Now that I have other issues contained, I wanted to upgrade to the CCC 10.4 mobility drivers. They install fine until the reboot when after a while the system just drifts off, the desktop never shows and the fan stays running. Only way out is to hold the power key down 4+ seconds.

I know some are using 10.4 and enjoying them..

Do you know what your PowerPlay is set to? I've had this happen with it set to "Maximum Battery Life" and I was forced to use System Restore.
It's best to turn PowerPlay off with the Mobility HD 5850, because it downclocks to 100/1000 - at those clocks it can't wake up from sleep or boot properly.

To be honest I'm not really sure what it is set to, whatever the install default would be then it asks you to reboot of course. Now the ones from the MSI site have it enabled and everything works ok. I understand those are usually a few revisions behind - I have no idea how far.

I did run a 3dmark vantage at standard settings and I don't like what I saw.. 58xx That's no better than a gts360m and this is supposed to be so much better.

The power profile was set to high performance so I have no idea on that either.

Hmm, well, High Performance shouldn't have stopped it from booting, but I still recommend turning PowerPlay off altogether.

As for the Vantage score, I think the 360M actually only gets a stock GPU score of around 4.5k or so. The 5850, on the other hand, gets around 7k stock GPU score (a number of people with the GX640 have gotten those kinds of scores), so I can assure you that the difference is quite large indeed. The reason you got 5800 was most likely because of the PCIe x1 issue mentioned in another thread; this is fixed by the newer drivers.

ok thanks for the information. The 360 I was playing with got 5500 with the latest verde notebook drivers, and I'm going to try to put those 10.4 back on today again. I had to go in and do a 'last known good' boot to get in to remove them as I couldn't do it in safe mode.

I'll check back later today after I try the 10.4's.

Yup 71xx on the standard settings, that's more like it :D

    Disabled powerplay before rebooting.

Did a little temp testing with furmark 1.8.2 hot as hell version - 10 minutes yielded a max of 99c. Prime95 for 30 minutes brought about 78c on the cpu.

Is that 5.5k GPU score, or total score? The total is brought up a quite a lot by the CPU score for Nvidia GPUs because of the CPU score being done with PhysX.
Quite glad to hear that turning PowerPlay off is working for you as well, though.

Can anyone confirm (and translate) if those temps are good for gaming? What temperatures should I be looking for while idle/surfing net/youtube/gaming on maximum settings? (These will be done on stock configurations, with powerplay turned off, all drivers updated to most recent hopefully).

Thanks for the help and patience with my lack-of-pc-knowledge

Considering we have so many GX640 threads, try to focus discussion in the appropriate areas. Temps should go in the temps thread now.

I had nothing but trouble with the 10.4's, 10.4a's. Eventually causing me to do a Acronis restore that had the 10.3's. I did notice while running the 10.4's, that it seemed to run very hot, It was a noticeable, cooler heat change with the 10.3's. (PowerPlay DISabled) I think the 10.3's are stable, do not crash, and I'm sticking with them at least till 10.5's. IMHO- the 10.4's suck big time. Just say no to the 10.4's,and move along.

I just dont know, but GX640 owners seem to have a addiction to start new threads and also have some kind of repulsiveness from our traditional -->*OFFICIAL: MSI GX640 Owner's Lounge*<--

    I dont know why

I think its based on attention and visits.

    Example:

Ranting against comunism in your backyard vs. Ranting against comunism at a comunist government house.

which one is most likely to yield you any kind of answer?
    :p

Yeah, it's pretty amazing how many GX640 threads there are; probably something like twenty all around the place.
