Hi guys,
This is my first time in the forum![]()
Here is the case: I recently bought MSI Un-badged MS-16F2-ID1 on Ebay.com.au ( eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d?r) which it does not appear the CPU type (system appears "Genuine Intel (R) 0 @ 2.0ghz" . I am a bit worried that the laptop is not made by MSI which could be fraudulen hardware but everything seems fine, it comes with Genuine Windows 7 Home and drivers dics. The guy who sold it, told me that he had it from the States. Anyone has any experiences out of it ?
Thanks for reading my post

It looks like an i7-2630qm ES ! You shouldnt get too worried though depending on how much you bought it and how it does perform !

There is no way it could be a "fake" MSI laptop.
MSI releases their laptop in barebones form which sometimes don't have any branding.
Check all the specs, make sure the 560m is 192 bit with GPUz, and the CPU a 2630qm with CPUz.
Man, even if even only those 2 things are correct, you got this for an AWESOME price! Seriously, there are no fake laptops, unless you count all the normal brands like Dell and HP and Acer which are manufactured by Compal and wistron without anyone's knowledge

If he is using a "ES" cpu the bios may not be able to identify the CPU, or an older bios where the microcode is not up to date. This is common with "ES" & "QS" cpu's. The bios will just identify with generic & basic cpu info.

Shame on me...

No, no shame.
MSI gx640 has gone for just 400$ barebones with 5850.
True cost is determined by 1 thing... circumstance.
When you find anything widely available at half the cost others are paying in high demand, you realize its all just ridiculous and instead of buying things because you want them everyone should be reselling anything they know a thing or two about. And not at auction with no reserve I might add.
Ignorance causes a lot of stuff to go for very very cheap. Usually its not what you happen to need at the given time.
BTW, you know how to set your signature right in user CP right? Its probably easier than copying it. -

it was $.99 NR auction, the guy asked for $1450 Buy Now but I decided to bid and WON. I was thinking to get Asus G74 or Alien m14x but it costs more than I can afford with same specs like this.

I have posted GPU and CPU in attachment

Yep, you got an ES. I own an ES too (2920XM), there's almost nothing to worry about for you.
Only the seller should be worried, what he did is 100% illegal, but it happens all the time, it's just never enforced -- Look at ebay's ES stock. . . -

ES (Engineering Samples) are technically Intel's property. They are "testing" chips NOT sold retail. They are loaned to huge OEM's like Asus/Gigabyte/MSi to test in their motherboards/chipsets. Once a processor goes retail, ES/QS (Qualification Sample - Pre Release) chips have no value in the market and still are the property of Intel.
Of course, the reason question is, what happens to these chips once retail one's are released? Well, check ebay. you can get ES chips at almost 33% of the retail price of the chip (such as my 2920XM for $300 compared to $1,000 retail). The only real big difference about these chips is, that the retail ones have all the "bugs" ironed out of them. If you look at your stepping it is D0, just like mine. It is one of the earlier version, I believe D2 is the retail stepping. So overtime, Intel has discovered bugs in these ES/QS chips and has changed them before retail launch. In my experiences so far, I have yet to encounter one of these "bugs/errata", so I've been happy with my purchase.
You system came with an ES chip for a possible multitude of reasons. The main reason I see is that the seller is shady and wants to save money by putting ES chips in his/her laptops because its MUCH cheaper. This is not an acceptable practice in the computer industry BUT, we are talking about Ebay.
I attached a pic of mine for confirmation. -
how would I encounter the bugs as you said ?
-
BSOD's, hangups, etc "showstoppers". You would know if you came across one. I have yet to see anyone say that they've encountered any, I haven't that's for sure. For the price though, I say it's worth it. $900!

i just installed a 2920XM ES for the 3rd day now and there is yet to be any issue with it.

is it compatible with MSI drivers for GT683R through their online website download ? my webcam is not working with Yahoo messenger, I'd like to try the new driver on MSI website but cannot find where it is located
-
the webcam? try press FN + F6
-
-
thats weird, were you using the webcam on something else at the time? I just tried it with the video and voice setup in yahoo and it works fine.
Which version of yahoo are you using? -
YM v.11.0.0 , it actually worked the first time I started to try Video call on YM but since then, it always crashes everytime I turn on Webcam on YM
-
Is the webcam button pushed down? The one to the right of the power button.
-
installed YM v.10 but it does not work on it, WC button is ON, is it possible to have latest driver ? it may fix the problem
-
AFAIK, there is no driver for the webcam. Once the button is pushed the generic windows driver is installed and it just works.
Does this happen with any other programs? -
, this is so annoying !!
Anyone experienced with MSI Un-badged MS-16F2-ID1 (similar to MSI GT683R) ?!?
