Just got my x460dx. From my initial testing throttling from heat isn't a big issue. The thing is cooled by a fairly beefy 3 heatpipe setup. I fired up WoW for about 15 mins and got steady frame rates.
Everything else is great except the screen. I've got an annoying dead pixel on the left side of the screen that won't go away. Besides that the lcd itself doesn't look too good. The horizontal viewing angles are alright, but the vertical is pretty narrow.
-
-
That's awesome. Is their anyway you could set your settings to the highest in wow, and play it for ~40+ mins and make sure there is still no throttling?
Thank you so much much for giving us this news btw. A lot of people have been waiting for that. -
Alright have a look at this screenshot.
Here I have WoW(high settings + 4xAA) + Some Stone Giant techdemo that shipped with the laptop running for over a half hour. Temperatures are very good and holding pretty steady. Turbo boost still manages to keep the CPU at 2.6ghz and the GPU isn't throttling. -
You just allowed me to purchase this laptop tonight.
Thank you so much! -

Review from TechSpot
MSI X-Slim X460 Ultraportable Review - TechSpot Reviews -
-
The review was fairly positive, but I've not read any reviews from TechSpot before, so I don't know if this is common. It would be nice if more places did empirical tests on the screen like NotebookCheck. Waiting to see if we can upgrade the DX to Quad core, which would be wonderful
-
Just ordered mine on newegg!!
Can't wait to get it -
Hey guys, new member here. Just ordered my X460DX-006US from Newegg! Should get mine next tues or wed. I definitely will be doing an unboxing and review!
-
they said that the version without an ODD have room for a SDD. Does that mean that we can remove the dvd drive, for those who have one, and put a SDD?
-
prepseb: If you check out XoticPC, they sell the 'caddy' (empty ODD shell that you can put a HDD or SDD into, or just use to save weight). I think it was about US$45. However, earlier in this thread, someone pointed out that you don't get SATA3/6GB connectivity from the ODD PCI slot, so it might not be worth running out and buying a Vertex 3 or something.
-
Also - I just want to thank all the really generous folks that shared their early feedback on this box. It was crucial to me too. I've been following this thread *so*closely for days.
Every concern of mine has been addressed except for one: while it is certainly nice to have a screen that isn't too finicky in terms of horizontal & vertical viewing, and overall brightness (and very few hot or dead pixels), I will be doing image editing and CAD-style work on this, and so have some different prioririties:
I need a display that is capable of showing a good range of colours and tones fairly accurately. The manufacturer said most of this batch all should be Samsung displays, which I thought would be better than AU Optronic, but I have read contradictory assessments: some early reviewers said the display was capable of really good colour and range, whereas others here said it is the laptop's single biggest downfall. Maybe there's a difference between European-assembled screens and North American assembled screens. It seems the people in Europe are raving about the quality, and the people in North America are really saddened by it. Are these opinions from different components, or just how the display meets different applications?
ANY additional feedback is hugely appreciated!
Thanks!!! -
so basically, should I install SSD inside the laptop replacing the 500gb hdd and put the 500gb hdd on the odd?
I am very confused -
-
Hook3549: That's how I would address that constraint. However, what I don't know is how much that will practically limit you. It might be like coming from a Yugo, and getting upset about only going as fast as a Lotus, when you really wanted to go as fast as a Formula One car. Maybe the Lotus isn't so bad.
Plus, I still have reservations about using an SSD for the primary OS disk (especially Windows, with its gajillion temp files and unbuffered log writes) on an SSD drive. Personally, I would purchase more RAM and redirect most of my tempfiles to a portion of that space as a ramdisk, and allocate the physical HDD as the only swapfile to extend the life of an SSD drive. However, others that know more about SSD could certainly add more value there. HTH. -
Any idea as to newegg's dead/hot pixel policy? I'm not sure how many days I have to wait for their presales email response, but I'll bet I can get an answer here quicker. Newegg has yet to even send an autoresponse yet. It's not easily findable from their FAQs or service/support pages.
By the time I get an answer from them, this model will have gone out-of-stock for the third time!
If they defer to the manufacturer's policy, MSI's was surprisingly not up to date: something like *5* dead and/or hot pixels for a 14" display, and 7 for a 15" display. That would be unbearable. -
-
I posted my question there yesterday, whereas you were able to help in an hour!
Hopefully the screen is adjustable to deliver half-decent image quality. Often, Notebookcheck.net even posts an ICC profile for their reviews, and the posts on that East European site referenced earlier in this thread appear to be in the same format they use for their reviews. Fingers crossed, ordering... -
mine just shipped today! =D
Hopefully this laptop will last me a long time...My previous laptop was a 2011 HP Dv6t quad and it lasted for 35 days before dying.lol -
-
Also on an extremely lame note, MSI still puts Warranty Void stickers on top of screws on the bottom of the laptop(Hello 10 years ago). I wasn't too worried about breaking it though. From what I understand those stickers don't mean much legally and finding an exact replica of it online is pretty easy.

