Purchased msi gt72vr 7re back in March,

While playing games the system rebooted randomly,

Sent the laptop to msi, they installed BIOS 86.04.5B.00.82 and limits 1070 clock to 1443mhz.

Msi told me they are working with nvidia to resolve this issue, but it seems is taking a lot of time and the 6RE version of this laptop, from August 2016, suffers from this.

This is a warning to people that are interested in buying a msi laptop with 1070 gtx.

    - Bios version installed by MSI, 86.04.5B.00.82, DEBUG vBIOS, clocks 1443/3606
    - Dragon Gaming Center / Turbo mode does not work
    - Loss of 5/10 fps on games and benchmarks
    - Loss of 600mhz, before it could reach 1900mhz while playing games
    - Affects other MSI models with 1070, GT73VR, GT62VR, GT72VR
    - The GT72VR 6RE, laptop from August 2016, has this issue, so its been months and no official fix

How to know if you are affected:
    - Defective units: K1608N, K1609, K1610N, K1611N - not all of them, a few of them
    - Working units: K1703N - all 2017 builds
    - Play low-stress games like Witcher 1, AC Black Flag, Wolfenstein New Order, etc
    - Use default settings: Bios, Nvidia, gpu/cpu clock

    Real solution:
"The vbios isn't bad. The problem isn't with MSI directly. The problem was Nvidia releases some 1070 cards with had problems with the "boost 2" clocks. The 8A Bios disables the boost 2 clocks that occur above the boost clocks. Most of the 2017/Gen7 models have a newer revision of the GTX 1070 which fixes this problem."
    - Ask MSI for refund or new GPU with new revision, or a new laptop.

    Other solutions:
    - Install 8A vbios boost to 1650mhz
    - Install vbios official and use afterburner to downclock the gpu boost

Hey Hugodra, I found plenty gaming videos on youtube with the gt72vr running gtx 1070 while waiting for mine to come back from MSI. User deadphoenix86: https://www.youtube.com/user/DeadPhoenix86 ... his card is overclocked and he never had issues with it, in some videos you can clearly see it boost over 1900 MHz, but mostly actually keeps above 1600 (afterburner ftw). Thus it seems it CAN run at those speeds with no issues. His temps are also ridiculously low, not sure how that's even possible as he claims his laptop stands on switched off laptop pad and has only the cooler booster on... But yeah, he got very lucky. If you have more questions you can also contact him (regarding vbios etc), he has replied to every comment I posted on his videos and seems really helpful. ;)

    Thank you.

Coolerboost 4 does cool the laptop way down, but makes a lot of noise.

My S/N is K1611 and the vbios installed is 86.04.31.00.0D. How can i check if my notebook is affected by this problem? The core frequency during game reaches over 1800 sometimes and it crashed only one time so far.

Well... do you ever get any game freezing/crashing onto desktop/crashing the notebook completely? This also has to appear across many games for it to be a notebook rather than game specific issue. I guess the only way is to play a lot and see?

oh and if you do experience issues, try to update your vbios and stuff, there seems to be a more recent one on the support page for your model.

One major crash with reboot so far, but I own this notebook only for a month. Any particular game, benchmark that is known for causing crashes?

To be honest, a single crash can be caused by anything and as long as it doesn't happen repeatedly you probably have nothing to worry about. Other than the issue Hugodra is talking about, it can be caused by a bad driver, by error in windows, by many other things including viruses. Some with this problem seem to crash consistently within minutes in pretty much any game, for some it seems more random. Turbo speeds over 1800 MHz on the card appear to be intended and also nothing to worry about. My old asus suffered from random shut downs every couple weeks and tbh, I lived with it for 4 years before figuring out it was probably a faulty hdd or whatever my bf did when exchanging it for SSD. Just learn to save stuff often. It's useful even if the machine works like a wonder, cause one day it may just stop. By the end of the day, you have warranty to lean on if you believe sth is really wrong.

One major crash in what game? keep playing that game and see if that happens again.

3D Mark Ice Storm, test it,

Other games: Ghost Recon Wildlands, Wolfenstein New Order

Yes he needs to worry about, MSI doest not repair the laptop or exchange for a new one, all they do is install a vbios that limits the GPU clock regarding this issue.

