keys and if you type as hard as I was pressing then you have some anger isssues ;)
I can't comment on any screen bezel cracks because there is none! It is solidly built and I would not worry too much over that.
Performance is much better than expected, runs quiet, very thin and very easily upgradable to QUAD's if that's what you are looking for.
Over all it's a great laptop!
I would put it up there with a CLEVO M860ETU( slight edge goes to the CLEVO with slightly better performance and has a more overall solid feel and build quality but that could be because it weighs more and is a little thicker).

    Thanks for the input! ^_^

Yeah I knew the keyboard flex really wasn't bad at all, but I figured I'd ask anyways to see if they had changed the keyboard padding or something.

Glad to hear your touchpad is still going strong too :)

I bought the silver-trimmed version from AVA Direct. I have had it about a month.
    - Keyboard flex is still there but not horrible. It does flex a good amount on the middle left.
    - My screen bezel cracked within 5 days of receiving the unit. It started as a small crack in the upper left corner around the rubber standoff, and has progressed to about 3/4 of an inch long all the way to the edge of the bezel. This has created a flap of plastic at the very corner, that could catch on things, but it has not snapped off yet.
    - Touchpad is fine so far

AVA Direct has been great, however I bought this laptop to move overseas with, and they were not going to be able to get it repaired in time for me to leave the country. So I just had to glue to bezel crack. The KB flex was helped with a little bit of double-sided tape from the "How-to" FAQ from these forums.

Overall I do like the unit a lot, and it is exactly what I wanted. I am just upset at the bezel crack