When you installed crucial m4 ssd, did you have to buy a adapter for it
or does m4 fit without any adapter? -
EXcaliberPC Company Representative
Please take a look this review from Tech Spot.
Hope this helps! -
Actually, I found it a rather unimpressive review as far as hardware is concerned... MSI was really touting it's speaker solution, and with competition like the Lenovo Y470 with "excellent" speakers, I think this would be important. Also, they don't say hardly anything about the screen - also a very important selling point in this price range because competition is lacking so severely here. Unfortunately, reviews featuring more details in these two areas are usually long delayed - NotebookCheck seems to be the only ones to actually do empirical testing.
-
Can someone tell me, who bought x460dx, about the temperatures? How hot is bottom when you guys playing some games etc.? It is possible using laptop on your lap ?

Regarding the techspot X460 (not X460DX) review
I pray the X460DX screen isn't lame. I was told by MSI that this batch should be using Samsung displays, but I notice that Samsung has come out with a few crappy displays lately, so I hope this one is alright. Multiple posts of dead pixels, but generally positive screen reviews in Europe, and middling screen reviews here, it seems, but all anecdotal at this point. Can't wait for the Noetbookcheck.net review to grab the ICC profile and see if their findings match mine (whenever my box arrives). -
I guess the union limits them to less than an hour's drive per day.
So by the time I get it, printed publications will probably long have reviews. Sorry to anyone urgently waiting on details about the display quality. -

On top of that, even with the CAD$ above par with the USD$, they still charge a 20% premium on the warranties at the NewEgg.ca site versus those at the NewEgg.com site. Did some actuarial guy somewhere just presume Canadians are more likely to accidentally drop objects than elsewhere? (please - no comments to that!!!) Or is that just another cash grab?
Now to add to the mix, the decent Canadian reseller community is not allowed to purchase this model in Canada from MSI: they have to buy an "X460DX-00 7US", which has only 4GB ram and a 5400 RPM HDD and lacks Bluetooth and WiDi: it is $50 cheaper though. Which would you pick? And so Canadians have to go to either Amazon or NewEgg. Maybe MSI assumes that since NewEgg tells them Canadians drop everything they touch, we'll do less harm to a HDD spinning only at 5400 RPM?
If I get soaked for duty after all this, I will be right cheesed off.
So anyone from Canada should see if they can order from NewEgg.com (save 20% on warranty) and put the savings into premium shipping if you want to see the product before the battery reaches its end of life. I would also have gladly ordered from a helpful enthusiast vendor like the two that post here (XoticPC and EXcaliberPC), but they didn't have any support for out of country customers. -

I'm surfing on an EDGE network. My internet is really slow. I just placed an order for a MSI X460DX-006US. It is on order, but JR.com has a $75 instant rebate on this model. I thought if someone wanted this laptop and don't mind waiting a week or two, then they can order there at the lowest price that I could find for that model. There is also a free shipping code for JR.com till 8/30.
JR.com: MSI Microstar X-Slim Series X460DX-006US 14" Notebook PC in PC Notebook Computers
I hope they still charge my card for the price I placed the order at, because they don't charge your card until shipped. That's what they say -
pico is there tax?
-
I live in Florida so there is no tax for me. I believe JR is located in NY so there will be tax in NY. You can see if you have to pay tax or not by clicking the Total Delivered Price above the Add to Cart button and fill in your zip code then press enter. It will show the shipping price and tax (if applicable). You can get free shipping with promo code: TECHEXPO11