In other words, you are not getting the full performance you paid for.

They said to me to wait for a new vbios that will fix everthing, but theres many folks with this problem since July 2016, 10 months almost and no new vbios !

Total War Warhammer, during a battle. Many units on screen but I've played other battles with even more filled field

    Ice Storm normal or Extreme?

Ice Storm normal, try it 8 times, no need to do it now, run benchmark two times, then other day, try again

Also try Wolfenstein New Order or Old Blood, Project Cars, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Bulletstorm (or the Remaster)

Don't get me wrong, if he indeed does have the same issue as you it is a reason to go and smash it over someone's head and demand a refund. What I meant was more like, it only happened once in 2 months and he is not even on the latest drivers/vbios etc for his model. I honestly thought that the problem you have was so unbearable that it happened pretty much every time you played a game (or did I get the wrong impression?) At least I use my laptop daily for many hours and would definitely thus happen more than once a 2 months... Which I will see when it comes back.

I understand what you are saying, but i know what is going on, the problem is not related to drivers/software.

When your PC/Laptop reboots without any bluescreen or error, its an HW issue.

This problem doesnt affect all games, but vast majority of them,

He seems that the games hes playing right now, doesnt do anything to the laptop, so no problem

I only found out about this problem, 2 months after i bought it, because i was playing Mafia 3 - big game - and no problems.

Back in April i purchased Bulletstorm Remaster, and it happened all the time.

So he could be playing Fifa for one year, i dont know about this.

The problem only happens on games that are low stress level, the card can boost to higher clocks -1900- 2000 mhz and system reboot

The strange situation is that there are lots of people with same SPECs, same laptop, same vbios, and no problem.

What happened to your laptop @heliada ?

I don't know if you spoke to @Rain777 some more on another thread or privately, but from the little he posted here you really can't tell if there was any bsod or at least error in event viewer. Even if there was kernel power error for example (which results in shut down or reboot without bsod), it could be due to faulty gpu, motherboard, power supply, battery or as in my case it was a faulty hdd. Does not automatically mean he has the same issue as you do. I do agree however he should test his laptop out properly and take it up with MSI if sth is off, same as you should do... again. And again and again until they either refund you/replace your gpu or whatever is faulty or give you a different laptop. I don't know what is up with my laptop yet unfortunately as it has only been 10 days and I was told it takes 14-17 days or even more if needed. Next week I will visit the retailer and demand an update on the situation if they do not let me know since I am missing it already.

EDIT: nvm I found a post by you in gt73vr thread and it was indeed kernel power error. There can be many reasons for this, but in general it means the laptop lost power suddenly due to power supply fault or some piece of HW taking too much juice which should not happen.

When the GTX 1070 goes too far above boost 2 speed, it's supposed to be limited by "vrel" (voltage reliability) flag in GPU-Z, preventing it from crashing.
At 2100mhz I get VREL flag.
    (Valley benchmark end screen).
Do you not get the VREL flag?

I did the testing with Ice Storm a few times. No crashing so far, but still something strange. At the beginning of the 2nd graphic test there is a clear coil wine sound coming from the notebook, and checking the Perfcap reason in gpu-z in that points i have green line saying Pwr.
    Maximum core clock is 1911Mhz.

A quick google search points to your laptop hitting the power limit. Coil whine on a new laptop seems kinda odd to me, especially at this price range I would expect better quality checks. At this point you know more or less what is happening, but I doubt anyone here can help you improve the situation. I would take contact with an MSI service center if you have one in your country by phone (which is how it works here in europe), where you can ask for someone with technical knowledge to advise you if this is normal behavior considering the crash/potential more crashing.

PWM can cause coil whine during loading, and the only fix is to replace the graphics card itself.

But what is going on with your laptop? you didnt explain yet.

Tell me the first digits of your serial number "K1609N" for example, whats your laptop? model?

Yes it can be many things, but, @Rain777 synthopms looks like is the same problem as me.

MSI does not refund or change anything, they install .82 vbios that limits the graphics card, thats it.

You are using what vbios version now? Could you test with official MSI vbios? .14 or .0D?

Im not using GPU-Z while playing or running benchmarks, but im using the .82 vbios with no boost, so no way to know that.

Its normal, because it hits 2000fps on Ice Storm, my friend with Asus laptop 1070gtx is the same.

