Hi All,
Does anyone know if it is possible to add ram to my GT70 without taking apart the cpu/gpu heat sink? Is there enough room to squeeze it in?
Thanks

No, but heat sink removal and install is simple. The design makes it too difficult to "squeeze" memory in while the heat sink is applied.

The heatpipe blocks the corner of RAM, so it cannot be installed without taking the entire heatsink assembly out.
But as Prostar mentioned, it's easy to remove the whole thing which is 7 screws then you can install the new RAM.
Be sure to use DDR3L 1.35V 1600MHz SoDIMM module for the system. -
The problem with removing the heatpipes is that he would inevitable end up having to repaste, no?

If you are careful with the CPU heatsink part no, the GPU I would not risk bending the connector heatpipe just to try and skip a repaste.
-
Yeah... i mean if I am going to open up to add more ram, I think I might as well do a new good repaste
Now that I remember, I need to try the paste instead of pad for the GPU/CPU bridge. -
I was able to slide 1 8GB module under the heat pipes so I now have 20GB. I have no interest in re-paste or taking apart the keyboard etc to get at the 4GB module installed from the factory.

@panzer06
Yes if you're careful enough you can fit and install the lower RAM module (got to have small hands though
)
@Xanius
You must also be careful not to damage any SMD components on the GPU board doing so. There are some disassembly videos for the 2OD/2PC models on youtube. I'm on tapatalk right now so can't post them for you. You need to search yourself

Let us know how it affects temps changing that thermal pad with paste. I'm curious too

Not totally necessarily, the impact is minor since the paste itself reflows under heat.
It won't be as fine as the initial application, and it won't be as bad as without it completely. -
I did not find installing in that slot too difficult. I can't palm a basketball but I can throw a tight spiral with a football. No Burger King Commercial tiny hands here!
Cheers, -
Thank you all for the responses. I will likely leave it for now since I am rarely using more than 6gb of memory anyways. I think my first upgrade will be adding two more 128gb msata ssd's.

Aye, SSD is more practical than memory upgrade for sure.