If anyone has a confirmed ODD caddy please link it. One that they have put in and fits and works, etc.
One of the highpoints of this laptop is usb3, over my acer 4820tg (a great laptop other than no usb3 or bluetooth). I plan on using an external usb3 drive to load a terabyte of steam games on.
As to screen quality, i like mine. Looking for how to find out manufacturer now. Does anyone know how? -
device manager..
monitor - generic
details then hardware ID -
Well, I just received my x460dx today. So far so good, the keyboard has no flex and the palm rest is pretty comfortable. I ran Aida64 for a stress test and the temps peaked at around 72 C.
Not really sure how to benchmark this thing but I have all day, so if anyone wants to tell me what to do I'll do my best. -
Download 3dmark 11
and post results
|MG| 3DMark 11 Build 1.0.2 Download
Also monitor the cpu for any throttling. -
I was reading through the notebookcheck forum post that D3vo posted back on page 8 and the person noticed throttling during gaming? But I think he states it's not that noticable, at least in Dirt 2, so seems like it's not as big of an issue as with the Acer Timelinex series.
Can anyone who has the laptop confirm/elaborate on this? Google translate isn't 100% reliable
And I see the temperature post about running WoW on high settings for half an hour but I don't know how demanding WoW is so I couldn't judge from that
And one last thing I'm wondering about is the battery life! So far I'm reading that it lasts about 4-5 hours, is this from regular use like web surfing and word documents?
EDIT: Here's the link to the forum post http://www.nhl.pl/index.php?showtopic=47273
It's on page 4 -
just received a x460dx from newegg. i like the design and everything but
the notebook came in with a cd drive. i thought it comes with empty odd but cd drive is included. Planning to install a ssd and a hard drive in the odd but have no clue how to do it. any comment would be nice -
Ok. I ran 3DMark11 and got:
P1067 3DMarks
All I've done since getting this was to remove the bloatware and update the graphics driver.
I had Aida64 on and it didn't show throttling (I have the extreme edition if it matters). -
Thanks.
I would love for someone to do a complete review if you wanted too -
I'll see about doing a review. But first I have to play around with thing. Gonna see how well it runs Deus Ex HR. I'm gonna double check to see if there's throttling as well.
-
Thanks LinS123!
Promising info...
Mine's coming from NewEgg (some day - it was ordered last week). Any comments on the display? (washed out, way too dark, nice or dull colours, etc.). MSI told me it should very likely be a Samsung, and shouldn't be 'bad' for this model, so I hope that's "good". :|
I can't wait! Enjoy your new baby! -
Well, the monitor is glossy. But it seems to be perfectly fine to me. I tried to check the monitor from the instruction given in a previous post but it didn't give me a manufacturer. Unless I did something wrong.
At max brightness the monitor is pretty clear, I was using it earlier with my back to a window and I saw my on reflection. I upped the brightness and it went away. It's pretty bright when maxed out.
If there is a sure fire way to check the display manufacturer, just leave some instructions and I'll try to check. -
My take on the battery life was that it was pretty impressive: something like 11 hours (plus or minus 40 minutes) for the late-night 'Reading' test (no WiFi, dimmed screen, Intel GPU), so that might equate to your word processor test. Then for the 'web' test, a page was refreshed every 30 seconds or so while WiFi was running, and display was set to something like 75% brightness, Intel GPU running. It got between 7.5 and 8 hours life, depending on how dynamic the pages selected were (and probably the amount of WiFi energy needed for the connection), so that answers your second question. I still don't really understand the 'full-on' GT540 3D session with audio and full brightness and heavy CPU/GPU activity, so can't even give you a clue there.
All of this depends on how well I interpreted that forum's posts, not to mention how accurate the forum itself was, but considering the site URL (notebookcheck.pl) and the structure of the temperature reports and the settings used for the battery life tests, it definitely looks like this will be the report for Notebookcheck.net, which I give a fair bit of credibility to. The reviewer (I think) said he preferred it to the Vostro 3450 and the 3830TG/4830TG and the Y470 (not positive about that last one), although he reminded all that the 4830TG and Y470 are in a different category, and he did still give props to the Y470. -
Without ripping off the bezel (never want to do that to such a new thing!), I can't help there - I don't know any other way either.
If you want and have time, you can go to 'Control Panel'...'Display'...'Calibrate Colour' and just do the Contrast and Brightness settings. See if you could easily see punchy white whites and deep dark blacks, while not losing the ability to discern details (wrinkles, buttons) in the very lightest and darkest parts of the images. It still gives you a chance to compare your new settings against the previous settings, so you can choose your favourite.
I just checked my Dell at work, and it says "LGD0000", so I'm presuming that means it is an 'LG' screen? This screen is a full HD with matte finish. What does yours say?
Thanks again!
Any news on the x460?