    Perfectly normal.

Did you already told me whats your vbios version and first digits of serial number?

lol, but i did not ask you anything before man!

No problem, i thank your feedback and responses anyway!

Also, we are not getting anywhere, this problem exists in some laptops, and thats it.

The only conclusion i reach is this: all laptops build 2017 have no problems at all.

    P.S

    @specialist7 @Falkentyne

Tell me something , how many vbios are avaliable? im confused, never heard of 3A version before.

Please share with me all the vbios you have for MSI GT72VR 1070 GTX

I need at least the vbios .82 version, 1443mhz, because if i need to go back this one is working for me.

    Thank you very much

    A new update:

In the official MSI forum someone said the 2017 build laptops come with "second batch GTX1070 revision 1.2", and the 2016 build ones comes with 1070GTX 1.0

Major crash for me again today. Same error than last time in event viewer, screen turned all checkered and then the notebook rebooted itself. The game was the witcher 1, so a very light game.
Checking the gpu-z log I noticed that the frequency in the last 30 sec before crash was on the maximum 1911, and the voltage just before the crash bumped to 1.062, the highest recorded.
I think my notebook is indeed affected by some hardware related problem. I'm now trying to update the vbios to the latest on the official msi support site (86.04.56.00.3A) and see if it can fix the problem.

That sucks... let us know if it runs better after. Btw, you can also watch your GPU's clock, temps, voltage etc directly in real time inside any game. Look up on how to set up MSI afterburner with HWinfo. Works like a charm and could help you better see what is happening. Overlay in games can be annoying but will help monitor the behavior of your system until you figure it out or decide to send back to MSI.

That question was for heliada, sorry

You have the same issue with your laptop as me and others, there are no explanation for this issue yet.

You have two choices: accept your fate and use .82 vbios (1443mhz limit) .8A vbios (1645mhz limit), or you send it back and ask for a new laptop or repair.

MSI doesnt do anything if you RMA, they will install .82 vbios and send it back to you, thats what they did with my laptop

    update:

    from msi forum:

"First off, I have to say, this VIOS Works! (8A) gotta give it to the developer/creator.
I get the crash every game, and now, no more crash, not single one after this VBIOS update.

But I do have to agree with hugodrandrade.
This laptop is expensive for my lifestyle.
I bought this because I expect near perfection when it comes to what I need. I shelled out big bucks for a great, FAIR gaming experience.
But, obviously, I got the crashing issue all because of BAD MSI VBIOS. I f*ckng hate it. I feel like I'm being cheated by MSI because of this issue.
I'm not getting what I paid for.
MSI Support just said to return the laptop to where I bought it. yep..

This issue needs to be a top priority by MSI.
And all affected users shouldn't settle for less.
There should be an announcement or anything.
But it feels like the consumer announces this for them.

Thinking of switching my GT62VR to an Alienware.
And I do tell my friends and acquaintances that MSI GT series sucks. Because well, it does for me. sad.. I don't go into detail that this issue is for 1070s. I just tell them if they ask, that based on my experience, MSI is stressing.
Well MSI, that's what you get in the real world.
I don't hate MSI, just disappointed with what I've got.
Pretty sure other models are great, but hey, if people ate a bad french fry in Mcdonalds, most of the time, those people will say, "I don't like those fries", instead, "I don't like Mcdonalds".
    Peace!"

    Issue in details:

"The vbios isn't bad. The problem isn't with MSI directly. The problem was Nvidia releases some 1070 cards with had problems with the "boost 2" clocks. The 8A Bios disables the boost 2 clocks that occur above the boost clocks. Most of the 2017/Gen7 models have a newer revision of the GTX 1070 which fixes this problem."

How is the 3A vbios? just recently upgraded mine too. I have the same laptop as you same specs but in my case game crashes when i play dota2. Well, not really crashes, it just goes back to desktop screen and you can still hear the sound of the game working but couldnt go back to it visually. So I would restart the game again. However, Other games work like witcher 3, tomb raider, no crashes even when dc at max turbo mode, auto fan. So I think it just might be game related.

