For those that have upgraded their MSI notebooks to a 7970m gpu, I was wondering what kind of temps and overclocking results did you experience. Seeing as how most of those that upgraded are replacing a gpu other than a 580m, the 7970m would have significantly more power consumption.

Did you have to undervolt / underclock to get it stable and not throttle? Please include your laptop model and the power brick wattage. Thank you.

My card is a bad overclocker, i was never able to go past 950/1250 stable.
However, it never throttled and never went above 90 degrees, even overclocked, even while i only have like 25% heatsink to core contact, the rest being almost 1mm of TIM to fill the gap.
    I use a heavily OC'd 920xm cpu (24/24/24/24).
150W brick, although I'll upgrade to the 240W delta. 180w targus or delta are good too.

I'd overclock my cpu more, but the cooling can't handle it long-term.

I don't know about power consumption, but for heat, it's colder than my GTX-460m.

My 7970m runs at about 78C clocked at 900/1300 stock volts (1.05v) Thats either gaming or furmark.
This is while my 920xm is overclocked too, and running up to 98C.
    180w PSU.
Although toastie, its quite stable, and can game like this for hours :)

I have my 7970m running at 925/1375 and stock volts (1.05) with Catalyst 13.2 beta 3. My max temps are 60degC under load (using CM Storm laptop cooler at max fan speed). I can push an absolute max OC of 965/1465 and my max temps go up to 68degC - but at these settings, certain games tend to crash after a few hours or so (in particular Sleeping Dogs and Crysis 2). I keep my Core i7-3610 CPU at stock, as there is no real need to OC the CPU.

Did you guys try increasing the stock voltage?

You can increase voltage to about 1.1 - 1.5V (I don't think it would be wise to go above that). I did OC to 1.5V and managed to get clock speeds of 1050Mhz core and 1580Mhz memory, but that was really pushing it. You get some weird artifacts in certain games as well. I really wouldn't recommend voltage tweaks though - to me it's safer getting a reasonable overclock (8-20% of default clock speeds) rather than bumping up the voltage just to get that further OC which might potentially damage your GPU.

Edit: Oops, sorry guys I'm talking nonsense - I meant 1.15V max not 1.5V

My stock voltage is 1v and I went as high as 1.075 for max clocks available in CCC - 7.5k 3dm11 but I can't game bf3 at those clocks.

What are you guys using to overclock? MSI Afterburner?

    Got a problem with my 7970m :\
Changed my thermal pads to phobya ultra 5w/mK from the stock ones.
Put everything in place again taking great care not to damage nothing..
Boom it does not boot. I get a white flash screen and then the power button starts flashing every 5-6 seconds. I can even hear the fan trying to spin-up but to no avail. I put back the gtx570m and everything is fine.
    Don't know what to do..
Maybe upgrading the bios would help.
    I have a GT780DX never modded, stock settings. :(

Yeah, using MSI Afterburner to OC.

@felix, are you sure you haven't damaged the card in any way? They are very fragile due to size. Check the card properly before inserting it back into the slot. If the card is fine, then you can try the BIOS - best bet is to flash the BIOS from another 7970m or update BIOS version. I sincerely hope that the card is not damaged.

No damage done to the card as I've taken really great care in putting everything into place. I updated the notebook bios to the latest msi one. Removed the heatsink to see if it shorts anything (doubt it as it's a 7970m from gx60, got it from majster msi) Now after some spin-up retries the notebook starts but it shows a black screen. I then turn it off so not to burn the gpu core. Which vbios version do you reccomend? Will try a blind-flash if it works.. I get the feeling that in this state the notebook looks like a car trying to start. After some tries the engine starts.. :(

Maybe the vbios still has enduro on. Do you think the system boots to windows? If so, its likely the enduro setting. You will need to find a vbios with enduro off. Try getting one of the same manufacturer as the mxm card.

Unfortunately I can't boot to windows. It posts on it's second try..It's a Dell card so it should have enduro checking disabled.. anyway I'm in touch with paulow to see if we can get it up and running.

@januszzbych: Mate, that 3dmark composite score is seriously bad. Are you overclocking? Or maybe your CPU is getting throttled? You should hit up at least 5.5k on it. Maybe you need a better PSU but I think your machine is performing nowhere near where it should be.

Got my 7970m Clevo card :)
It's working fine, but as I posted even in the official thread of GT780/GT783, the fan doesn't get activated by the GPU temp..
Anyone of you has this "issue"? Any "solution"?
I know Pherein's tool lets you control fan profiles by modding EC profiles but I liked a native way of cooling this beast.
Anyway turbo-fan on I get 71 deg max and 36 deg at idle. Used PK-3 thermal paste and Phobya 5W/mK pads.
Original MSI 7970m heatsink modded for the Clevo card ;)

    Cheers
    felix