Tried @Hugodra 's suggestion of 3dmark Ice storm got a score of 127,093. GPU Core clock at 2000Mhz (Note: MSI afterburner configuration during this 3dmark was Core Voltage at +100, Core Clock +220, Memory Clock+450)

I have the serial number that was reported to have defects.

Got this laptop from HID with liquid ultra installed temps does not exceed 60-70 Celsius when gaming, 40-50 Celsius when standby.

This topic has gone on way too long (with nothing constructive proven anywhere) so let's take this a different way:

Are these cards (Both GTX 1070 and GTX 1080) supposed to boost *ABOVE* the boost clocks to begin with?

When using the 'Kboost" option in MSI afterburner (you need an EVGA precision skin for it) on a "fully working" GTX 1070, without any overclocking, the core clocks read 1845 mhz (base clock is 1445 mhz, boost clock is 1645 mhz), voltage is set to 1.05v (maximum) and GPU-Z spams "VREL" nonstop (voltage reliability). Of course, if you use +200 offset after doing this (basic 200 mhz overclock), MSI locks the card at 2065 mhz (On the desktop). Starting up a game and instant throttle back to around 16xx mhz. (but now with "PWR" being set with solid bars in gpu-z, probably due to the voltage bypassing TDP).

Do DESKTOP cards also boost ABOVE the main boost clocks like this?
(this is exactly what the "8A" Bios was supposed to prevent).

    So...bug or feature?

Trust me mate, is not the games, you might have a defective GPU.

The only vbios working fine are: 8A and 82, everything else not working on these defective gpus

Witcher 3, Rise of TR, those runs good, but some games crash, the majority of them are low-stress level games that crash: Wolfenstein New Order, Project Cars, Bulletstorm, etc

But there are a few exceptions, Ghost Recon Wildlands is crashing, and its a demading game.

The problem with testing games are two: the size and you need to pay for them, so i can say a few games that you can test your laptop, but you dont have the necessary space or time to install them or pay for them.

You need to install games that are confirmed to crash, also manual overclock makes the card more stable, so its more difficult to know if you have indeed any problems with your GPU

Use default clocks, dont change anything - confirm that you have problems first.

Then you can go, and install 8A Vbios, and overclock it to 1850mhz for example and test it to see how it runs.

    P.S

Since you ran 3d mark ice storm with 2000mhz clock, maybe you have no problems at all.

Please run 3D mark ice storm 5 times with default clocks and default vbios, tell me what happens.

lol, bug or feature? That question is for MSI, they should know what is going on.

You told me you have no problems with your laptop using the default vbios, other people with build 2017 laptops told me the same.

Yes there are enough proofs, there are not a single person with problems with build 2017 laptops, simple as that.

And since you have no problem with your laptop, i still dont understand what you are doing here, for example.

Why waste time, saying to people to forget this problem, since they paid a large amount of money for these defective laptops?

Go, enjoy your laptop, you already said and i agree, we are not getting anywhere, we cant do nothing about this problem.

The solution as i see, is to replace the GPU with new revision or the laptop with build 2017.

Yes all Pascal laptops are supposed to boost above default clock, check other brands like Asus, Clevo, Dell, all of them boost to 1900mhz. (in case of 1070 GTX)

My previous MSI laptop with 960m, boosted above default clocks from Nvidia as well...

    P.S

Again, how is possible that are people with 2017 build laptops working fine with original vbios?

The problem is not the boost, or the vbios, or the software.

    The problem is the GPU.

    You said this:

" The vbios isn't bad. The problem isn't with MSI directly. The problem was Nvidia releases some 1070 cards with had problems with the "boost 2" clocks. The 8A Bios disables the boost 2 clocks that occur above the boost clocks. Most of the 2017/Gen7 models have a newer revision of the GTX 1070 which fixes this problem."

lol, you dont remember what you said before ?...

So what's the point? You want to bomb MSI's headquarters or something?

What i want from MSI, is to know if the new official vbios that will come to fix this issue in the next months, will limit the clock of the gpu like 82 and 8A vbios?

If answer is yes, then i give them 3 choices:

    - Money back
    - New laptop
    - Replace the gpu with 1070 GTX revision 1.2

Already did, they said to wait for a new official vbios...

Then one week later, told me to install 8A vbios and overclock it... (and lied to me, they said 8A is official msi vbios o_O)

Last friday, i insisted with them again, told them the 2017 laptops and gpus are working fine, and i asked for a new gpu or laptop.

They said they were going to confirm with the brand if really the 2017 build laptop/new revision 1070 GTX is working 100% fine then will contact me.

They havent contacted me again with an answer yet, but it seems they dont want to waste money on resolving this issue with me... as you can see.

Im going to contact them again for news, i understand this is not MSI problem, but they need to resolve this situation with the clients.

Imagine you buy a ford car, with sony radio, the sony radio has issues but its sony problem, but Ford is the one that needs to fix the issue since the car brand is Ford...

Alright i will be trying them in default mode all might as well close all programs in the hidden icons tab.

Btw the 3d mark ive selected in steam after you press the launch button is the first one "Launch 3D mark Demo" (the one with no 32 bit nor 64 bit) and then i select Ice Storm, not the Ice storm extreme. Is that right? thats when i got the 2000mhz but that was with boost through afterburner. but ill try it 5 times as you instructed.

Dude, I feel you man, about your laptop. That's not right we know that, but nowadays business is business. I dont want to go politics or economy sht, but there's something really wrong with the people running this world today(economically speaking). I would advise you though to be persistent and always follow up your issue with them, just tell them what you've been doing/researching in the forums of owners with the same laptop, i think they would have nothing against that cause your actually doing a survey which is objective.

I'm hoping for the best for the both of us. Chill man, stress could shorten our lifespan which is equal to less playing time lol

I need your reply ASAP so that I know if my 3dmarking is right. Thanks!

Dude, closed everything in my hidden icon tab those are only left open are nahimic 2, intel rapid technology, steam, scm, nvidia settings and synaptics. then put i reseted my VR current limit in BIOS to 0. Then i tried running ice storm (for basic smarthpone and tablets) my gad my eyes widened, it crashed just like my crash in dota2. repeated and repeated it again still crashes.

What to do? I dont want to try out the 8A vbios, i would not get what i'm paying for. got this from HIDevolution. @Falkentyne helppp please!! T_T

    UPDATE:

I tried turning On Gysnc, and it finished the mark but got a score of only 29,256,core clock at 1443Mhz(GPU), 3,390 MHz(Max turbo clock, CPU)

    any suggestions? @Falkentyne , @Hugodra

    Hey,

Well, how can i chill ?

Theres a lot people affected with this issue, and 99.9% of that people installed chinese 8A vbios, and forget the issue.

I come here and other forum, no one cares and some are rude to me and tell me why im asking for the serial number, or why im asking for the vbios version they are using.

Some of them make fun of me too...

We live in a world that people dont like to help each other, simple as that.

More reasons to be furious with this situation:

    - Theres no information about this issue on the official FAQ page of all models affected by this issue - NO INFORMATION about anything , how is this possible?
    - Contacted MSI the first time my laptop rebooted while playing games, they "didnt know anything" (they lied) and ask me to RMA
    - After RMA, msi told me only that "vbios from factory was installed" - so im still in darkness, i dont know what is going on
    - After a few days, im surprised to see that games are running worse, then i check the GPU and is limited to 1443mhz
    - Contacted MSI again, and they tell me "We arent the ones to blame, Nvidia bla bla bla bla" and "Wait for a new official vbios that will fix everything"
    - Of course, im tired of this situation, i spent 1878 euros - the best laptop of my life and im having issues with it ! - told my family and friends about this and they said "my 500 euros laptop runs games without crashing"
    - The last few weeks, i been using this forum and official msi forum to talk to other users and find out what the HELL is going on
    - The only conclusion i reached: Some 2016 laptops come with defective 1070 GTX, all 2017 laptops no problems at all, new 1070 GTX revision
    - Told this to MSI, "Install official 8A vbios and overclock to reach boost clocks" (lied again, 8A is from chinese forum)
    - Why should i wait for that new official vbios, since what is going to do, is to limit GPU power like 8A vbios? The problem inside the 1070 GTX, its not the VBIOS or Software
    - I dont want to OC/DC/UV the laptop, i want to use it normally and let the GPU boost like it was meant to be, like i used my previous MSI laptop.

    Im furious mate, furious.

They will not help you at all,

I told you many times you had a 1070 defective, but as you can see everyone says "Oh, its not the gpu" or "Oh, install 8A vbios and all your problems will be resolved".

    They dont care mate.

Your laptop didnt crash because you used G-Sync, G-Sync limits the framerate on 3D Mark - the problem dissapears - you need to test it without G-Sync and V-Sync off.

Run Ice Storm normal , no extreme !

    Ice Storm(INSTALLED 1.2)
    For basic smartphones and tablets

Also, 3DM-ICF-2DHYQ-CD475-T324L-6N6UF, unlock your 3D Mark to full version

    P.S

You need to play games are confirmed to crash, install Bullestorm, Ghost Recon Wildlands, and some low-stress level games (games that you get 200 fps or more)

If you bought your laptop less then a month ago, you can return it and ask for money.

I only detected this issue with my laptop after more then one month, i was not lucky

Yep i see where you're coming from, they get something ****ty from a big company that doesnt care (as we can see in your case) and was fixed but still ****ty, still they are fine with it. which is wrong, I know but maybe just maybe that's what they want to believe in, a behavioral mechanism of sorts.

So going back, I tried turning Gsync off and now Vsync off( I think you did not mention this last time, dunno) then run ice storm 1.2, dude it didn't crash anymore, it finished the run. heres the screen shot the score was 59,196. 59196.png

P.S. I checked my power settings it was on high performance, ill try switching it to balanced then will run again. see what happens.

Well this problem is bit random, you can run the same game or Ice Storm, for hours, and no crash, and the next day you get a crash in 5 minutes.

For you to test you need to do this:

    - Use High Performance in Windows
    - Use the lastest Nvidia/Windows/Bios/Firmware
    - Use default Bios settings
    - Use default gpu/cpu clocks
    - Use default Nvidia settings
    - Turn off G-Sync and V-Sync, end all processes running on background that are not in need
    - Use original vbios from MSI: 3A, 0D, 14, 44
    - Use always your laptop connected to eletricity

    Games:

Demanding games like Rise of TR, Crysis, Dishonored 2, runs fine usually, so you need to play low-stress games that you can play at 200fps or more at maximum settings.

Inside, Wolfenstein New Order, Project Cars, Bullestorm, Outlast 1, (unreal engine 3 games), The Last Remnant, Ghost Recon Wildlands.

You need to play more then two hours to be sure, play two hours straight.

I have been trying to research this as well. This is my understanding of it. version 1.0 needs a Vbios update to stabilize the card at 1443mhz. it is a Chinese bios MSI didn't even come up with it but it works. there will be no boosting past 1443 or it will crash. all the newer 73's and maybe some 72 vr's have version 1.2 that seems to be conflict free. MSI obviously new this. Any one who purchased there laptops new with this version 1.0 should demand a refund or a new GPU version 1.2 that simple. for someone like myself I am screwed because I was going to upgrade myself because MSI screwed me on the upgrade option and I purchased one of those 1.0 versions. MSI screwed everybody. Whats even crazier is other people are selling these cards Eurcom for one. they were asking over $900 for one now they realized the cards have bugs and have reduced to like $800 or something. its a big deal. I would really be surprised if MSI comes up with bios that will fix it. Why would they have made a new version 1.2 if all they need to do was provide a bios fix?

    Actually no, you're wrong.
The card is perfectly stable at 1443 mhz to 1643 mhz. The problem is the auto overclocking PAST the boost clocks.

The newer cards will throttle the FPS and signal "Voltage reliability" when auto overclocking too far. The 8A Bios simply disables the auto overclock past the boost clocks (so no more 2000 mhz clocks on low load screens with +200 mhz offset).

    You can still manually overclock.

I have the Rev 1.0 in my Eurocom Tornado F5 (GT62s beefier and more handsome big brother) and it works great. I don't have these issues you guys are describing on any vBIOS version. I have tested 3 different vBIOS and all are stable and can be overclocked. I personally liked the 8A version that I got off the forums because when manually overclocking the clock speeds hit the same value but seemed to be more stable at a lower temp.

I will admit I am not qualified to be technical on this matter I was just sharing what I have learned in the past couple of days. It seems these companies have been a bit untruthful with most of their customers. I think if we all communicate together we can get some of these issues resolved. Again I'm not claiming to know anything I'm retarded on such matters but am learning.
